I've recently been getting into some of the instrumental rock that's out there. People like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (the former was a teacher of the latter). This is really good music. It takes the traditional riffs and techniques that you hear in the electric guitar solos in songs and spins them out into 5 or 6 minute instrumentals with a virtuosity that I'd normally associate with classical guitar.
I'll add videos from home tonight, but are there other fans of this kind of music on WC? Other suggestions to listen to?

There was this one song I remember, maybe it was Stevie Ray Vaughan...

I think this is the one I remember. I also like a bit of Santana. Does Voodoo CHild by Colin James fit the category?

Joe Satriani:
"If I Could Fly" is the song that Coldplay is alleged to have ripped-off for the song Viva La Vida. I can see the resemblance, but not sure it's as blatant a rip-off as some make it out to be. At least they chose to rip-off the best.

Oo. Stevie Ray. A little bluesier than some of the others (though Satriani flirts with the blues at times) but fits for sure. Didn't do much instrumental, though. Here he is backing Jennifer Warnes on her cover of Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan". Stevie's the main reason I prefer her version to Cohen's.

Yeah, that was a good Cohen cover. It got a lot of airplay. I thought of it a lot when I went to Berlin.

I'm not, but Van Halen's not really what I had in mind. Eddie hasn't really done much instrumental work, mostly just solos as part of songs. He is a heck of a player though and I'd love to hear him stretch into instrumentals like those of Vai and Satriani someday.
Speaking of Van Halen, though, did you know that Sammy Hagar (ex-vocalist) and Michael Anthony (ex-bassist) are now in the band Chickenfoot with ... Joe Satriani. They released a debut album in 2009 and the second is due this fall with the first single already out on iTunes.
