Life of Pi -- Movie

Has anyone seen it?
Having read the book a few years ago, I was sceptical about how it would translate to film.
Friggin' AWESOME!
It's been with me since then, which is a hallmark of a really good movie. I found it very substantial food for thought (just like the book); but what of course was incredible was the sensory brilliance & the unbelievable (believable) effects.
When the cargo ship sinks, you might as well be on it. I think I was actually holding my breath!
Also just the ocean .....wow.
Like the book, the horrors are implied vs shown. Not too rugged that way at all I found.
I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation ninjafaery!  Busydaughter read the book last semester and I was contemplating taking her to see Life of Pi.  Now I will be sure to!

My mother, daughter, spouse, and myself went to see the movie last night.

It was astounding!

The movie held me spellbound the entire time.

This is by far the best movie I have seen in a long long time.

There was wonderful depth to the content and the ideas concerning spirituality were so well presented.

The cinematography was breathtaking.

I left there feeling I had indeed experienced something profound and worthwhile.   I gained a deeper appreciation of other religions and culture and I saw that we indeed share the same questions and yearnings.   I loved how as an innocent inquiring child that he gently explored other faiths.

I loved the line about since converting to Christianity (in this case catholicism) and still being a Hindu, that now he had hundreds of gods to feel guilty in front of!

His father, an athiest, made some wonderful points about reason and the mother responded so well about the heart.   Both were understanding of each other.

I appreciated the father's point that he would much rather have his son to reason out and believe one thing rather than just believe everything.    Lots to chew on there....

Such a great movie! ..... This one I will definately watch again .... and learn...

Regards

Rita

I agree Rita - that it was the legacy from both his parents that ultimately gave him a conceptual way to survive his ordeal. That first awful lesson about the tiger was pretty robust, as were the lessons in compassion to others and, very significantly, to self.
So rich in symbolism too. No wasted scenes either - like Rita said, "spellbinding".

Read the book a few years ago, really liked it's depth and am looking forward to seeing the movie.  Appreciate the positive comments.  Reviews have been great.

I'd like to see it, but after looking for it I can't find it playing anywhere. Do I have to rent it now?

I saw it when it first came out and absolutely loved it - the story was beautifully told and the cinematography was breathtaking. I think it should win the Oscar for Best Cinematography at least. Then there was the special effects - when that tiger jumped, I did too! Given the choice, I recommend seeing it in 3D - the film makers really used that to its' full effect in this movie. I'll definitely be seeing this movie again.

Hi Waterfall - Galaxy cinema is showing it in my area. DVD is out March13th, but since it is state of the art 3D, the cinema experience is fantastic, but it would still be impressive without.

Well that is TWO DVD's I need to buy now.  Life of Pi and The Hobbit.  I have read and reread Life of Pi. I don't have  a ' movie buddy' so I never made it to the theater. Same goes for lots of movies I have wanted to see on the big screen. (Skyfall was another).

Good to hear such praise - I've been thinking about going to see it.  The clips on the Oscars did look pretty amazing as far as visual effects were concerned.   I started the book a good many years ago, but had trouble getting into it & didn't finish, so I was a bit skeptical too about the movie, but I guess for different reasons.

Trishcuit - not having a movie buddy doesn't stop me. If I want to see a movie badly enough, I'll go - even if nobody wants to go with me.

Carolla - I can't recommend this movie enough. Like I said above, I highly recommend seeing it in 3D, if you can, because the special effects were phenomenal!

I think I'm going to be the only one to say I didn't really like it!

I suppose it didn't help that I actually felt seasick watching it, but I just didn't get the points that the movie was trying to make.  It felt, overall, very disturbing to me.  Of course, the cinematography is incredible, and the whole thing is very well done... I just didn't get the content or the depth.

I will confess that I haven't actually read the book, but I have been told I would enjoy it so many times that perhaps I have a deep-seated stubbornness about being told what I like!

Please, for those who have seen it, I would be very interested in hearing what kind of deep messages it carried for you.  Maybe upon re-examination I would appreciate it more.

I didn't like the book. The ending in particular. I like things wrapped up neat and tidy.

So not liking the book means no desire to see the movie.
