I am part of a group of friends at my church that put on a monthly "Movies that Matter" Night. We have the big screen technology in our church. It's part of a "Fun for Free" series of events and get togethers that are designed to be inclusive of anyone who wants to come, including the many lower income people who join us for our community meal. There is no religious content; the focus is fellowship and fun.
Anyway....we are having trouble finding movies that have a message - something to make you think, and discuss over (fair trade) coffee aftewards at our "Fair Trade Coffee House". Nothing religious, but a spiritual, or in some way, thought provoking movie, that is still entertaining, and under 2 hours long.
We'd prefer something out of the mainstream, altho' we have to be careful as our license covers most movie companies, but not all.
Does anybody have any movie recommendations for us?
Much appreciated!
Diana

"What the Bleep Do We Know?". Brilliant movie, my favourite. Thought-provoking? You bet. Changed my life. I'm sure others can vouch for the awesome-ness of this movie.
It dabbles in spirituality, quantum physics and philosophy; a lot of comedy thrown in, too. Brilliant film. I might go watch it again right now.
Hope this helps. : )

V for Vandetta
The Aviator
An Inconvenient Truth
the Aviator has a lot of "GODDAMNIT"ing, and a small instance of profanity, but the acting is phenominal. I watched it with my grandparents and thought it was great.
OH
and Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks is a really good movie. A lot of swearing and some blood, but nothing too harsh.

Uuuhhh, nevermind about Aviator. It's like three hours long.
BUT STILL
that flick made me respect Leonardo DeCaprio again. Definately worth watching.

Life of Brian.
Some find it offensive, but they're probably meant to. One of the best movies ever ABOUT religion, as opposed to a religious movie.

I guess not Borat? :-)
Oh well. Bowling for Columbine? War of the Worlds? An Inconvenient Truth?
And I'd be right in the front row for Life of Brian (which I got on DVD for Christmas).

Just saw Little Miss Sunshine. An excellent study in family relations. Jesus of Montreal is old but lots of content worth talking about. That's all that comes to mind now but I'm sure I have all kinds of meaningful movies stuck in my brain that won't come out.

I watched Thank You For Smoking a few weeks ago, and I found it entertaining. It's not(as I first suspected) an anti-smoking movie, but a movie about spin. Hmm. Who coulda known?

So you can actually buy LIfe of Brian in Nova Scotia, eh? I've looked and looked for it everywhere around Vancouver - nothing.
I've got The Holy Grail, which would be one of the things I would take with me if I was stranded on a desert island, but I"ve never been able to find LIfe of Brian. Brilliant, brilliant movie!
You know the sing along Sound of Music? We were pondering the possibility of a shout along Holy Grail. Think it might fly??
Thanks to you all - great suggestions!!

Diana my lovely,
I actually bought Life of Brian off of eBay. Get the Criterion Edition, it's the best.
My favorite version of Holy Grail is the one on the DVD where they replace the soundtrack with lines from Shakespeare's Henry IV. It actually works, briliantly!

e-Bay and Amazon, eh? D-oh! My low-tech roots are showing! Thanks!
Thanks again for all the suggestions.
We actually showed "What the Bleep do We Know" at a church service a while back - extremely cool movie. Those water crystals? Wow.
Our last "Movies that Matter" was An Inconvenient Truth. I found myself wondering what would have happened if Al Gore had been the president these past 8 years - what would our world be like then? Got me depressed - but I loved the movie; frightening, but hopeful.
And I never thought of sci-fi movies - fantastic! Thanks!
I've never heard of Boys Don't Cry. (I don't get out much). I'll look it up.
Thanks!

Diana, I love the idea of a shout-along Holy Grail, BTW. That would be hilarious!

Have you seen "Lord of War" with Nicholas Cage - a good one on Arms Dealing -
Also "Wag the Dog" with Dustin Hoffman
These may be a bit of a concern with language & blood, but damn they're good
Da Vinci Code - get people talking (but that is religious)
I'd agree with Inconvenient Truth & Supersize me, and a bunch of the others mentioned too

For all you movie buffs out there we just saw The Good Shepard over the Christmas holidays. We came out and looked at our watches and realized it was nearly three hours, and we were totally immersed throughtout the movie. It is about the beginning of the CIA, covert operations. It is an amazing look at how a "average" person who wants to support his country becomes an evil person. We were reminded of C.S. Lewis's discussion of the "inner ring".

2001: A Space Odyssey would allow for discussion of evolution, science & technology, futurism, and the philosophy of Nietzsche. Always a good choice.
Another choice could be Waking the Dead (starring Jennifer Connelly and Billy Crudup), which is a beautiful, romantic tear-jerker that provokes questions about the afterlife, morality, belief in God, and family life.
Finally, the HBO miniseries Angels in America (with Mary-Louse Parker) is stunning and certainly worthy of several sessions of discussion.

The best Canadian movie I think i've ever seen was Atanajuat: The Fast Runner.
It's brilliant, even though they softened up the ending for wusses.
Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth is one for a discussion group to watch.

How could I forget? "Inherit the Wind!"
Wonderful movie on the Scopes "Monkey" trial. Pretty distorted as to the facts of the trial, but great moviemaking, wonderful acting by Tracy and March, and a good source for conversation.
Also Stevie mentioned "To Kill a Mockingbird." I would heartily second that.
