Where people in India were burning pictures of the roomies accused of racism against their star. Why the heck these nuts more worried about a celebrity than poverty, and hunger? Am I the only one who thinks perhaps humanity's attention is being mis-directed?

Movies and movie stars have been diverting people's attention for many years. There is a reason for the term "movie idol".
Some big examples:
During the depression movies took people to a different place for a while.
Starting in WW1 and reaching a crescendo during WW2, movies diverted civilians' and soldiers' attention from the war. Movies were also used as a powerful propaganda tool; by both sides.
Starting with the Vietnam war, television joined movies as both a diversion and propaganda tool.
There have been suggestions and accusations that television, movies, and video games are used as tools to keep peoples' minds diverted away from the shenanigans being pulled by politicians.
I can see, although not agree with, people rioting over what they feel is mistreatment of one of their movie stars while she is a guest in another country.
