My favourite actor. Died of a heroin overdose at age 46. I would never have guessed, and I suppose I just never heard before that he had a drug problem. Shocking. Sad. Very sad for his partner and kids. My favourite roles he played we're Capote, of course, and Gust Avrakatos in Charlie Wilson's War, and Lancaster Dodd in The Master- and I have not really been keen on seeing the latest Hunger Games movie, but now I want to see it.
Favourite Philip Seymour Hoffman movies/ roles?

The demon of addiction...
I liked P.S.H in his film roles.
I loved him on stage.

He was extremely good at every role he ever played. He could play anyone and made it seem easy....but his characters were always off kilter, wounded people-always at least a little, and sometimes a lot, dark.
I also liked his role in The Savages, co-starrring with Laura Linney.

I also thought he was older than 46. So young! Tragic.

Yeah, that threw me, too. I thought he was older than me, but he was actually a couple years younger. I haven't seen many of his films and never saw him on stage, but it is always a sad loss when someone that talented in any field dies young. While I am generally rather cynical about the entertainment industry awards system, even I will concede that 4 Oscars noms with 1 win is good sign there's real fire there, not just smoke.

Warning: course language- but great acting...Gust Avrakatos in Charlie Wilson's War:
Capote: as Truman Capote, won Oscar
The Savages: as Jon Savage
Amazingly talented in this scene as Lancaster Dodd (based on L.Ron Hubbard)-Joaquinn Pheonix is also excellent- in The Master
Father Flynn in
Doubt
Lester Bangs in Almost Famous:
There are many more I had trouble picking but these few show his range.

I just think he could get into any character- and you knew it was him, but he transformed himself inside out to become someone else- whatever he was doing- yet, still him. And whenever he showed up on screen you just couldn't look away. Stunning, inexplicably. He was of the same calibre as Merle Streep, absolutely. Could've been a classic actor- he was. Better than Di Nero, Paccino, better than Jack Nicholson- he was more of the calibre of Gene Hackman because he had more range. He was a great actor. Still sad about his death. He leaves behind 3 young kids. In pictures I looked at yesterday, with his partner and kids, they looked like such a 'normal' family on outings. I would never have guessed he had an addiction to heroin. I wonder why he used it again after 23 years. What triggered it? I guess we can't know. R.I.P.
