The Shack and what you thought

I recently read the novel "The Shack" by W.M Paul Young and I just wanted to hear everyone's opinions on it and if you had any other suggestions for a good book?

Thanks

Hi Stanfast, I'll take your question seriousl enough to answer it...  I thought the book engaging but I was disappointed given the number of people that told me I *had* to read it.  There was so much hype attached to it - both the "it changed my life, you have to read it" as well as the "you'll burn in hell just by touching the cover." and all points in between.

By the time I did read it, I found that the writing itself wasn't great and I will admit to being a bit of a snob... I like reading the english language written well... and I found the story line pretty simplistic.

That being said, there were pieces of it - scenes or dialogue or phrases that have stuck with me and accompanied me since I've read it.  That doesn't happen with all books, even many books and so I take notice when something in me has responded to an idea, character, situation,  etc.

I think for anyone who is Christian or is interested, it's worth reading... even if to expand images for God or the trinity, the idea of justice or wisdom, revenge, making peace, family, relationships... there is a lot in there if you're looking to ponder...

I didn't like The Shack.  I though it used trite and cliched ideas as a rule and yes, was poorly written.  I was frustrated by the story line.  Why was God willing to take so much time and energy to address THIS man's suffering while so  many others languish?  For me it did a lousy job of exploring suffering and faith.

I did not like the Shack.  It was too make believe.   God had the time to address one man's pain and watch a little girl be murdered and had no time to intervene in the murder?

Stuff like that does not happen in real life where God whisks you away and spends time with you.

I didn't like it either and till now thought I was pretty alone in that thought.

I can see where people like it but I found it hard to get into because the writing was so poor.  I agree that I like to read a book that is well written.

I didn't like the story line either.  Not exactly sure why, I guess this story just didn't speak to me.

I too know people who love it, the whole "changed my life" talk but it left me cold.

I have no issue with a God who lets the world follow it's course, and i liked the characters of God.  I just didn't buy the story.  And I am not sure why the book gets all the hype it does.

I gave it a No Good vote.  I found it so poorly written that I had to force myself through it- if I hadn't done that I couldn't join in the conversation around it.  The author showed a very weak grasp of the English language.  He used worn out cliches, the story line was weak and the theology was simplistic.

I liked the pictures i could imagine while reading the shack. Also guys, remember that at the end all of this has happened while he was in a coma after his accident- and having God experienced myself in a dream, I can very well imagine that it could be a true story.

I see that you, Stan, are into socialwork. One book I really liked was: the Glass Castle- a true childhood story of someone who grew up in a dysfunctional family and poverty. Here the link to amazon:
