Six Feet Under - any theological reflection?

WARNING: THIS THREAD MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU'VE NOT SEEN THE SERIES.

I loved this series - I own all 5 seasons! [I know - kids are starving in Africa, and I'm spending 500 bucks on DVDs .... it's a sickness with this series, though.]

I think Alan Ball and his team are such brilliant writers. It's funny, and profound and a wonderful testimony to the human condition - life and death and relationships. The series finale was the most brilliantly written thing I've ever seen.

Ditto. It was the best series I have seen. However I don't think I want to be embalmed anymore. Nate's choice should be promoted.

I just love this series as well and own all five seasons. The series finale was amazing, and I've watched it several more times afterward. Which character's spiritual journey could you most closely relate to?

I really respect the potrayl of David- finally a gay television character who isnt only there to be laughed at, looked down upon, or idealized. His relationship with the church was also very realistic.

I think I can do this without spoiling much. Those who have seen it will get it.

It felt real but surreal. Figure out what you want out of life, take risks... life is short. That "death" comes in many ways, like being bored to death... Life is a journey, time if flying by. We are a bunch of stuff, us people are, and we can all be reduced to fears, tear and dreams.
Things felt pretty transcendental, very Buddhist. Life begins, ends, begins for someone new...The trip is unbelievably fast, from beginning to end. Live your life, love in your life and no fear.

I balled my eyes out on the last episode.

I am high strung like David and I really identified with his character... though I didn't take as many risks as he did. Even though he was all about his image (hmm okay, I'm not about my image), he was very loving and cared a lot for his family.

Whereas Nate sort of ruined himself in my eyes in the last season... even though I wish I was a free spirit like him :)

Claire is... well... I'm a young female so I've got a lot of Claire in me :)

wait, that wasn't much of a theological reflection on my part. Oops.

I have had a ambivalent relationship with Six Feet Under. At first I was intrigued by the funeral home thing because i wondered whether there would be some crossover between my experience as clergy and the experience of the funeral directors on the show. In real life we do share some similarities.

It was clear from the beginning however that Ball was interested in creating an alternative universe in which each character had just a little potential for redemption, but not enough to quite go all the way (as it were).

The clergy were typically shallow or hypocritical and the Fishers, et. al. bore no relationship to any funeral director I have ever known. The depiction of religion was generally ignorant and uninformed.

Sex was the lens throughwhich every relationship was regarded. Perhaps not too far off the mark for our culture, but are we really all that obsessed? I appreciated the frank approach to sex, quite unique to television, but i began to count how many couplings could actually fit into 50 minutes. I am still struggling through the series (almost through the fourth season) and seem to need to finish it for some reason. In spite of my skepticism I seem to care about what happens to Claire and David in particular. The others i tire of regularly.

Generally, I think the series should have been called Sex Feed Blunder. Ball seems unaware of the relationship between sex and death as Freud understood it. I find myself wishing that he would read a little more widely.
