Skypecasting

I've just been playing with my new webcam and the Skype program which lets me do video telephone calls. I've noticed on the Skype website that some American churches use Skype to broadcast live their worship service. Do you know anyone who has had any results doing this?
Does the idea of a church webcasting/skypecasting/podcasting its worship services &/or sermons appeal to anyone?

I personally wouldn't be into it. I don't think it could hold my attention like a real service would... but then again thats just me. :P

Hi, James...

We've been podcasting parts of our services since the beginning of advent... with evidence of 12 or so listeners each week. (We posted the entirity of both of our Christmas Eve services... but the download times on those are huge!) Some of the listeners I know are people in the congregation who couldn't make it to church that week, but wanted to listen to a bit of the service. They've dumped it onto their mp3 player and carried it with them.

Most of the people, I have no idea who they are, or what they're finding in it.

In some ways, what I'm trying to do is develop a congregational mindset that accepts the web as a tool that we can use to support what we're already doing, and to grow with it. I think podcasting is one of the easy ways to work on that.

I don't think I'd personally tune into a webcast but I could see it being of interest to those unable to make it to church or perhaps those stationed away, etc. It's free to do isn't it? and hey this is a new modern era why not just try it out and see if people tune in. Who would have thought so many people would be interested in joining a web site to discuss their spiritual views...

And while we're on the subject anyone out there with success video-chatting mac to pc. I'm just in the process of setting up Skype on my mac but the rest of my family is all pc. I'm hoping this will work but any advice?

Last year my church used Skype with webcams to have contact with a missionary family down in Bolivia during one of the services. It was really cool to see and hear from them personally for a few minutes to hear what was going on and affecting them at that time.

Belle...

I'm using skype on a linux system, and am having no problem communicating with windows skype users... though, since the linux version of skype is an earlier release, video is pretty much out.
