Too young - RIP Adam Yauch

So, last Friday as yours truly turned 47, Adam "MCA" Yauch of the influential rap/hip hop band The Beastie Boys passed away at the same age. I am not a huge fan of that style of music but, as always, there are exceptions. The Beasties are one of the rap groups that I could actually listen to at times. There was infectiousness and charm to their music that I find lacking in other rap, especially the gangsta rap. Less sexism and violent imagery, too. The fact that he and the band in general were political active and Buddhist set them apart from much of rap, too. Still, I'm not a big Beasties fan but I do find myself more affected by his passing than I normally would. Maybe it's age thing.

A couple of my favorite Beastie Boys vids (most of their videos were directed by Yauch, by the way, who was a movie director and producer under a pseudonym):

I'm liking teh Sabotage. ;  )  They sound more metal that rap maybe... Quite early 90's... reminds me of school.  I'm even reminded of Front 242.

It does tend to weird one out when someone one's own age dies, and doubly so on your birthday!

Actually, I like Intergalactic better, but both are good. And the videos from that period in their career are amazing. The whole "cheesy cop show opening" that they did for Sabotage make it one of my favorite videos.

I think the Beasties helped start that whole rock-rap crossover sound that we now hear in Linkin Park. Did it better than most of their successors, too.

Hmm, yes. I'm not really familiar with Linkin Park. I checked out one of their songs on Youtube a couple years ago, just to try and update my savy a bit.

Video is definately an art. I always appreciate a creative, well executed video.

Saboatage reminds me of Rage Against the Machine "Justify". I would get them mixed up.

I surprise myself. I liked Intergalactic. That was really good! I actually like some rap! Well, maybe if the Chilli Peppers rap, then it isn't the first, but for me this is very borderline as to my taste, but That was a really good sound and rhythm. I couldn't tell what they were saying, though I did make out "Mr Spock" at one point. Neeto.

I can see his death is a loss of great talent.

It has a sort of club sound to it... I am reminded of some of the early hardcore techno stuff,  20,000 Hardcore Members: Messiah and whatnot. Probly cause I don't know any rap, and this type of music has black origins and often has rap in it.

(note: hardcore wasn't my main thing. I was into trance.)

Oh and reminded of the KLF... What Time is Love, the album version.

Kimmio, do you mean this one? Testify?

Pretty punchy video. Scarey quote at the end, "If you're not turned on to politics, politics will turn on you." Eeeeee.
