Violent "Christian" video game?

Have any of you heard of this? A good friend of mine, who happens to be Jewish, sent it to me today. I'll admit I have not tried the video game so its unfair to have an opinion perhaps. Howeover, if this description, and many other reviews about it online (do a google search on "Left Behind") are true, then I have a serious problem with it. Sadly, it is this sort of behavior by the Christian right that makes me want to hide my own identity as a Christian, so as not to be confused with them.

Subject: Tell Wal-Mart: Stop selling religious violence for Christmas

Have you heard about this disgusting new development from the
religious right?

Wal-Mart is promoting the religious right's extreme ideology
this holiday season.

Just in time for Christmas, the religious right has released a
violent video game in which born-again Christians aim to convert
or kill those who don't adhere to their extreme ideology.
Disturbingly, the game's apparent attempts at religious
indoctrination are aimed at children and focus on violent,
divisive, and hateful scenarios. While the religious right
apparently has no problem pushing the product this holiday
season, America's #1 video game seller should know better.

Take action now and urge Wal-Mart to stop selling religious
violence this holiday season. Click here:

Ah, "Left Behind". There's a movie coming - will we be urging a boycott of all movie theatres? Don't get me wrong, this whole franchise is disgusting theology (although mildly interesting fiction). But really, shopping at WalMart is an inherently unethical act to begin with.

RevMatt: "shopping at WalMart is an inherently unethical act to begin with."

Indeed. Among other things, Wal-Mart has practically retired the annual trophy as "Sweatshop Retailer of the Year" from the Maquila Solidarity Network.

I would buy this game every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Because I think video games and the religious right are kind of similar: both are just a fantasy world.

I can tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

I hope kids will too, with proper parental supervision

I tried to buy a copy online, but it doesn't seem to come in a Mac version. Woe is me! I feel left behind. I think the Mac friendly part of the religious right's video game franchise focusses on the other end of the bible - you know, the part about the apple.

But Madmonk it does not offend you because you don't believe in the Bible anyway. To someone who believes in the Bible it is very offensive and I worry because MOST children are not supervised when they watch TV or play video games and they are really going to get the wrong idea about Christianity.

Serena, it is strange to hear you say that, since Biblical literalists are HUGE supporters of this franchise. "Left Behind" is explicitly a tactic being used to recruit new fundamentalists. It is often praised as an excellent tool in the search to convert.

I won't buy it, because the theology is gross, and I don't want to support these people or their perversion of Christianity. Same reason I won't buy a copy of Mel Gibson's Passion.

Rev Matt I don't think that we should scare people into Heaven especially children. Also, I do not agree with violent video games of any kind because I think it does not take a psychologist to figure out that this desensitizes people to violence and then violence even becomes a thrill. I do not think that it is healthy.

If we scare someone into Heaven we have to wonder if they are really saved because becoming a Christian is a choice. How many people when given a choice and have a gun to their head will choose what the person who is holding the gun to their head wants them to?

I agree wholeheartedly Serena. It saddens me greatly that so many people who call themselves Christian consider fear and shame to be legitimate "tools" in "gaining converts".

Come on, there are a lot more out there! We're getting convert's everyday! We have three Mac's in this house (huge supporters!)

I feel ill whenever I see an ad for this new video game and again as what was previously stated I am ashamed to be lumped in with these fundamentalists. I mean why are guns involved at all? When someone doesn't convert in the game shouldn't the child's knowledge of the bible and ability to quote scripture be tested instead of pulling out a weapon. I thought it wasn't up to us anyway, we are not in charge of the harvest, the chaff are left for God to sort out!
