The Walking Dead tv show (based on the comic book series by the same name) is about groups of survivors who are living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. It hit tv about the same time pop culture became obsessed with mystical creatures like vampires and werewolves (think Twilight Saga) Each week the characters are faced with 'what am I willing to do to protect my life and the lives of my loved ones? - in a survival mode/lawless situation.' Anyone else watch it?

Yep. My husband got me into it, and now he won't watch it! He got bored when they stayed on the farm for a while. He also read some of the comic books, but didn't read too far, so now he can't even answer my questions about how what's happened differs from the comics. lol So basically he left me hanging!
As for the timing, I actually see a big difference from the vampires. I'm in the generation that grew up on Buffy, that's when vampires were cool. The twilight set is younger for the most part. Zombies became popular with my age group a bit over 5 years ago. Shortly after the pirate craze.

Wasn't there also an alien invasion craze maybe a bit before the pirate craze?

The zombie subgenre (in the sense of carnivorous resurrected corpses rather than the zombie slaves of earlier lore) dates to Night of the Living Dead in 1968 and has had a rabid and growing following ever since. The modern explosion of popularity is, of course, more recent but I'd say it goes back more than 5 years. The zombie comedy Return of the Living Dead and its sequels were certainly popular enough in the eighties to start the "brain eating zombies" meme (prior to that they just ate you, period).
While I like some individual zombie movies (including the aforementioned Night of the Living Dead), I've never got into the zombie subgenre the way I have vampires and I'm now rather sick of hearing the word "zombie". If the whole thing went away for a decade or two, I wouldn't miss it. That said, I'm hearing great things about Walking Dead and it is available on Netflix so I may give it shot. Right now, though, I'm just getting into the UK sci-fi series Primeval but it's a fairly short run (only 36 episodes over 5 seasons) so I'll probably be looking for something new by the end of the year.

Mendalla, please tell me that (mainstream) guys have not been planning for the zombie apocalypse since 1968! lol I agree that the subgenre has been around awhile. I'm not really sure when the full-on craze started.
Another show I've been enjoying is Revolution. Kinda zombie apocalypse-ish but more realistic (no zombies) although no generators, batteries etc. is still a stretch.
