Okay, I got some money this Christmas to get a subscription to a Christian/church-based magazine. What should I get? What have you found helpful? Don't say the UC Observer, 'cuz I already get that.

Hi, Ahyde -
Are you looking for a 'general interest' type church magazine... or something that's more focused?

The United Church Observer is a good general magazine which covers faith, spirituality, and what's happening in our denomination..

Sojourners is an American social justice & faith mag

For a more academic spin on mainline church life The Christian Century is a good bet.

Is there anything that doesn't have a definitive "liberal" or "conservative" bent, but that tries to engage the entire church spectrum? It can be either general interest or ministry/leadership specific.

Seriously, if you want to become a Jehovah's witness (which would be the biggest mistake of your life BTW) then you should subscribe to Watchtower magazine which is the official magazine of the witnesses. It's probably extremely conservative but so are the Jehovas so it does represent the entire populus. I wouldn't recommend becomming a Jehova because they're a pretty terrible denomination to say the least but you can learn to make great jokes about them if you get their 'zine.

I don't know any publication without a "bent" one way or another. I, too, would recommend Sojourners, for a look at cultural and social justice topics. It's on the liberal end of the spectrum. When it comes to ministry/leadership topics, Discipleship Journal is on the conservative side. It covers a wide range of themes, and focuses on practical applications in areas of spiritual growth and mentoring. The big advantage is that you can access all their archived issues for free, and still have your gift money for another subscription elsewhere. ;) http://www.navpress.com/dj.asp

I'd recommend Billy Graham's magazine "Decision".
IT ALWAYS HAS CURRENT EVENT STORIES THAT ARE VERY DIVERSIFIED EXPERIENCES. Oops! Caps lock on. I wasn't yelling, honest.
It also has a bible study at the back every month by Anne Graham-Lotz.
Check it out here:
