WOW players -- challenges & delights

For those who don't play: WOW = World of Warcraft, a mmporg (Massively-Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) which has millions of players, all paying approx $15/month to play.

For those who do, tell us a bit about yourself: server, main/alts, lvl, prof

I am interesting in your thoughts on the social/political aspects in-game from the perscpective of living your faith

What do you do in-game, that you feel is a direct result of your faith or social conciousness?
What do you consider the biggest challenges?
Driving into the details: what do you do around racist, sexist or homophobic chat. How does your guild behave, and what role do you fill in it? What do you do to increase the overall positive nature of the game.
What learnings have you had from game playing, that can apply to real-life and communities, such as in volunteering, or mixed age groups.

Mal'Ganis, PingaDohtor, lvl60 troll shaman, resto-spec'd, through to AQ-20 & BWL (currently on sabbatical until expansion pack)
Hakkar, Jaelle, lvl 54 dwarf rogue, combat spec'd,
Mulitple lower lvl alts 20-40 on Mal'Ganis and Hakkar

What do you do in-game, that you feel is a direct result of your faith or social conciousness?
-- sharing the wealth -- i love to do a drive by & give bags/enchants for new players
-- building community -- encouraging people to welcome new people, and working
-- respecting differences -- learning to value the gifts each brings, and the choices made,.
-- conflict resolution -- this is especially important in guilds, helping to name the various motivators: raid/pvp/social, without being dismissive of them, ie, how do we live in diversity, and when is it best to just agree to move on.

What do you consider the biggest challenges?
-- the same thing as in real life, offensive behaviour, when people do not realize the impact of their behaviour on community. determining when it is appropriate to work with the person, so they can see the impact, and when it is better to just let it go

Enough of me.let's hear your gaming experiences.

Sorry, I play Jedi Academy.

Our clan has a no insult rule and a respect other gamers rule. Any time someone made a comment that was homophobic, racist, or explicit, we admins use /amkick from the server.

That's something for a group of late-teens - 30somethings playing a game online.

from WOW to on-line gamers

I am surprised by the one-shot kick.
Anyone else do that?

Cenarius server:(the one I am concentrating on presently)

And yes it looks like I have a short attention span...I do! hehe

Fanaxoad - hunter - lvl 21
Lakshmi - rogue - lvl 15
Kaltes - warrior - lvl 11
Media - druid - lvl 11
Dainlyn - warlock - lvl 11
Staller - priest - lvl 11

What do you do in-game, that you feel is a direct result of your faith or social conciousness?

That positive is not possible without negative and negative without positive.

That there is no such thing as ultimate evil or ultimate good. Nothing can be 100% one way or the other.

That all life is sacred and precious.

That each of us has our own unique set of skills, talents, and abilities in this incarnation, we must discover what we have and use them to grow and evolve.

That we must learn and respect each other for his/her own unique set of skills, talents, and abilities.

That everyone is here for each other as well as for ourselves, we are all in this together.

What do you consider the biggest challenges?

I will have to agree with you on the offensive behaviour that occurs...and wish life as in some forums have an ignore button :)

OK, I'll admit to it :)

I play lightbringer only. Earthroot - 60 rest druid, Bluespark - 60 (last week!) fire mage. My wife has a 57 Pally, and a 40 hunter, both currently in moth balls. I may be resurrecting the Hunter shortly. We have a shortage in our guild.

What do you do in-game, that you feel is a direct result of your faith or social conciousness?

I suck at being a pretend capitalist almost as much as I do at being a real one :) I'm forever giving things away, or doing things for free that others would charge for.

What do you consider the biggest challenges?

Finding time to play :) I have a hard time putting up with the attitudes of (Seemingly) the majority of players.

Driving into the details: what do you do around racist, sexist or homophobic chat. How does your guild behave, and what role do you fill in it?

Continuing from above - I've found a guild that is mostly composed of adults, most of us with kids. We have at least two parent-child teams, in fact :) While there is a large range of ages, we are all people who are respectful and mature in our discussions. Well, when none of the women are on, the fart jokes do come out on occasion. But other than that ;)

In the wider game, I won't group with or talk to people who are being hateful or hurtful in their talk. I ask them once to knock it off, and if that doesn work, leave. I've left in the middle of instances, in fact. Which probably why I made it to 51 with Earth essentially solo, and with virtually no instance runs.

What do you do to increase the overall positive nature of the game.

I mostly concentrate on not contributing to the crap. To be honest, my main desire when playing is to relax. Given that I spend most of my days trying to work with people, I'm happy to mostly ignore those who aren't my friends once I am relaxing :)

What learnings have you had from game playing, that can apply to real-life and communities, such as in volunteering, or mixed age groups.

Nothing that I haven't seen in the internet in general. Namely, that anonymity encourages small minded bigots to spread their hatred. There seems to be no better way to encourage RESPONSIBLE free speech than to get past the anonymity.

Back on Thunderhorn after a brief sojourn on PVP server Blackwing Lair where one just gets tired of being ganked all the time. My main is Orchah a lvl 59 hunter, have pyrama a lvl 56 fire mage, kmart a lvl 42 priest who serves as my banker, py lvl 42 warrior, Teletubby lvl 50 rogue, Barlence a lvl 26 Pally...and a couple others.

It's a social thing for me. The guys in the guild (and they are all guys) and I began exploring this type of Game with Asheron's Call when it hit the shelves in 1998 or 99. We've been playing together just about daily for most of that time. I get to be the lone canadian and enjoy our conversations on Teamspeak about everything from family to world affairs....
