Yarnbombing

Yarn bombing, yarnbombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk

Do any of you do it or seen it done?

I have seen it done - I love it!  Some years ago a bridge in Cambridge ON was done - really cool!  And a house on Toronto Island was done as an 'art installation' a few years back.  I like it.  I hope after the fact the yarn is made into something useful tho!

I like the pom-pom hanging out the end of the tank gun!  Nice touch.

I think yarn-bombing is awesome! I saw it a couple of years ago when someone did a smaller project - they covered some railings outside of our local community college. It looked awesome and was kept up for months.

Okay, but knitting is hardly a quick process. How the hell are they doing this? Leveraging the power of 100 knitters at a time and stitching it all together?

Pretty much, chansen.  Do you knit BTW?  Wouldn't surprise me :-)   I taught my husband many years ago, but he didn't keep going with it - prefers the noisier stuff!

My wife learned to knit a couple of years ago. She's always done cross stitch and crochet.

I never really considered it a subversive medium, though.

I have heard of yarn bombing, and even agreed to help a friend yarn up her bicycle. She is in Fort Worth Texas and loved the idea of a Canadian contribution. I think I need to check in with her about this. I even saw a Canadian flag pattern that could be easily modified for the bike.

I haven't seen any yarn bombing in person.

Yarnbombing? Yes, I heard of it. It is a particularly Irish phenomenon. Those who have kissed the Blarney Stone once too often bombard you with their yarns.wink

I got to see yarnbombing this week in Kamloops. It was awesome to see. As for chansen's comment about time, apparently different organizations were asked to contribute. The yarn store we visited did three trees. We saw that some trees were covered with old knitted or crocheted afghans. There were knitted or crocheted hats hung from trees with messages of "hats off to the athletes in the BC Senior Games". I enjoyed seeing this in person and would love to yarnbomb somewhere myself, or contribute at least.
