Eileen, you request that someone be your 'friend' by going to their profile page and clicking on 'Friend Request'. If the other person accepts you as a friend then you will see their avatar in your Friends area. If someone wants you to be their 'Friend' a message will come up for you on your screen that so and so wants to be your friend do you accept them kind of thing. Then under your Friends area at the top line you will find the avatars of your Friends.
The only thing I have figured out you do with your new friends is to smile when you see them lined up on your computer screen and you can easily send a wondermail from there.
