I like humour that is unintended. I went to a halloween party once. My boyfriend, who is very tall with a squarish jaw and has a deep voice, arrived late after a late shift at work. People always compare him to Kramer from Seinfeld...he has  the hair.  He had to wear a dark suit jacket for work and arrived in his work uniform. My friend who was having the party knows him, however, her new boyfriend didn't. When he came through the door and was saying hello, my friend's boyfriend turned and aaid, "Look, it's Frankenstein!". He was serious, and meant no insult. My friend who was holding the party and I were laughing so hard we were in tears. My poor boyfriend. .He took it well, however. He's that kind of guy.

I have had some of my best laughs on Wonder Cafe. I like all kinds of humour. Tongue in cheek, low brow, high brow,  potty, you name it. We have some very intelligent, funny, witty people here.

Anything that is relationship appropriate.

There are things I can and will easily say to those that I know that I will not say to others simply because I do not know what the other will hear or how the other regards me.  

In a text based medium without the context of relationship humour is dangerous.  Emoticons were created to blunt the edge of what we have typed.  Even so emoticons are no substitute for relationship.

Without the context of relationship so much of what is intended as laughing with becomes laughing at and I know few who desire to be the object of ridicule.  If somebody is the punchline to the joke odds are strong they aren't comfortably sharing in the laughter.

Hmmm.. Reading RevJohn's comment caused me to reflect.I hope I didn't come across as mean.. I am not one to laugh "at" people, unless they are on stage to get a laugh...I just like accidental humour...freudian slips and such...the moment I described above was lost in translation and perhaps better not shared...it was one of those "you had to be there" moments. It would never have happened had it not been for the fact that it was a costume party-- noone was trying to make fun of anyone, it was an innocent mistake that was actually quite funny-- not taken as an offence by my boyfriend who has a very goofy sense of humour...he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is good....lol... because it seems that I do.

And now I think I'd better stop apologizing because it's making me feel guilty.

(I also like self-deprecating jokes...but I'm so terrible at writing them.)

The first time I tried to make a joke on the Wondercafe, not everyone recognized it as a joke, and I got a couple of angry responses.

Just a few days ago, Seeler, I misinterpreted a joke on another thread. I thought that a WCafer was insinuating that another WCafer was a Nazi or perhaps a white supremacist, but it turned out that the person to whom the insinuation was directed at found it funny, and I seem to have been the only person on the thread who did recognize that it was a joke.

There is a lot about humour that is visual. A person's tone of voice or their body language tips us off that they mean to be funny. We don't see the body language or hear the tone of voice on a discussion thread, so these kinds of misunderstandings can easily occur.

I don't like mean humour.  

I couldn't enjoy life without humour.

Just as you share a meal you can share humour to celebrate relationship.

It's no coincidence that my favourite folks all know how to make me laugh - and it's gratifying to share my humour with them.

But humour is an individual thing - and therein lies the problem. It's fine if folks "don't get it", but sometimes without meaning to, you offend.

(Especially, as I've discovered, if you're an Aussie on a Canadian site!)

Self-deprecation is a favourite form of Aussie humour - but, I don't think it's as common in Canada?

Now offending others is never my intention when it comes to humour - so I just tell them the truth,that wasn't my intention and I'm sorry they were upset.

Humour's intention to me is to strengthen a bond - not to weaken it.

Is a Cosmological  Joke all that is created? That is not odd ... just funny and many stoics in the temple just don't get it ...

I was asked in church why I tormented this particular lady's grandchildren ... leading them to bubble and laugh. She wanted to know why I did this? I responded that as a child all I could remember of church was a bunch of long, grim faces ... in the sad situation the world is in right now ... do we need more destitute Joie ... or some positive desire to make things better in the future?

Somehow the whole process of thought comes across as if we didn't wish to know the cause until we see it goen ... future tense of love as it arrives blindly ...

As a truth you could not tell this to authorities that believe they already know all they need to know. Consider the governments of the world ... are they all in healthy shape? Sometimes I look around and  everything seems absurd.....the other night on the CNN..."Countdown to Crisis" with a clock showing 4 days 2 hours 15 seconds and counting...they since changed it to "Debt Ceiling Countdown" or something....The ramifications aren't funny, but the absurdity of it all is so funny, in the moment all I can do is laugh.

The GOP tea party circus is very laughable when one looks through a humorous lense...when Donald Trump was thinking about running for president, I thought, "Is this a farce?" I love watching Stephen Colbert (especially) and Jon Stewart because they see the humour in it all.

Humour is one of the strengths of being human -- you see what happens when people get too solemn?  They fly planes into buildings, ban pornography and get between 2 consenting adults.  Sheesh!

I can use humour as a way of 'feeling out' people to see if they are safe.

My eldest daughter, ten years old, gets my humour. Sometimes she say's' Haw Haw that wasn't funny Mom'  but at least she gets what I was aiming at. We poke fun at each other and ourselves. Sometimes we laugh together like loons.  My seven year old you can joke with but you can't tease HER. Still way too sensitive. Our two year old boy shows a sense of humour already, putting on funny hats etc. He also loves body sounds (burps and farts).

I always poke fun at myself because I am such a flawed human that I'm a rich source of material.

But I found that on this forum, not online in general, but on this particular forum people thought I really hated myself or had a low self esteem... It could be worry, it could be a Canadian thing.... it could also be that it is a religious site...I have met those who think no dancing, no sex, no touching yourself and God forbid no laughing.

I like watching those practical joke comedy skits on the Comedy Network. I can't remember the name of the show off hand...but I think most of them are filmed in Montreal. There was one, filmed in a mall,  where they hollowed out a  xerox machine and a petite person climbed in...they set it up like a self serve photocopying service. Each person shreeked and hit he roof as they lifted up the lid to the Xerox and there was a person's face pressed up making funny faces underneath the glass!  The funniest person I remember was an older man, didn't look easy to scare, who yelped and  flapped his hands and hopped away.

I'm watching a rerun of This Hour Has 22 Minutes right now.

I love shows like This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Mercer Report. The comedy is nationalistic, yet self-deprecating. Anyone who can laugh at themselves is a-ok with me!

As for sharing humour on this site, I play it by ear. If I think of something funny that others will appreciate, I will share it.

The talent of giving something of yourself

One thing that I think is often overlooked with humour is that it's an attempt to give of oneself - to share with the other/others.

When it's not received as such by the listener/s it can be just as upsetting for the homourist as the listener.

There are times when humour can offend - but if that wasn't the intention - it's just as sad for the humourist as the listener. (nobody likes being misunderstood).

Thus, using humour risks your vulnerability, but giving of yourself with good intention is an honest gift, IMO.
