parting company

When I was a child it was customary to part from family or friends with the words "Good Bye".

When I was a young adult it was usual to part with the words "See Ya".

Today I realised that even casual aquaintances seem to part with the words "Love Ya".

What is going on - if they tell everyone that they love them what is left to tell their partners?

Yeah, I guess that's one of the drawbacks of Jesus' message (love everyone) :3

LOL @ Inanna!

Kay, I don't mind the expression - but I do mind when it's clearly not genuine (ie. just an expression).

I blame the Americans.

Once Macca's started sprouting like mushrooms after rain here in Oz - we heard the expression "have a nice day".

At first this was met with startled Aussies saying, "Uh?"

In no time at all it became a virus and everyone seemed to catch it.

It's the same with, "love ya".

It's not an expression my family use - and when acqaintances say it I don't get the feeling they do, somehow.

To me there is a difference when someone says "love ya" and someone says "I love you" . . .

Love ya is very casual and like posted above, it is now used as a parting remark.

I love you is more personal and shared between partners and lovers and family members and people who are close to one another.

LB, I know a few people who say "take care . . ." when parting from others just like your post.

I have a few close friends who say "love ya" and I answer in kind.  I'm comfortable with that bc I know that they mean it and I do too.  I do the same with my nieces.

Otherwise I tend to go with "take care".

I don't think I'd be too comfortable if an acquaintance said "love ya" but then again maybe if she was nice I'd just be hopeful lol.

Of course that assumes that everyone has a partner.

Not all of us are partnered up, nor do we want to be.

On parting, most Aussies say, "see ya".

Except my six years old granddaughter.

Me: "See you later, alligator."

Her: "in a while, crocodile".

Somehow, we never get tired of it.

Pilgrims Progress,

hey, I've heard that used here as well :3  Cross-culturization :3

Whenever my mom says "See you later alligator" I usually reply "In a while, mommadile" :3

I always used to say that with my Mom when I was little Pilgrims! Sometimes instead of "in awhile crocodile," it was "see you soon big baboon."

Usually when I am parting ways with someone, I say "See ya later," or simply "Bye!"

If someone is going on a trip, I sometimes say "Safe Home".

'safe home'  -- neat, I've never heard that.

To most people I just say good bye or bye. With my family (partner and child) we say I love you when leaving each other even for the day (but still say 'bye' as well).  I never say 'love ya' to anyone and would personally feel uncomfortable if a not so close friend said that. But I have said 'Love You' on my son's facebook wall -- I wondered if he'd be less embarrassed with his friends reading it than 'I Love You'. Interesting the tone shift when dropping one word ....

"love you" is becoming more popular in Oz.

But in my own extended family only one Aunt and my cousins (her kids) uses it.

"I love you" is rarely used.

The only times I ever heard/used it were during love making -or when someone close to you is seriously ill.

I guess there's a certain shyness about saying the words, but that doesn't mean it's not felt.

I think you know when you're loved, but I think it's important to say it to kids - as they mightn't understand that you can be upset by their behaviour and still love them.

If i'm leaving for a short period of time I'll say "see ya" or "catch ya later" to my friends "bye" to everyone else.

I always say "love you"  followed with a "bye" to my family.

I will say "love ya" or even "love you" to my friends as well but not every day. If I say it I mean it and I think they know that.

By the way, when I first saw the title of this thread I thought that maybe you were parting company with wondercafe, kaythecurler. I was glad to read the thread and realize that wasn't the case.

My mom always says "Drive safe.  Don't speed.  Don't hit any skunks.  Call me when you get home."

The skunk part is because I managed to hit two of them in the first summer that I had a car, both times when the car was FULL of stuff that I was moving from one location to another.

I wouldn't say "love ya" to acquaintances...it would be too weird for me.  I do get tired of "good bye" sometimes, though.  I change it up a lot:

See you later.

Talk to you later.

Later.

Good night.

Bon voyage.

Au revoir. (did I spell that correctly?)

See you tomorrow (or Monday).

And occasionally I break in to the good bye song from the Sound of Music.
