Peace

Anyone up for reviving the" WAR IS OVER if you want it" movement of John Lennon fame? Oh, to have been alive then...we need people like him.

I think the signs should've been at least as big as the ads, though!

EDIT: Ironically, I just looked up the 2 words empathy now myself and came across a site of the same name dedicated to non violent communication.

...btw... just in case this thread gets misconstrued by anyone....I am speaking purely of the message of peace and how to work on that. I admire what the man was able to do in regards to promoting peace as a human being with immense talent,  and a public figure who could financially afford to put up billboards all over the US with his own money  and got people's attention and got people of all ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds to start assuming peace not war in their minds that helped put an end to the Vietnam war, and I am not speaking about anything else. I say this in anticipation of a debate about John Lennon's atheist position in his song Imagine. His beliefs with regard to religion were his, not  mine, and in the interest of  peace I really, really don't want to have that argument...I just want to discuss peace...how to love our neighbours, all of our neighbours, better to achieve it.

Achieving peace on the level that John and Yoko believed possible. Begins with each individual. They must first find peace within themselves. It may not be a perfect peace, it doesn't have to be, it is simply a place where peace starts.

This peace then can be shared with others, and they in turn share peace, until the entire world is of the same heart of peace. People must Love and Respect each other unconditionally. The first steps toward Peace.

People "Must truly seek and desire peace with all of their natures" if true lasting peace is ever to be achieved.

Let it start with me. Let it start with you. Let us be the voice of Peace that can never be silenced.

Kimmio,

Your voice IS carrying. It isn't easy for people to come up with solutions to bring about  peace. It is easier to come up with reasons to justify war and hatred than to accept that these things continue only because people all over the world refuse to lay down their weapons and truly want peace.

That was a Wonderful Article. It reminds me of the Free Hugs events that take place from time to time. It is worth putting a smile on some ones face. Like she said. It may be the one thing that makes that persons day.

A Smile and Hug can change the world.

If there is to be peace in the world,

There must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,

There must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,

There must be peace between neighbors.

If there is to be peace between neighbors,

There must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,

There must be peace in the heart.

It's 2500 years old and still rings true today.

I've been busy lately and not checking relationships, but had to contribute to this now that I found it.  I would dearly love to post a pic of me in my hippy days, but I will refrain.

What John tried to do touched me deeply and I understand his frustration and self doubt, but ultimately he did accomplish good. It's rare that I give the peace sign now, but I always do likewise when someone gives me the peace sign.

I've gone through a lot of stages of thought on the subject, like John, and come to a sort of inner, limited, subdued peace.

I had this up on my wall when I was 15.

Here's a nice one:

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, who may in fact be legendary but is credited as the author of the Tao te Ching, the founding work of Taoism. Taoism is one of several Eastern philosophical and religious traditions that have influenced me. Lao Tzu is kind of like Homer in the West, who is credited as the author of two of our culture's most enduring texts and yet we don't really know who he was beyond some possibly apocryphal legends.

That particular passage appears as a reading in the UU hymnbook Singing the Living Tradition and I, among others, have used it in my fellowship.

Hi Elanor,

You and I must be about the same age.. aaah, .Keanu Reeves, when he was young and pretty his monotone voice melted my heart...I remember the mini 60's revival at the end of the 80's...then it just kind of fizzled out...once people went to college or university I guess money became a priority over peace for most people, similar to the 60's.

Elanorgold's picture

Hmm, well, I did a bit of college but my main goal was to become a hermit in the woods... I ended up taking a 2.75 year backpacking trip to Britain, during which I patched my jeans to kingdom come, took a 10 week no shampoo test, made bannock for all our bread needs and wrote with a dip pen in beet juice! It got to be a bit much, especially the no chocolate bars because they came in plastic wrappers bit. I was trying too hard, it hurt. I also learned more about the world and figured that world peace is not possible due to human nature, our short life spans, and the size of our population on earth. Maybe some time in the future when we have a one world government like in Star Trek, peace may be possible, but at present I think the best we can hope for is small peace, local peace, and peace within.

But yeah, Keanu was sooo cute. I loved him in River's Edge and Bill and Ted's~~~nANd on Saturday Night Live... River Phoenix too, to a lesser extent. Another peace man who died too soon. RIP River.

I graduated in '92, how bout you?

Elanor: I'm probably about 2 years older...graduated in 89, but was on the young side of the scale when I started school.

I had a big crush on Keanu too, and guys with longish hair! I didn't get into the "hippie" vagabond thing, and I don't mean that in any derogatory way...some of my friends did, and I envied their free-spirited way of life...I've made lots of live choices and changes to education and "career" track etc....never did reach the status quo, and now don't find it to be a priority. Never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, just that I wanted to help people. So my recent jobs have been focused on that--in non-profit mostly.  I live in the city and have met people from all over the world, but have not travelled too much. It seems most of my old friends  have professional careers and live in the suburbs now. They're happy though, and I'm happy they're happy. It's just kind of ironic how things turn out

Elanorgold's picture

Elanorgold

Yeah, ironic. That's great that you're working in a field where you help people, and meeting people from other places. I met a lot of people from other places traveling in the UK and working in hostels. I think there's bonuses both to a free spirited life and a set career. I have quite an alternative life now, self employed. But I know each position has reasons to envy the other. I found it impossible to choose a career too at 18, 19, 20, 21.

I started a thread about careers a whole ago, and I determined that most people fall into their futures through chance and circumstance. It's a beautiful tapestry, how events weave and twine.

I wrote Keanu a really childish fan letter when I was 15/early 16... after watching Dangerous Liasons... Embarrassing to remember! But yeah, always the long haired guys, I haven't changed too much actually! What is it with boys nowadays all cutting their hair short!?! Don't they know they're much more attractive with some lovely swishing colour and shine, showing off their health and vitality!?!

John's own solution for peace, from one of his "bed ins", is to "stay in bed and grow your hair". "Make love, not war"

All he was saying, "Is Give Peace a Chance".

Kimmio's picture

Kimmio

Waterfall: Sure, why not? Imagine if all our politicians took some conscious time off to do that...the world might be a better place ;)

I also think John's follow up to that...the WAR IS OVER campaign, was brilliant!

Kimmio's picture

Kimmio

Elanor: LOL, the fan letter. I probably drew hearts with our initials in them!

Yes, still a soft spot for the long hair, but it's no longer a priority. My partner keeps his short (for the time being) because of work, and because he doesn't have an interest in maintaining its health and vitality)...lol...ah, it's okay, it suits him short as well. I would love him no matter what.

Elanorgold's picture

Mine still has his long, but it can't stay that way indefinitely, with his masculinizing maturational hairline. I have found it sad to see the hair on my favourite singers go short, it gets kinda inevitable in their 40's/50's though so I accept it. But when young men go from long to short and suddenly look so military and macho, it bothers me. I loathe the crew cut!! Hmm perhaps we should start a thread about long hair...

...yeah, Jesus, as our culture generally understands him to look, has a good look I must say!

It's okay, we don't need a new thread, this discussion is making me laugh...which brings peace.

Jesus was a lovable dork.  I wonder if his virgin birth was general knowledge and, if so, how his classmates treated it?  "Hey, no father!"  and then would Jesus have been a good version of Damien in Omen.  "OMnothing! I hit him and He...he TURNED MY FIG JUICE INTO THE MOST DELICIOUS FORTIFIED WINE I'VE EVER TASTED...ooo, I'm trippin"  Did Jesus play jokes on the Headmaster of the school?

Headmaster:  Why is my filing system PERFECT?  Who dares?!

And so it goes.

Btw, that piccy of Keanu, Elanorgold?  My father used to have BEAUTIFUL SOFT LOCKS OF WAVY HAIR much like that...now he goes around looking like a chemo patient (he isn't).

Kimmio, me too! Twice now~ I used to be able to size pics in "image properties" but since the latest posting box changes it doesn't work any more. Beats me. But this one's not too big... at least it fits in the screen if you slide over. Ho hum. A pine for the old days of picture editing...

Elanor, It's okay, it got my attention!

I still don't know how to use some functions on WC, like the quote function. Someone gave me instructions but I lost track of the thread. It took me a few tries to learn how to post a video. Not very user friendly (for those like myself who are not so technically inclined...cut/ copy and paste is all I know).

Sorry, reply a bit late...

Quote is pretty good, you just hit quote, and type your reply below it. If you want to break the quote up, you have to put more quotes around all the snips, just like the original snip... That's where it starts to get complicated. Try it out though. I don't know how to quote something from outside the forum, or from a different thread, or multiple quotes in a single reply though...

I used to be able to size every picture up exactly how I wanted it, which was very useful in our Teen Hearthrobs thread! Which was soooo fun. It won best pop culture thread of the year last year! I was chuffed, even though technically, I started the thread in January.., Oh well! Crazyheart says we won't have Wondie awards next year, so it's ok then. Man it was fun. Keanu was in there too, with his shirt off ; )  Apparantly, in Australia, among our age group of women, Keanu was the most mentioned hearthrob amongst a select group of Aussie women, according to a Pilgrim poll. According to that same poll, Clarke Gable won for the older women, and the young girls... oh darn, I can't remember who they said... maybe it was Zac Ephron or Robert Patinson... Both of which are pretty hot in the right context.
