Common Ground

This is a video from an American group called Common Ground.  It is, IMHO, a testatment to the hope and power of working together for peaceful resolutions.

Fear is the only thing that prevents us from being free and living in peace. We are afraid of loneliness, afraid of death, afraid of change, afraid of those who are different from us. We are afraid of life itself.

Fear is one of the biggest glamours that grips the world today. We need to tackle this fear with understanding and with the confidence that despite all the appearences of despair, we are truly living on the threshold of a dream.

But its up to us to make that dream a reality. With sharing comes justice, and with justice comes trust, and with trust come peace.

Nice video LB.

Thank you for sharing this LB.  Now I'm moved to share it with the many people I know who would find it relevant to there own way of being in this world.

Good stuff!

I see they are promoting  a movie titled  " Divided We Fall".  I think its in sub-titles. Its on a free movie site but my computer's old so I don't want to download what's required to get it. I think I've tried these free movies before with no luck. Its wonderful to see the young people  speaking up for peace.

Great video, LB!

I agree with Neo, and would like to add that the best thing to overcome fear is the experience and practice of unitive consciousness and love.

I agree Neo, fear is a factor but there are other influences.  Indeed, my greatest fear is that of manipulation.  I fear those forces, powerful and influential forces, that feed fear.   If the world is to find peace, people have to stop feeding the manipulative monsters ....

While finding the above video I stumbled upon the writings of Chris Steadman - I recommend reading the following in its entirety ....

“Should the Nonreligious Join in Interfaith Work?”

An excerpt....

The idea that interfaith cooperation is necessary to advance social progress was not a conclusion I came to overnight. In fact, after I stopped believing in God, I spent some time walking about decrying the "evils of religion" to anyone who would listen. I wanted nothing to do with the religious, and was sure they wanted nothing to do with me.

After reflecting on several episodes where I neglected to engage the religious identities of people I otherwise respected and admired, I realized that I had been so busy talking that I wasn't listening. I was treating "religion" as a concept instead of talking to people who actually lived religious lives. And when I started listening, something interesting happened. I realized that my approach to religion was lazy and distorted: I'd been thinking of the texts, not the practices; the stereotypes, not the people. It was only once I observed the actual practices of religious communities—and, more importantly, engaged with religious people and their stories—that I was able to see the benefits of collaborating across lines of ideology and identity differences.

Now I see interfaith cooperation as the key to resolving the world's great religious problems. All the more, I want my secular community to join me, to share their stories and learn from those of the religious. And, more importantly, I want us to join with the religious in working to resolve the problems that afflict our world. Together, we will accomplish so much more.

I contend that fear of the unknown is what fuels one's anger and opens one up to manipulation.  Humanity will not stop killing each other until we not only listen to the other's story but recognize that it is their reality, their truth, and at the same time realize their truth does not have to change ours....

except, perhaps, for the better.

Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.

Seeing the world as "One", regardless of religion or non-religious beliefs, is going to be, in the end, how we survive in this world. This doesn't mean that we become communistic and lose our individuality. There can be unity through in diversity.

As JFK says in your quote, we're all in this world together and we all share the same dreams and the same hopes. So what's stopping us?

Hi Neo and LB:

Yes, public opinion is being manipulated, especially in the USA.

There is a lot of fearmongering, fueled by big capital, going on south of the border. This is becoming especially apparent again at this time, in the mid-term election campaign. I wonder when JFK's or Martin Luther King's dream will come true?

Spiritual practice is our relationship with others. If Spirit is regarded as that which unites us all, and Spirit comes first, then our individual actions will manifest themselves as "Spirit first" and our interactions with others will reflect that.

This post reminds me of the words in a song Elvis Presley sang . . . If I Can Dream . . .

There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true
Oh why

There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away
the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun
Where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear

We're lost in a cloud
With too much rain
We're trapped in a world
That's troubled with pain
But as long as a man
Has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly

Deep in my heart there's a tremblin' question
Still I am sure that the answer, answer's gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true......right now
