I have three bibles that I call my very own. The women's devotional bible (number one. There is a number two out now.) I was given this when I gave my life to the Lord as an adult. It is NIV
For my 35th I got the "women of destiny" bible. (I chose that one myself.) New King james
Last Christmas I was online shopping with either Chapters or Amazon.ca and added a bible to the order for myself. I wanted one that was smaller and more durable. This is the NIV too I think.
It is leather with a closure and fits perfectly in my purse.
My husband has several bibles. Must be pushing close to ten by now. He is like women and shoes. He likes to compare different translations and Study Bibles.
Tell me about your bible or bibles. Is there a story behind any? What translations?

i have three... one that i failed to return to my catholic school when i graduated, which has sentimental value more than anything else, and a 'new american bible for catholics' which i got when i was a mentor in the RCIA program. that is the one i tend to read the most.
the third is the bible that i had when i was just a kid, its called 'the childrens picture bible - catholic edition'. its pretty chewed up, but i treat it like gold.

I'll try to remember them all:
King James Version - given to me as a teenager, with my name in gold on the front.
New English Bible (New Testament only) - I bought when it first came out on the recommendation of the minister who led Bible study. A good readable translation for the time.
Good News Bible - we used it in Sunday School where I taught. I think the copy I have now belonged to one of my kids.
New Jerusalem Bible - a widow invited me to 'help yourself' to any of her husband's books. I choose this and often used it for Bible study (Its a Catholic Bible).
Readers' Digest Condensed Bible - from the same collection.
New Revised Standard Version - paper back - given to me by my church when I graduated from my Christian Studies and Lay Ministry courses.
NRS - large print - because I liked the paper back so much but it was hard to see. This one I can read from without holding it up to my face when I'm leading a service. I love it.
The Five Gospels containing the Scholars Version of the Bible - tries to be a close in style to the original Greek as possible (for instance Mark frequently changes his tense - Jesus climbs into a boat, where he would teach the people. Also has the Gospel of Thomas which I use for reference and commentary by the members of the Jesus Seminar on words attributed to Jesus.
and
The Family Story Bible edited by Ralph Milton that is the best book of Bible stories for children that I have ever found. I used to read it to my Granddaughter particularly during Advent. Now I'm introducing it to my Grandson.
I probably have a few other Bibles around the house but I can't think of them right now.

Hi Omni,
The Five Gospels is also known as the Scholars Version. It contains Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Thomas. It is colour coded according to consensus of opinion re: the authenticity of the words attributed to Jesus. It came out in 1993, and the authors are Robert Funk, Roy Hoover and the Jesus Seminar.

Wow. it seems like everyone here has at least two copies of the bible! I have one. Just a regular old french New Testament one that I got from the grade school I was in. They handed one out to each graduating student. But whats the difference between the interpretations? I thought there was only The Bible( New and old testament), and the Tora that differed. How ignorant of me really! lol

yeah the bible has been translated and retranslated so many times (and chain translated, like...:aramaic to hebrew to greek to latin to olde english to modern english, ever heard of "lost in translation"?) that is hard to pin down the 'actual' meaning. Which is why it's good to have multipul bibles to compare.
It also helps to be a Biblical scholar fluent in latin, ancient greek, aramaic, and hebrew (oh, and english lol).

I have three:
- 1896 American Standard Version (Nelson & Sons)
- 1954 New Standard KJV 'Red Letter Edition' (Hertel Co.)
- 1984 New World Translation
New World Translation is the Jehovahs Witness bible. It has been rewritten numerous times and is not really classified as a translation rather than a rewriiten one of the KJV. They keep correcting their rewritings because they are exposed as error.
During the 1950's, Watchtower leaders went beyond interpretation by producing their own version of the Bible, with hundreds of verses changed to fit Watchtower doctrine. And, their New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures continues to be rewritten every few years, with additional changes made to bring God's Word into closer agreement with what the organization teaches.
So BrettA, I'm starting to understand where you are coming from!!!
Be Blessed, (Honestly)

There you go, IB... assuming that I've looked at the Watchtower Bible ("where [I] am coming from"), which I was given a year or two ago... No, the only one I actually use of the three (for 50+ years and counting now) is the huge 1954 version, with its many indices, charts, guides and more, red typeface for Jesus' supposed words and normal-sized very readable typeface. Hmmm... You seem wrong more often than most people I've read on this site. Are you a fundy, perchance?

Have no doubt, Bolt! I certainly do not know, much because I don't recall reading anything you've written. As fundy-ness doesn't affect people precisely the same, I'd never hazard where you're coming from. But as I've (sadly) read a fair amount from IB and I've experienced a fair number of fundies in the past ~3 years, I am indeed starting to understand where he is coming from. But we best not wander any more from the topic or we'll incur the wrath of Graeme or Serena.

The question isn't so much how many Bibles you have, but how many do you actually READ and STUDY.

I own a German Luther Bible (in German), and the English King James and NRSV versions. I read and compare all three, and have noticed significant differences between them, particularly between the German Luther version and the English versions.

Southpaw - how many Bibles do I read and study? It depends. Mostly in recent years my large print New Revised Standard Version is the one I read the most.
For study of a gospel reading I often refer to The Five Gospels. Sometimes I check out several translations: The Jerusalem Bible, The New English Bible. Sometimes I even check what Ralph Milton's take is on a particular story and I go to the Family Story Bible. Seldom to the King James unless it is for a particular reading like the 23rd Psalm that I memorized 60 years ago from that versiou.
Often it is whatever Bible is handiest at the moment - even the Good News.
However it is years since I looked at the Readers' Digest Condensed Bible. I'm not sure if I still have it.

Well we have one of the purse size variety. It's my husband's. He wants to keep it for reference sake, and we do dip in to check things on rare occasions. I was given one as a child but squished butterflies in it... We have read about the dead sea scrolls, and other books that refer to the bible, but I personally have dipped very little into the bible. A Jehova's Witness once gave me a horrified and angry look when I answered to him that I don't have a bible. I had to forcibly send him on his way! Good thing they're not all that pushy!
We also got a scarey page from Revelations taped to our door once in Alberta. It scared us some! 'Til we found out that everyone on our street got the same treatment!

I carry ASV,ESV,KJV,NASB,NIV,NRSV and TNIV as well as NAS Exhaustive Concordance. NIV is my preference. All together they weigh less than 1/2 lb. I can also listen to the bible off the same machine.
Also have about 50 NLT New Testaments in paperback for giving away. If you hold up a cardboard sign that says "will work for food" and my wife sees you, she'll give you a bible and $20.
