The meaning of Christmas

Posting drunk. Not usuallyt a good idea. Forgive the occasional (or not_ typo. Had dinner with neighbours who have become good friends. Just got home. Lot of backspacing required - wonder why? Oh yeah, drunk. No driving required, thoigh.

Should be fun to read tomorrow/

Friends. Not religious, though from religious background. Good jokes, good wine, good times for the kids, good times with the adults, and great stories. You want a meaning to secular Christmas? That;s what it is. We took pictires, we watched videos of Carter before he was hurt, we laughed, we had fun. That;s what Christmas is. It's an end of year celebration that all can enjoy. A drunken, yet sobering fest that reminds you that you're alive. I don;t know if this is Carter's last Christmas, or onw oof many. Nobpdy knows squat. We try our best, we do good things, and we are good people. And anybidy who says they know everything and we have to believe X or we burn in hell is trying to sell you something. Fuck them - they're idiots.

Be good to your friends this season. Thank them for being there fory ou. Laugh together. Be merry. Becuse that';s what it's about.

Posting while having an appointment with Dr. Funk (yes, that's what we call it on another board) can be ... interesting (or I've heard, I am pretty much a teetotaller these days).

I think Christmas is meaningful for different people on different levels and yours is as valid as any other, no matter what the Christian crowd might say. Laughing together and being merry is certainly part of what makes the season meaningful for me.

Below is a link to my reflections on the Nativity that I posted on my Wonderblog a few days back. It gets at part of what Christmas means for me. It was supposed to delivered in a service at my fellowship yesterday but the ice got in the way.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, chansen!

I posted, well, tipsy, once. Some of my posts must come across as though I'm drunk anyway. The liquor store down the street's still open for another half an hour. Maybe there's still time. ;) feeling like a bit of Bailey's right now, while I get last minute laundry and packing done. Off to visit family tomorrow. Glad you had fun with friends tonight! I'm not in the mood yet, this year. I was a bit yesterday. Once we get there, it'll be fun.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Good morning Chansen---I have called you friend here befor you asked me not to . So I have not. I don't believe this is a Christain Holiday Chansen. I believe it's a way for others to make money.I do understand  there are those who hold there Holidays thoughts at this time of year . Like our jewish friends . Like Pagons. So I do wish them well on there Holiday.I celebrate the birth and death of my Lord. Every time I wake up.This is The Day The Lord Has Made. If Mankind could walk in that way Chansen it could be a better world. When I drank I believe I would have drank with santon. If he was buying. Who knows perhappes I did. I don't really drink anymore though chansen. Oh I have a glass of wine. On a real hot day maybe a beer. Drink killed many of my family and friends. So you really don't want to get me speaking on that.  I am glad to hear you have at least one friendsmiley. I hope you enjoy  your family and friends. I believe your right in this belief. I also think the time with my GOD is best spent  when I'm with them all. May you and your family have a great Holiday .  airclean 33-Gord.

As Neo said, Christmas is differently meaningful (or not) for different people.

To me, "Christ" is a metaphor for the spirit of unity, inseparableness, non-duality or synthesis, as well as the unitive love which accompanies the experience of unity. The "Birth of Christ" is a metaphor for the birth or re-birth of the Christ spirit in us.

May the spirit of Christ be born within you!

A joyous Christmas to one and all,

Arminius

For me it's both.

The birth of Christ and ultimately Christianity.
.

A new relationship with god as shown through Christ
.

And a time to renew with friends new and old. To laugh, celebrate, remember, enjoy life and our time here.

.
To enjoy family, to share and love.
.

Celebrating with dear friends is a part of Christmas for most I would guess.

.
Merry Christmas to all

Posting drunk is definitely riskier than commenting drunk; in this forum, at least, there are no edits with a post the next day.

Happy Christmas Chansen, to both you and Carter and the rest of your family and friends. The gathering of loved ones and friends, the giving to others and the promise of hope and prosperity in the new year is what the season is all about.

And as a post script, don't let the fundies get to you, it gives them power if you overreact to them.

Cheers everyone, and have a great holiday.

Rick.

In some ways, getting drunk with people you care about reflects more the message of Christ than sitting in a pew.

Just watch Trailer Park Boys...

Heres a Christmas song written by an Australian athiest, that fits very well with what you believe is impofrtant about Christmas. For me this is one of the very few recently written GOOD Christmas songs.

Merry Christmas to you and yours and evryone at Wondercafe.

White wine in the sun never gets old. Tim Minchin is brilliant, and he really captured the secular approach to the season there, which is a hell of a lot more meaningful than pretending some kid was born in that day who was destined to die so we could be saved from his father. Or whatever metaphor you want to claim that represents.

And as it turns out, I'm a pretty good writer when I'm blotto. Who knew? I rarely get drunk. I may have to pick up a new hobby.

We gotcha Chanson ... white whine is a clearly thunk out fluid like thought ... especially when you consider the Latin "ð" as eshe or ethe or eche ... they take on a tradition of turning thunk into d'unk in a ch'unk of kohl water, or a dippy into the whine ... a light affair that goes on between friends ... eternally connected through dark unknown powers ...

And that abstract character .. didn't he turn water into hammerOIDs in my brain ... bloody funny plasma that later became known as  ... c ... or a light character to hang out about as well cocked Asian ... that extend into turkey ... the Semite (icon) of the season ... possibly a real donkey or do-do in the middle east ... that was consumed during a kohl season of rest ... so one could take time to think beyond failed desires ... unrequieted things?

I fell down ma'and now I can't get up for a while ...

Take it easy son after the laughter it'll come back at you like the soul provides and echo or ego ... compliments of the eshe ... that gets no respect in fundamentalist worlds ... they can't get their heads around such fluid thoughts as nihlism ... so something else can come up ... that's Eris and old expression about the Babylonian Storm God ... he who ranted on the concept of connection of words ... what some call God ... leading to dots and dashes ... and the a' Moor's code-X ... that's chi all about us ...

This is regardless of fundamentalists who claim to know all or everything and like  ... ï ... don't know squat or scat and yet they regurgitate what they've heard and haven't experienced as dog maas breakfast ...

Do you understand the meaning of "maas" and "Moor's" ... they generally are unknown as X ... or what marks the spot we're in ... dreadful in stoic surroundings ... it raises excitement a notch ... that might have just been a noche in a tree as a Shady Lady down the laine a bit ... that be Gabriel! She allows a man to sleep it off if you are too drunk on your own life and have nothing to share with the other as a dark flowering intellect ... such things being denied in religions of the harder variety ...

Have a hoo dle Chanson and all your banterers on the site that share silly ideas that fundamentalists are determined not to understand and thus the state on indeterminancy ... that place out there I don't know.

And dante said the mind has its own place ... generally unknown to the insiders that shun wisdom about alien things ... why I remain thus to many ... and therein an end to being a confined thought ...

Alas they still won't know ...

Hi.....I hope little Carter will enjoy many more xmas celebrations. I'm sure he will. My xmas was something like yours I guess. I had to leave home due to the ice storm. I was in the company of about 20 people xmas eve and xmas day....very festive, eat, drink,  and be merry. I didn't drink very much due to health reasons. I used to watch midnight mass...ahem...from the Vatican so I missed that...lol. I love all the gold too, all the pomp and splendour. I'm different, huh...!!!!!!...bring it on....!!!!

Ive posted while drunk quite a bit.  I'm not sure you noticed.  Sounds like you had a good secular Christmas Chanson and that is good.  Jesus would be ok with that.  (evil grin)

Just saw this.........

Although I'm not advocating getting Brahms and Liszt too often - this was one of your best posts, chansen....

There was less of the science and your personal God, logic, and more of the heart and emotion.

It showed so well your love for Carter. Your grief at his loss of function - and your fear at what the future holds.....

It also shows your understanding of life and it's way to be lived -with laughter, friends and family.

None of us wish it, but tragedy is a fact for all our lives  - and perhaps that's a bloody good reason in itself to enjoy the precious good moments......

A personal observation......

You don't need alcohol (unlike a lot of macho Aussie guys I know!) to reveal your sensitive, empathic, warm side.

I saw a glimpse of it when I met you when I came to visit Carter in the children's hospital.

I recognized you straight away -the young thin man with the little boy in a wheelchair. You hadn't seen me yet, and you were busy writing a sign which said "Welcome Aussie".

I was touched, thinking would I, in your predicament, be taking the time to do likewise?

I'll leave the last words to you, only to say that I agree 100% -

"We try our best, we do good things, and we are good people." heart
