I am trying to set up a part of our service where we sing one contemporary song that touches on the divine. I thought that we could do this once per month to start with. Songs that come to mind are Munford and Sons - I will wait for you / Michael Logan - St. Christopher (On my Way) - Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
Does anyone have any other suggestions.
Thanks

great thread! I think there is another one about music too, or maybe more.
We've used Man in the Mirror, by Michael Jackson (thought I HATE MJ & always have)
also Playing for Change.com has lots of good stuff to work with.
Hands, by Jewel - check the good lyrics
My daughter has a list of 'music that matters' that we use often at youth group and some of them are ok for church too. Not all though!

I hope this works. If not then go to YouTube and look up John Barrowman, Hero. I always imagine it to be a conversation between Mary Madeline and Jesus just before he makes the decision to sacrifice himself. Maundy Thursday when he knows what is going to happen and is doubting and is scared. She is asking him to be her hero and save her soul and offering to be his hero. I think it is a lovely song.
Thank you all for your generous suggestions.

I think this one could work really well for a Good Friday service:
This one would fit well into a service with the theme of forgiveness:
And this one is for the Creation story:

Wow. I love Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness in Dr. Who and Torchwood and knew he'd done musicals but I think this is actually the first time I have heard him sing. I remember the original version by Enrique Iglesias and this may actually be better. It's a lovely song though I think it lends itself more to a solo voice than a choir.
If I ever redo my sermon on space and spirituality (called, in true Trekkie fashion, "The FInal Frontier"), I would consider using this song as the musical meditation. Maybe even Chris' cover of "Space Oddity".

Here is a good song to play right after a reading from the book of Revelation. You really have to listen to the lyrics though, I think Ozzy even speaks in tongues because I can't understand a damn word he says.http://ccs.infospace.com/ClickHandler.ashx?du=www.youtube.com%2fwatch%3fv%3dgbxfe7DMxVo&ru=http%3a%2f%2fwww.youtube.com%2fwatch%3fv%3dgbxfe7DMxVo&ld=20140111&ap=2&app=1&c=srchresrow1&s=srchresrow1&coi=771&cop=main-title&euip=24.156.243.26&npp=2&p=0&pp=0&pvaid=f031b677a2d14efcb6a5c8f96dfec5ff&ep=2&mid=9&en=vuMFDIXn4lEeH%2bjU%2blLRgHs%2bwpLPI9SSfZ8%2bYWjT9DCn18IM35AzVzVRqdjIEnDvkAsy9so5YXY%3d&hash=5BFFBDEC127BADA0DE08BB4D0A6F30F4

For me songs of worship can also be songs of lament...grateful for what I have, and also sad for how we, not God, hurt one another and the world we live in, and songs like the above help us think about it and face it- and Young was doing that 40 years ago and still hasn't given up his calling- and they're beautiful poetic songs, whether you agree with him now or not. In many ways, including other people tapping into our conscience through songs of lament and joy, God tells us something about ourselves- searches our hearts. "You keep me searching for a heart of gold" - "you", the "I Am" in each of us? I don't think pretending everything is rosey and perfect is honest worship. To be faithful isn't easy. If it were human beings would not have messed up so much...it means wrestling with what that looks like, and what it doesn't- and relating to other human beings facing their own struggles.
