Restore Our Faith

The last comment that a priest made as CBC covered the Introduction of the Pope was "This has restored my faith in the institutional church."

What would restore our faith in the institutional United Church. Or do we not have those same worries?

What a strange comment!  I wish that priest was available to discuss his renewed faith in the institutional church with us here, in the WC.

Personally speaking I don't actually think that the man that gave the starting spark to Christianity had the intention of creating a faith in church.

It would be nice if we could place our trust in the honesty of Christianity though.  Doesn't work for me but maybe it does for others.

Why would anyone claiming to be of God want to have faith in an institution of man?

What do these statements mean in seculareese?

"She worships the ground he walks on"…

"jesus Christ!"

"I'm in heaven"

"When I got my tax rebate, I saw the light"

"The Leafs got slaughtered again"

"God almighty!"

"That stadium is holy ground"

"I hate to resurrect the idea that…"

"Winning Loto was his salvation"

"Is nothing sacred?"

"I love my iPad"

"I'm dying for a beer"

"After that burger, I lost my faith in McDonalds"

and you wonder what "restoring my faith in the instutional church"might mean? It could mean absolutely anything. Ansolutely any-bloody-old-thing you like.

Just don't get excited. That would be damnable.

Hi crazyheart,

Not knowing exactly what the priest quoted meant there are any number of charitable or less than charitable ways the phrase could spin.

One way, perhaps one of the most common ways that we in the UCCAN might reflect a possible mood of this priest is when institutional votes go our way.  For example, I want the Church to make decision A on issue A and they do.  I am more inclined to attribute that to the Holy Spirit than had the Church gone with decisions B through Z.  I have never heard anyone who lost a vote in the instution (at any level) acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit when a vote has not gone the way they want.  At such times the language used is how the Holy Spirit has been grieved.

As a denomination we do not appear to evidence the maturity of believing God can say no to us and still be God.

So, possibly the priest is relieved because he tends to find himself in agreement with the new Pope on social issues and he expects more votes to go the way he wants them to.

Or,

Maybe the priest is sufficiently mature and discerning enough to know when a good decision has been made.

Time will tell.

Grace and peace to you.

John

And the father's of the church stated that common folk shouldn't know a lot of the stuff they were considering ...

Is this an outside perspective, outlying thought or just all that we don't know as power mongers (sorry MCJah; I'll take the advocates side fore thought, before it dons on the balance) and the population tends toward numbing to why they are mentally and emotionally ill as in sects ... a divine force of androgeny? Perhaps an anachronism, or anna gram as the word comes back at you reverted ... like Hannah ... one we were told was blessed ... a reflective woman?

Didn't Micah (a prophet ear of the other kind; listened to the other side?) say that God was justice, mercy and humble ... as contrary to authority; sublime power ... I recess, or would like too but some say they like me in church for what I provide ... but not my complex thoughts that I hide in weird structure ... those at one citij church as (literary authorites say) I lack form ... like the Shadow ... dark formless void that'll absorb everything and spew non-sense ... and people don't like reason (it's nonsense?) in lieu of emotional power that they prefer over others ... an unclear statement as the only way it can be ... to avoid what isn't in an unreasonable environment!

The beautiful mind is out there as intellect lonely as Christ for no one wished to know the lighter side of the story ... vertiguous in the mental state ... some say thoughts induced in a mortal can induce vert-ego or that green feeling behind the ears ... C-sic? Wait till you encounter the whole thing or part thereof ... as a spark in sects ... conjugation of word?

The perfect reponse to any such situation. The lesson should have been learned with Obama where time may tell would have been better than what was raised to the rafters.

To see change or the promise of change. Seeing an openess to life, and letting go of old ideas and ways of doing things that kill life.

As Pi said in the Life of Pi, "in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go"

Yes, one man and one women can and has. It could be the Pope, or it could be a person living on the street. We all have the potential to restore the faith of another through our words and deeds. We can also kill it.

all thoughts, feelings, faith, belief, come from those who generate them and are their responsibility

belief in a personal deity is one of those things that makes having faith in the personal deity (and from that the institution) easier to maintain (read:  don't have to constantly think aboot it)

that written, it is difficult to be a total iconoclast or to try to maintain behaviours that are different from those around you -- there is a constant drive to conform

and apparently it takes only 10 per cent of a domesticated primate group to have an unshakeable belief in something for that belief to spread to the majority

thus the dangers of the many different dogmas and fundamentalisms that have to always be 'fought'

My faith in the Catholic church would have been restored if they had elected a young, black, african, lesbian woman as Pope. Then there might be a chance that something could change.

A man named Jesus retored people's faith.

Think it is just "special folks"?

Have you ever handed a homeless person on the street a blanket? Have you ever served a hot meal to someone hungry? Have you ever had no place to go, nobody to go to, and been welcomed? Have you ever been a thing to most and then seen as a person by someone? Have you ever had a second chance given to you that you knew you did not earn or even deserve?

Yeah, I would testify that one person can restore faith.

This thread reminded me of this. It is among my favourite songs. I never fail to be moved. I have used it many times. The loud line "the voice of the one crying in the wilderness" would be great as a procession of wilderness people came in.

How many times has your faith been restored? Your hope?

Begs the question, "How many times has it been lost?"

yes

I stand in the Shadow ... merely no place in the realm of power mongers ... but perhaps I was just here to observe such anon-sense ... something I find difficult to grasp ... a' Lass I'm possibly about to release? A buried non-spirit ... dark as a thunderbolt'd thought ...

But somehow when with Roman's people ... do as Romance do ... don't make sense ... write of truth so nun can unravel it ... like no bianca spirit can ... a mere ghost of a chance? Is that close to quantum (wayward wind) IW? You get the drift but other than ARM and ethereal others ... who understands abstract? Its sort of like anti emotion ...  one Lucean thoughts? Eme's freed or just fey ... bewitch'n?

That is if yah care for learn'n, many have no interest on de loan of a restive brae-in ... can't bring it to sentient states ... that is outa here as one man said of holy men speaking to what isn't ... if it speaks back there's a thought about crazy ... varied in tense idee of perspective ... what a spectre when viewed from outside the system. Heiseinburg ... ewe there ... give me a hand ouda dis pithy place ...

Is verse 4 of chapter 2 of the Song of Solomon a'pall'n ...?

A'mere fabrication of cover; thoughts that obscure a wild and passionate power? Such must be restrained as we have learned by observing Caligula, Henry VIII, Napolean, Hitler and Copernicus ... the latter might be in erUr according to the church ... the other side of vite ...

What restores my faith in the UCC?

When they establish an on line discussion forum called WonderCafe

When they accept people from the GLBT community into full membership and participation in my local church

When our doors are opened to welcome and support peeople who come in from various parts of the city and area to receive food vouchers - a program supported entirely by donations by church members

When they listen to me, and my concerns

When they give mee opportunities to serve

When theey bring me into ccloser relationship with the Holy.

When they accept people a wee touched like they've been BUSS'd by greater powers than the isolated self? Thats IÐ ... but could be IC, ICH, IT if you grasp the evololution of tongues to escape what mortal didn't wish to know ... a real curiosity in space ...

A small space that is near a dot or a cursed spot that emotions must be drawn through to spin a myth ... for mortals despise truth ... the field of lies it is said!

is there anything beyond that? The meaning thereof ... that's something else again ... like a realm of intellect?

Go wa' wit cha ...
