Scents, sounds of creation

Tonight, I realized that the catalpa tree in our side yard is just about finished for the season.

When it is full bloom it has a heavy nutmeg-like  scent which fills the house if the wind blows gently.

It tells me that strawberries are ripe for picking.  It reminds me of times sitting under it with friends.

All of this through the scent of the blossom, which lasts for the length of time that strawberries are ready for local harvest.

Creation is amazing.

I wonder if you would share with me the scents and sounds of creation that you encounter this season...in your travels or in your neighbourhood.

I'll try to do the same, to take a moment to stop and just breathe deep of a gift from this planet we call home....or to stop quietly, and listen to the sounds of a creature ..

let's see what wonderfriends discover and share.

Greetings!

As I have been out walking in the early morning or evenings the scent of all the lilac bushes in bloom is all around.  The wild lilies are blooming, butterflies are flittering, watched the birth of many a dragonfly this past weekend and listened to them fly once their wings spread and dried out.

Hope, peace, joy, love . . .

Hi Pinga:

The sweet-scented strawberries in our garden are almost finished (we froze 24 liters already) and we started picking and shelling peas today. I do all of the shelling myself because shelling peas is a meditative excercise that I make the most of. Our sweet cherries are also nearing their end, and the mouth-puckering sour cherries are beginning to ripen. Also beginning are the raspberries. Parsley, dill, leek, garlic, onions, potato blossoms, beets and carrots, radishes and spinach, growing corn and a variety of flowers add their scents and flavours to the melange.

In the evening, when the earth releases the heat that has baked into it during the day, waves of warm wind waft down the valley, carrying the pleasant scent of drying hay and sometimes the less than pleasant scent of pig manure. When the wind comes up from the river, it carries the scent of wet mud. When there is a lull in the farm and garden work, I cut up some windfalls and snowbreaks in our woodlot for firewood, and the scent of freshly cut wood drifts over from our woodshed.

"Sun's comin' up and cakes on the griddle, thank God I'm a country boy!"

I grew up in the desert of Kamloops BC.

I remember the scent of grasshoppers, hundreds of thousands of grasshoppers. It's a slightly spicy/sweet/haybale kind of smell that signals that the hottest weather of the summer is just around the corner

hi pinga:

rain.

the fresh watery scent of  gentle plippity plop, ploppity plip spring  raindrops they wash away the icy remnants of winter while wourishing the leaves of grass and buds of trees;

the heavy, cloying aroma of flowers and gardens and lakes and cottages and city streets that stays  after  torrents travelling on cool winds cut through the heavy heat of summer;

the cold, glassy fragile fragrance that remains after a fall day filled with intermittent showers that raise up the fallen leaves and stir up the the earth and muddy the footsteps of people trying to avoid an autumn rain.

it is very hard to capture the essence of rain, now that i recall the many times in the many seasons i have enjoyed its presence.  it even rained on my wedding day!

thanks, pinga - i have enjoyed writing this, and reading the other posts aswell.

When I took my dog Raffi out for his morning walk, our neighbour was out with her dog Rusty as well. Raffi is a young pomeranian cross. Rusty is an elderly golden lab with heavy arthritis. As soon as Rusty sees Raffi, he turns into a playful pup. Rusty's owner smiles when she sees Rusty play like this, because there is little which brings this old dog much joy these days. A good way to start the day.

Greetings!

The sound of the loon calling in the evening  . . . when out on the water on the weekend we saw many adult loons with their babies, a lot of them having two.  Throughout the day, and in the evenings I could hear the adults calling to one another as they looked after their young, fishing, swimming, diving.

This is more seeing than hearing or smelling, but also when on the water we came across a "stag line" of pelicans all lined up on a rock protruding from the water.  I'm sure if I were close enough I could have heard them speaking to one another.  Several were preening feathers and I'm sure I could have heard that also.  There was a total of 9 of them . . .

Hope, peace, joy, love ...

I have a sight and experience to add. We went to a local music festival on the weekend, and enjoyed the music and visiting involved. The smell of the foods and fresh air filled the air. The clouds cleared away and we left sunburned and happy. On the way home we enjoyed the trip along the Peace River and the gorgeous scenery that entails. We saw three black dots cross the road ahead of us a bit. We realized that it was a bear family, so we looked where we thought they had crossed. We were rewarded with seeing a momma bear and her two small cubs at the side of the road. We all looked at each other a bit until the cub that was a little distance from the other two scampered over to his mother and then the trio scampered off into the woods. This was even more enjoyable because one friend in the car was originally from Zimbabwe. This was her first time along this gorgeous road, and her first time seeing bears.

The smell of the rose bushes - the peonies as I walk to the road - freshly cut grass - they all remind me of the wonders of creation.
