What do you think of spiritual dance? They talk about dancing in the Bible and playing instruments and singing to the Lord. What does this mean to you? Does anyone know of any good churches or groups in the London, Ontario area that offer this sort of thing?

Hey Heidiwholeness
If London doesn't they should!! There is a whole lot of spiritual or liturgical or saced dance in churches in the Ottawa area.Ruth Richardson (Stittsville UC) and Wendy Morel (Bell's Cors. UC) would have all the contacts in your area. You should find some drummers too...dance and drum go together.
Dance on!

Unfortunately, we live in Calgary. We have successfully had visits from a spiritual dance group of teenage girls called the Corps Bara who dance everything from the Lords Prayer to the Benediction. Wow.
We now have some folk in our congregation trying to develop a group that will offer sacred dance (liturgical dance) or drama. Right now they are preparing "hand motions" to one song for the Nov. 15th contemporary worship service. They are advertising no dance or drama experience is necessary. Sounds like a great new way to worship. I will have to desert the traditional heritage service to check them out when they debut. Fortunately our congregation offers us choice.

What it means to me is that we can use our whole selves, body, mind, and spirit, all toghether to pray and praise God. It's really a wonderful experience when it is this. I have unfortunately experienced some dance in church, that was called liturgical dance, that was far from sacred, far from prayer or praise. It seemed to be fun and entertaining, which has its place in our lives of faith. What do you think makes dance sacred or spiritual or liturgical?

Hi!
There is a type of dancing called Sacred Circle Dancing that caters to expressing faith and spirit through dance.
The circle I dance with is in Mississauga, but I am sure there are people in London.
Let me take a looksie ...

Also, a different contact:

All of the dances are taught, every group is different ... so if the first group doesn't feel right, try another one.
They always say "there are no mistakes, only sacred variations".

Isis -- welcome (apologies if you aren't new here and I just haven't seen you).
I like your name.
I loved Sacred Circle dancing and miss it very much since I moved from Waterloo.
The community, music and atmosphere are amazing.
Makes me wish I was "weaving and spinning".

Hi, Heidi -
There is also Sacred Dance group that explores and rehearses at Christ Church Anglican in London. The parish's rector is the group's faciliator.

I have taken a week-long circle dance program (twice) at Naramata Centre. It was wonderful. Unfortunately there is no group in my town.

A description, in case you're curious.
Church basements make wonderful venues. We took up a collection to cover costs. We were also lucky to have dancers who lived in the country, making it possible to dance outside.
Some of my favourites:
Old Woman
Midwives Dance
Misurlu (don't how how it's spelled -- it's a Greek "grapevine" style dance)
Zoroastrian Earth Dance
Palm Tree
Ancient Mother
If you're lucky enough to have a group in your community, I couldn't recommend it enough.
