I'm not sure what you mean by new format Crazyheart?

Anyhow, I have lots of favourite camp and action songs - here's just a few of them (in no particular order):

Linger

Fire's Burning

One Tin Soldier (I first learned it at camp)

Grab Another Hand

I've Got Peace Like A River

Like A Rock (we did this one in church today)

My Hat

Whaddle-e-atcha

It's Not Hard I Tell You So

My Aunt Grete

We're Going to Kentucky

I wear my pink pajamas in the summer when it's hot.
I wear my flannel nighty in the winter when it's not.
And sometimes in the springtime,
And sometimes in the fall,
I jump between the sheets with
NOTHING ON AT ALL!
(chorus)
Glory glory hallelujah
Glory glory what's it to ya.
Glory glory goin' through ya,
With NOTHING ON AT ALL!

One from my mispent youth:

The froggy, him am a queer bird,

He ain't got no tail almost hardly,

When him run, him jump; when him jump him sit down

Where he ain't got no tail almost hardly.

I know how ugly I are,

My face, it ain't like a star,

But I don't mind it, because I'm behind it,

The folks out in front get the jar.

Oh dear Ninjafaery - this thread has hardly got going and already there is a vaiation in versions!

When 'we' sang the Pink Pajama song the chorus was a tad racier...........

Thats the time you ought to see me

repeat

repeat

When I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.

kaythecurler's picture

kaythecurler

image

He jumped from 40,000 feet without a parachute

repeat

repeat

And he ain't gonna jump no more.

Glory, glory, what a horrible way to die

repeat

repeat

And he ain't gonna jump no more.

They scaped him off the runway like a dollop of strawberry jam...................

And on and on and on for many verses, each seeming more outrageous.

That version was taught to me by an 8 year old!

My Hat

Whaddle-e-atcha

It's Not Hard I Tell You So

My Aunt Grete

We're Going to Kentucky

You Must Pass This Shoe

Let's see if I can remember the words to them all!

Linger:

Mm-mm I want to linger,

Mm-mm a little longer,

Mm-mm a little longer here with you.

Mm-mm it's such a perfect night,

Mm-mm it doesn't seem quite right,

Mm-mm that it should be my last with you.

Mm-mm and come September,

Mm-mm I will remember,

Mm-mm my camping days and friendships too.

Mm-mm and as the years go by,

Mm-mm I'll think of you and sigh,

Mm-mm this is good night, but not good bye.

Fire's Burning

Fire's burning, fire's burning,

Draw Nearer, draw nearer,

In the gloaming, in the gloaming,

Come sing and be merry

One Tin Soldier

Listen children to a story that was written long ago,

Bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley folk below,

On the mountain was a treasure, buried deep beneath stone,

And the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own.

Chorus:

Go ahead and hate your neighbour,

Go ahead and cheat a friend,

If you do it in the name of Heaven,

You can justify it in the end,

There won't be any trumpets blowing,

On the judgement day,

On the bloody morning after,

One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill,

Asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill,

Came an answer from the kingdom, with our brothers we will share,

All the riches of our mountain, all the treasure buried there

Now the valley cried with anger, "mount your horses, draw your sword"

And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward,

Now they stood beside the treasure, on the mountain dark and red,

Turned the stone and looked beneath it,

"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Grab Another Hand

Grab another hand, grab the hand next to you,

Grab another hand and sing this song (x2)

Grab another hand, grab the hand next to you,

Grab another hand and sing...

And sing this song: ah la la la la allelujah,

Ah la la la allelujah

ah la la la la allelujah,

Ah la la la la laaaaaa - allelujah

(repeat first part with different actions - my favourites were bump another bum and hug another friend).

I've Got Peace Like a River

I've got peace like a river (x3)

In my soul

I've got peace like a river (X3)

In my soul

I've got joy like a fountain...

I've got love like an ocean..

Actions: peace = peace sign, river = hands together wiggling, joy = exaggerated smile, fountain = fountain-esque pose, love = hands over heart, ocean = surfer pose, soul = stand on one foot and point to bottom of the shoe on the other one.

My Hat

My hat it has 3 corners,

3 corners has my hat,

And had it not 3 corners,

It would not be my hat

Actions:my = point to self, hat = point to head, 3 corners = 3 fingers on one hand while the other points to the elbow

Whaddle-e-atcha

Whaddle-e-atcha, whaddle-e-atcha,

Doodle-e-doo, doodle-e-doo (X2)

It's a simple little song, there's nothing much to it,

All you gotta do is doodle-e-do it,

I like the rest, but the part I like best goes

Doodle-e-doodle-e-doo. DOO!

I'll do the rest later.

Six little ducks that I once knew

Tall ones, short ones, fat ones too

But the one little duck with the feather in the back

He ruled the others with his quack quack quack

Quack quack quack

quack quack quack

He ruled the others with his quack quack quack,

Down to the water they would go

Wibble wobble, wibble wobble to and fro

But the one little duck with the feather in the back

He ruled the others with his quack quack quack

etc

Home from the water they would come

Wibble wobble, wibble wobble, ho and hum

But theone little duck with the feather in the back

etc

The actions for this one seem fairly self explanatory!

It's Not Hard I Tell You So

My Aunt Grete

We're Going to Kentucky

You Must Pass This Shoe

It's Not Hard

It's not hard, I tell you so

Just sing along and go like so.

This is one of those songs that you build on the actions. The first time through, you simply pat your knees. The second time you alternate between patting knees and clapping hands. The third time around it goes: pat, clap, snap. The fourth time it's: pat, pat opposite knees, pat knees again, clap, snap, clap, pat!

My Aunt Grete

My Aunt Grete,

Veeta, veeta, veet,

Had a puss,

Veeta, veeta,  vuss,

And that puss,

Veeta, veeta,  vuss,

Had a tail,

And that tail,

Veeta veeta vail,

Had a curl,

Veeta veeta vurl,

And that curl,

Veeta veeta vurl,

Had a tip,

COMMA!

And that tip,

Veeta veeta vip,

Had a curl,

Veeta veeta vurl,

And that curl,

Veeta veeta vurl,

Had a tail,

And that tail,

Veeta veeta vail,

Had a puss,

Veeta veeta vuss,

And that puss,

Veeta veeta vuss,

Had my Aunt!

Actions: Basically you draw an outline of Aunt Grete and the puss with your fingers, then do similarly with the tail, curl, tip and comma.

We're Going to Kentucky

We're going to Kentucky, (marching in place)

We're going to the fair, (arms up over head)

To meet a senorita, (pose)

With roses in her hair! (point to hair just above ear)

Shake it baby shake it (shake hips)

Shake it if you can,

Shake it like a milkshake, (shake milkshake)

And drink it if you can, (drink milkshake)

Rumble to the bottom (rolling arms down)

Rumble to the top, (rolling arms up)

Turn around and turn around, (spin in place)

Until you have to stop!

Bop she-bop she-bop, (dance)

Bop she-bop,

Turn around and turn around, (spin in place)

Until you have to stop stop stop!

You Must Pass This Shoe

You must pass this shoe,

From me to you,

You must pass this shoe,

And do just what I do!

Actions: everyone takes one shoe off and passes it around the circle - on the beat. On "do just what I do" you tap the shoe in your hand to the right, then left, then right again.

Alice the Camel

Way down the Road

The Other Day

Singing in the rain

You can ride in my little red wagon.

Up in the air junior birdmen

Ging, gang, goolie

Pharaoh, Pharaoh

One tin soldier

He jumped from 40 thousand feet

Quatermaster's store

At a time like this

If God can love turkeys.

I was camp staff for 9 years.  I can't remember the name of every song.  If the tune starts playing I remember the words.

I'm not always thrilled about that.

Grace and peace to you.

All of my favourite have memories attached.

A young girl who each year did the bee stung me song....mmm..i ate him.

A very tall guy with a very bass voice...shouting uot "let me see your boogaloo"....

A wonderful deep-hearted artist writing songs specifically for camp

songs at camp have memories of children, of youth, of parents, of smiles and tears across campfires

On top of spaghetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed
It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled out through the door
It rolled in the garden
And under a bush
And now my poor meatball
Is nothing but mush

Do songs like itsy bitsy spider count, or is that a different grouping?

At our camps it went:

Mabel, Mabel, strong and able,

Get your elbows off the table,

This is not a horses' stable,

But a first class dining table.

Round the mess hall you must go, you must go, you must go,

Round the mess hall you must go,

My fair lady-o

Back again the other way, other way, other way

Back again the other way, my fair lady-o

You must do a song and dance, song and dance, song and dance,

You must do a song and dance, my fair lady-o.

Then, if the person hesitated, the song continued to the tune of O Come Ye Faithful:

Why are we waiting? (x3)

Oh why, why, why?

Why, why, why,

Why are we waiting? (X5)

Oh why? why? why?

here are some of the variations of On Top of Old Smokey

Here's another one, from memory, of one that used to be sung in my neck of the woods (ah, showtunes in elementary school...)

`o/Jesus Christ, superstar, who in the hell do you think you are?

When I die, bury me, hang my balls from a cherry tree

When they're ripe, take a bite and don't blame me if they don't taste right

Just throw them at that g_d dammed tree!\o`

Early in the morning, down by the station

See the little engines, all in a row

See the little drivers pulling on the levers

Shooo, shooo, shooo - and away they go.

Down by the sea,

       Down by the sea.

Where the waterlilies grow

       Where the waterlilies grow

I dare not go,

       I dare not go.

For if I do

       For if I do

My mother will say

       My mother will say

Did you ever see a moose with a front tooth loose

Down by the bay.

(The second last line varies;

Did you ever see a cow with a pink eyebrow

Down by the bay.)

Just imagine what I could have in my memory bank if it wasn't full of campfire songs!  It would be easier to retreive them if my filing system was a bit tidier though.

I know seeler's latest offerings - but with slightly different words.

Anyone know Found a Peanut?  From singing it with grandkids I realised that I know ALL the verses.

Also There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea, another one that goes on 'forever and ever' when you are stuck in the car with kids.

Found a peanut,

Found a peanut, last night . . .

Last night I found a peanut,

Etc, etc. This is one of the ones that goes on and on for several verses, as I remember.

Kaythecurler, I know what you mean about your filing system.

3rd verse is much the same with hot chocolate - and an Easter egg.

oh my... landing in this thread is erasing a pile of years and threatening ear worms for days!

Well the farmer & the maiden were a'courtin' pretty fair

down by the river, never knew that I was there.

Well, the farmer, he was bashful and the maiden, she was shy

and when he asked her if he could, this was her reply:

You can do it if you want to, but you'd better do it right.

you'd better not do it like you did the other night,

cause if you do, I'm telling you, I'll never let you do it again!

~I mean the laundry...

I'll never let you do it again,

~and there was Granny,

swinging from the outhouse door, without her nighty! Baby, could you ask for more?

10 dollars please, and a kiss & a squeeze, and 3 cents ta-a-a-x!

Black socks, they never get dirty, the longer you wear them the stronger they get.

Sometimes, I think I should launder them. Something keeps telling me no no not yet! not yet! not yet!

I ain't gonna grieve, my Lord no more.

Lots more verses.....

Oh you'll never get to heaven on roller skates

'cos you'll roll right past those pearly gates etc

Oh you'll never get to heaven in a Sea Scout boat

'cos a Sea Scout boat won't even float.

The song sheets had 50 songs.  These are some I remember us singing, in no particular order:

Four Strong Winds

Good Old Mountain Dew

Delta Dawn

Ring of Fire

Bobby McGee

I've been working on the Railroad

Oh My Darling Clementine (many, many verses)

When The Saints Go marching in

I'Se the B'ye

Waltzing Matilda

You Are My Sunshine

I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing

I Saw the Light

Looking at the list now, I realize that we should have ended with #50  Wasn't That A Party.
