It snowed some 3" here, enough so that our driveway had to be cleared off of the concrete powder (those who are skiers here will recognize the phrase). The day was cold enough that all the snow on the ground is ICE solid -- must be fun for drivers ;3 And it is snowing again!

There's been enough snow here!  I actually don't mind it too much, as long as roads and sidewalks are clear, but is it ever cold!

Ah Chemgal, one of the reasons for my move. The walk was shovelled for the 4th time this season.   -11 is the coldest first thing in the morningand it warms to -4 or 0 or +2.

Tabitha, I wished you took me with you!  Last I checked, it was -37 with the windchill!

We had a little more snow here last night - in total maybe 0.5cm over the two days - lol (Saturday nights snow had pretty much melted by the time last nights snow arrived so it's hard to know exactly how much we've had). They're talking about more significant amounts later in the week.

Brrr Chemgal! Right now it's only -1 here - with no windchill factor.

I actually tolerated it way better than I thought.  It's been a fairly warm winter up to this point! I think we're lucky, there really isn't too much wind.  I managed to get around without using my scarf and my fingers weren't throbbing like they normally do after being outside for a while at these temperatures.  Usually when it's this cold I have trouble breathing without it, but I hate how your breath makes your eyelashes freeze when you're wearing one!  My outdoor thermometer is saying -26 and according to the weathernetwork the windchill is -38.

London's been flaky this year. We'll get a cm or two, then it warms up and showers which melts it, then it cools off and we get a cm or two, then .... It's more like March than January. OTOH, after the 1.5 to 2.0 m snowbanks of last winter, I can handle this.

We had a big dump of snow in November. That was almost melted up to this week, when all of a sudden the temps dropped on the weekend, and we got a bit more snow. Currently, the actually temperature here is -33 and the wind chill is about -41.

My sympathies to you in the Lower Mainland and Island who are dealing with the snow. wink

Thank you for that heartfelt sentiment Northwind. wink

I always think its' hilarious to see how this city shuts down at the mere thought of snow!

I just got woken up to a phone call from work - don't bother coming in.

Snow Day - WHOO WHOO!

I'm going back to bed.

For what?  Brushing a tiny bit of snow is too much for you guys on the West Coast? ;)

Like I said - our city doesn't do winter - LOL! It shuts down at the mere thought of it!

Who am I to complain? I get an unexpected day off!

Yes, my sister and her husband took the day off because of the snow. They live in Mill Bay and commute into Victoria.

As for me, this cold wouldn't be so bad if there were heat in my office....

That makes sense Northwind. The Malahat Highway (which is a mountain pass), which would they would be travelling can be dangerous on the nicest day of the year. Here it is today:

Yuck. Not to mention it is filled with drivers who do not know snow!

Even here in Southwestern Ontario where we get it by the bucketful in some years, we have those, though in our case I'd suggest it's willful ignorance rather than inexperience. Last week we had a cm or two one morning and the roads were quite slippery. Saw a drip in a Matrix nearly wipe out taking his left too fast and then had a guy race up behind me in his pickup and do a last minute lane change to get around me. Was afraid he'd brake and wipe out into my arse.

Mendalla, about 25 years ago, I drove home along Riverside drive in to Byron. As I was approaching the lights in anticipation of turning left to go over the bridge, some clown came barrelling around the corner and lost control of his vehicle. He came into my lane, and side-swiped my car. He ended up in my lane facing towards London. The police officer was about three cars behind me, so he probably saw the whole thing. It had been snowing all day, and of course, no plows had been around. My poor little 79 Honda was knee deep in snow! I've also seen interesting things along the 401. Not to mention, traffic coming to a complete halt in TO when there is one drop of rain or flake of snow!

I know the exact spot you're talking about and can picture this perfectly. As for the 401, one night I was on my way home from Mississauga. It was raining until just before Woodstock, where it turned into a light squall. The cars slowed down. The f**king semis didn't angry. I ended up pulling off at 53 for a tea so I could destress and call Mrs. M to let her know I'd be late.

That is a scary section of the 401 Mendalla! I was driving westbound somewhere in that area on a day that was rather slippery. You could do 80 kph and not 81. Some clown came up behind me on a curve and ended up flying across the median (grassy then) into the eastbound lane, did a donut, and ended up facing Toronto. Fortunately for him, there was no oncoming traffic, he did not flip, and he could probably carry on from there. I suspect though, that he may have wet his pants or worse. Hopefully it was a good lesson for him.

I hate to derail the thread further, but the worst one I ever saw was actually on 403. I was driving towards Brantford when someone flew across the median from the Woodstock-bound side, went across to the shoulder, slid back across to the median again and finally came to rest there. I was only two cars back in the traffic so it was a close call.

Needless to say, this brought traffic in both directions to a standstill. In the end, I think there were 3-4 cars in the median ditch once I got right up to where it happened so I'm not even sure if that car caused it or was a victim of something bigger and nastier.

Yesterday was so warm I wore a t outside*.  That is, until it got dark, then out came the coat.

Now it is a typical Wet Coast winter:  overcast and raining :3

(the macho military of the US does their winter training here, presumably not because of the MACHO COLD -- that would be more East of me -- but because of the WET n COLD LETHAL COMBO)

Thank you, Japanese current for blessing us with warmth year-round!

(also, I heard a rumour that a funnel cloud was seen recently over Richville on the North Shore...)

* my ideal weather is 6-10 degrees C, overcast with a slight wind.  MMM paradise :3

The alternating winter and spring weather continues. Snow early in the week, melted yesterday, now snowing again today though could turn to showers, then snow flurries for sure over the weekend but temperatures hovering close enough to zero that I suppose it could still flip over into another thaw. As I say, feels more like early-mid March, when it's trying to decide when Spring should start, than late January, when it should quite definitely be winter here. Not complaining, needless to say, but it's weird.

Wyrd here, too. The lake can't decide whether to freeze or not. It's open one day, has a skin over it the next, the holes move around according to the wind. I wish we'd get and keep a decent snow cover. Better insulation for the garden. And we're likely to be dry next summer if we don't get moisture deep down from snow melt.

My neighbour is a retired farmer and contractor who still has some acreage north of here with a sugar bush on it. He says this type of winter isn't great for maple syrup.

No it isn't.  My father made maple syrup up to the time of his death.  As kids we grew up collecting sap and helping out.  Now I observe as my neighbours make syrup, many of them are Amish or Mennonite.

The best maple syrup weather is enough snow to form a protective cover at the base of the trees, sunny, warm days but nights of frost.

Expect there will be a shortage of maple syrup this year.
