cats

We were talking about our crazy cats at work today and I was over in Redhead's group and they were talking about cats taking over the world.  So, I thought it might be time to share our cat stories.

First, I finally broke down and clipped my cats nails this evening.  Someguy was no help at all, he was laughing and saying what cheesie would be twittering to his cat friends on-line.  I tried to distract him with cat nip, but he was having none of it.  I got the bright idea of putting the cat's hind end in one of those canvas shopping bags.  As soon as I got him in, he seemed resigned to his fate and let me clip his nails without even trying to bite me!!!!  Ususally I put the collar on him that we got from the vet when he had a cut on his face, but this worked much, much better.  He did get his nip in the end.  I came out with only one scratch and no bites.

The other thing I would like to share is my husband's wallpaper on his computer.  It is a fluffy white kitten on his hind legs with his forepaws stretched out like he is about to pounce.  In the foreground is the Chicago (I'm pretty sure) skyline.  It is called Catzilla.

Awwww....catzilla!

I love my cat. I just got her recently and have had her for less than a year. She was a rescue.

I clipped her nails for the first time just recently and she was pretty relaxed about letting me do this. I decided to do it primarily because she keeps attacking my feet and it hurts a bit less if she doesn't have the sharpest claws. I don't know how to train her not to do this, but she makes me laugh a lot when she does it too...she sneaks up on them, which is so funny. She sneaks up on her little toys too, as if they are going to get away!

Clipping claws is still really difficult for me, and so my cats aren't used to it either.  mrorange is more resigned than Chloe, but I can't seem to coordinate myself and keep a cat still at the same time. I've cut too deep a couple of times, and that makes me feel terrible.   Chloe is like an eel and will wriggle herself in circles before allowing me to trim her nails.  I have seriously considered having them done at the vet.  I'm definitely going to try the 'shopping bag" maneuver.  Good idea.

I'm moving in a few weeks and have to transport cats.  They get so freaked out with just a small car trip and this one's two hours.  Suggestions?

Catnip. Lots and lots of catnip. Just get them good and stoned for the car ride.

Oh, and maybe some Whiskas Temptations for the munchies.

We got our cat for 5 bucks, allready fixed at the animal shelter. And what a bargain she has been! SHe's all soft and silky, and clouds of hair don't come off her when we pet her. She likes her daily coat glossing (ie daddy stroking) right after our son goes to bed most evenings. It's purr purr purr, flop, roll, purr purr purr. And she's still young so lots of life left in her. She sleeps at my feet every night, and most mornings comes to our pillows to greet us. She likes to snuggle in bed sometimes with us, before the light goes out. I've never had a cat that did that before. She doesn't like to be picked up any other time though. She's not bad at nail clipping, and she only yowls once when we take her in the car. She's an excellent shrew and mouse catcher, even with the bell on her collar.

I hear that most cats do best in a box in the car. We did that with our previous cat. We had no propper kitty caddy so used a cardboard box with holes in it. ALso if the cat sheds a lot in the car, you can make a sweater out of a ladies jersey top sleeve. Cut two holes in it for the cat's front legs and put the head through the cuff. That keeps the hair down.
