When I used to play Role-playing Games, I found out that players (which includes me) are a curious lot. It seemed to be guaranteed that, present the players with a featureless room with just the door they came in and a chest or a lever on the wall and at least ONE of the players will open the chest or pull the lever. I wonder why...
The 'fairy lecture' guy is an author that I thought might set up some sympathetic 'British Isles' vvibes for you. I came across him when I was tooling around with John Mack, the psychiatrist who spent a lot of his professional life studying the alien abduction phenomenon.

Sort of like Dog Vomit fungus?
It is yellow and a 'slime mold'. Harmless but disgusting.
