Do You Dance?

Seeler's "Do you sing?" Forum made me think about other music related items . . .

Do you dance (or have you danced)?

- spontaneously around the house when you hear a certain song (or any song) on the radio, tv, cd player, etc.?

- spontaneously around the house with your partner or another person?

- have your own "happy" dance?

- dance as a means of exercise?

- do you like to dance?

I quite often "burst out in dance" when I hear certain music playing at home.

My sweety and I have never spontaneously danced at home, nor planned danced, either - he is not a dancer at all.

I don't have a happy dance.

I have often put on music and danced for exercise.

I like to dance, but not good at old-time dancing.

I have fond memories of my dad getting my mom up to dance at home when he would hear songs on the radio.

Yep.  Chemguy isn't really into spontaneous dancing with me.  He'd rather just watch and laugh most of the time.

I've done various forms and have taught some too.

What's old-time dancing?

Chemguy and I have danced, he took a set of classes I co-taught.  He came out to a few socials, but the expectation was that you dance with everyone and he's the type that would have been more into it if you tended to stick with the person you came with.

What I mean by old-time dancing are dances like the two-step, fox trot, old time waltzes.  I just was never very good at that kind of dancing - I guess I don't have very good co-ordination and rhythm.  I remember my dad trying to teach me these dances and I just didn't get it.

30 years experience as a Highland dancer...1 yr of ballet...2 years of Irish dancing.  I love ballroom and western dancing (the old-time mentioned above) just don't have anyone to dance with.  Haven't done much dancing lately.  If I hear a great song on the radio or am really happy, I will spontaneously do a quick Highland Fling. smiley

I walked into the library and all the librarians said "We saw you and Crazydad dancing." Whoa!. We were invited to a wedding ( a friend of my son and we were friends of the family). Unknown to us. Crazydad and I were jiving and when we stopped we were surrounded by all the kids and they had  videotaped it.Thats how the librarians saw IT. The mother of the groom was a libraran.

No breath to dance these days.

I'll be dancing this Friday!  Going out to hear a couple of great live blues bands - can't sit still much when that music is on.  I'm not a good dancer, and I'm often self-conscious - but I do go dancing occasionally.

In a couple of weeks there's a concert/dance at our church - Big Band & Swing Dance music -  fundraiser for the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra who will be playing, with some proceeds also to our church.  There will be a dancefloor - and I'm hoping there will be some swing dancers & 'oldies' to watch!   I grew up listening to my folks playing lots of that music in our home - mom dancing about the kitchen in her skirt, sweater set & pearls while getting dinner ready or doing the dishes.  Happy memories for me.

My daughter is a great dancer.  She took bits & pieces of lessons along the way, but mostly is just moved by the music & has that lithe dancer's body.  I loved the liturgical dances she would often do at church when she was a teen - so moving.

Hey BethAnn - are there any dance clubs/groups in your area?  I have a colleague who's a member at a 'studio' where she sometimes takes lessons, sometimes just goes to their social dancing events.  She likes it because she's also single & it's not a 'pick up' event - people are there because they love dancing.

I've never seen liturgical dance, does she still dance?

She does still dance - with friends, for fun and recreation now.  She has an amazing musical ear - I wish I had fraction of her talent!

Liturgical dance is extraordinary when well done!

...my spouse and I kitchen dance smiley....

Just there in the kitchen ... for no particular reason .....

A song will be playing on the radio sometimes and we take that little moment and enjoy a little dance...

Sometimes with no music playing I would hug my spouse and start to dance...  She would say she didn't hear any music and I would tell her it was in my head.  She would laugh and dance anyways...

Our kids used to groan an moan smiley ... but now that they are married .... they do it sometimes too...

...oh smiley ...we still dance....

Hugs

I haven't done any formal dancing in years, and actually don't like pair dancing all that much. But I dance by myself when I feel particularly ecstatic. Also, I've done some Sufi dancing, which is dancing yourself into trance.

I wasn't going to go to the conference finale night, and then decided to go.  Turned out there was a band, and well, though my group was kinda just sitting, one of the directors and another lovely woman spotted a guy standing on the sideline who was dying to dance, and so through that, got me up with them as they went to get him on the floor.   I think we all ended up dancing the night away, including two of the other guys..and then another group.  The floor was packed, it was a great band.  (This is the conference in San Francisco where 90% of the participants were male).  We danced in circles, and in random groups.  What fun.

I love to dance, but have become self concious as my body does not move as it once did.

My husband does not like to dance.

My dad loved to dance with my Mom, and they would do lovely dancing around the floor...he is a good lead, she a good follower, and would make people smile as he hummed and danced.

My favourite cousin, who has long past, used to amaze me with her & her husband's jiving.  Their relationship showed in their dance.

I do mostly 30s-40s style, some 20s.  Not as old as waltz :)

I would like to learn ballroom, I know a bit.  The ballroom swing style is looked down upon by many swing dancers though and TBH I don't have a huge desire to learn 'the jive' as it is often mockingly called.  Most ballroom classes touch on everything from what I've seen.

Yes, in the Mavlavi Order of Sufism, also known as the "Dancing Dervishes", it is a spiritual discipline. But anyone can try it all by themselves. It involves getting the body aligned into a vertical axis, and twirling around the axis. That way one doesn't get dizzy, but gradually dances oneself into a trance.

I'm not super familiar with either, but I have heard of contra dancers describe it as being hypnotic or trance like too.

I took ballet for many years as a kid/youth, but as my body began to change... I was less and less well suited for it.

These days I like to dance socially (at weddings, bars, parties, etc.).  I can easily spend a whole night on the dance floor.  I like to move and sing along and laugh.

I often pull out my version of the "Elaine Benes" dance that always makes people laugh.  I just saw that episode of Seinfeld again the other day.  What fun!

I had a friend who loved to drag me around the floor to big band music at a ball hosted at the hotel where we worked.  I don't know any formal dances, but he was such a good lead that we could just twirl and laugh.  He made me feel confident.

Not musical; not a great dancer.  But like singing, it is something I believe I could enjoy.  But I married a man who isn't into dancing.

That is, we didn't dance much until last year when we took up square dancing.  We both are getting quite a kick out of it.

I don't dance alone - oh, maybe a few steps when singing as I do my household chores.    My jump when I score a strike at bowling is more spontaneous enthusiam than a happy dance.

My granddaughter has a passion for dance.  She has studied it since she was three and dances about four times a week - or more.

My love of dancing and ability seems to have come from Dad's side of the family - in the 50s and 60s (maybe even before), they'd get together and have family barn dances every Friday and Saturday night.  Before he was married, Dad belonged to 2 different square dance clubs (one was where he met mom) and a ballroom dance club and he danced 5 nights a week.  Didn't dance as much after he married mom as she isn't really a dancer.

I have been dancing more with my 3 yr old niece this week as we've been listening to some perky music.  Also starting to teach her some basic Highland dance steps.

oh my gosh - family barn dances - now THAT sounds like a lot of fun!!

I enjoyed square dancing when we did it in school phys ed class ... but I don't think I've done it since then!    Seeler - do you have one of the big crinoline skirts?

seeler's picture

My sister has square danced for years.  When I told her I was taking classes she gathered up some skirts, cordinating peasant blouses, and crinolines and brought them to me.  So yes, I do have the big crinoline skirts.  I don't always wear them at our regular dances - but I feel better on the dance floor with a skirt than in slacks.

King David danced - although when I was young a Baptist neighbour explained to me that it was probably just a few steps - and more like skipping along than actually dancing.

And I tend to wonder about that wedding where Jesus changed water to wine.  It's hard to imagine a wedding where people drank wine but didn't dance - but maybe Jesus just sat off to the side and sipped a cool one.

 (just teasing, Jae.)

Anyone do Salsa dancing?

chemgal's picture

I've done a few classes.  The real trick to learn many of those dances is to go out dancing, and not just sticking to the classes.  I think I only did that twice and it wasn't just a place done by one or two groups but more of a salsa bar, so I pretty much stuck with the small group.  An instructor from another group asked me to dance which was nice.
