Do you wear crosses etc.?

Do you wear Christian or other religious symbols in your ears , around your neck , wrist or ankle or tie clips?

I have lots - earrings , necklaces  and wore them lots but I don't any more. It doesn't feel right to wear the symbols. What about you?

I dont mind them at all.....

Yes I do wear them from time to time....

I dont mind people seeing the symbol that I happen to be a Christian.

And in turn it does not bother me at all to see people wearing symbols of their particular beliefs.

Just wear them with good taste as one would any other jewelry.....

I wear a small gold cross on a necklace (common in the Orthodox church). It's not terribly conspicuous. About as conspicuous as I would wear, I think. I'm not judgmental about other people's religious adornments, either.

No, I don't wear a cross but I have often thought about it. I would wear a small plain one on a chain.

I don't like cross earrings ... not really sure why.

I wear a cross all the time.  Under my shirt.  When leading worship I have a pewter Celtic Cross I wear

I have a cross that I haven't worn for years.  An ex-boyfriend bought it for me, so that's probably part of the reason.

I used to wear a cross.  It got caught in a blanket one night and when I rolled over I almost garroted myself.  I gave up wearing them about that time.

I don't own any cross jewellery. I have nothing against it, it's just not a look I choose for myself.

I own a small gold cross on a fine chain.  It was given to me when I was a very little bridesmaid.  I rarely wear it - but I rarely wear any jewelry.

I wear my little pentacle with the celtic knot work all the time - literally I never take it off waking or sleeping except for things like x-rays. It's about the size of a nickle or maybe a tad smaller.  At work I usually keep it under my clothing but otherwise it's in plain sight.  I don't care for pentacle-ish earrings or finger-rings though.

I have a Jesus fish attached to my work POS key card. I don't wear a cross, because I don't have one to wear. If one were donated to me id wear it. It doesn't bother me when people wear items which identify them with their religion. Its nice to see in this day and age.

there was this one chick i knew, really hilarious self-identified Christian who wore a cross that was chipped so that it could d/l sounds and music from the net and so she had a variety of sounds...

She was a fan of Monty Python, so you can imagine some of the sounds :3

Wow Inanna - this is truly amazing.  I have never heard of such a thing as a young chlcken that could self identify as a Christian.  Neither have I ever seen a young chilcken weraing a cross, or any other type of jewelry.  You seem to live ina different place from me!!

I brought this up again because I got the most interesting, I think, quite pretty and unique bracelet from my husband for my birthday. It's kind of kitchy chic to me. More religious for someone else who is more traditional (so I also don't want to offend anyone by wearing something that has personal but not as much religious meaning for me if anyone asks). Mostly, I like it because he put some time and thought into it before he bought it and it's from the heart. He got it from a small local stand, actually, that carries imported jewelry I like. It's handmade (the bracelet itself is, not sure about the beads/ charms) with small linked stones or charms that each have a tiny religious symbol on it like a classical painting. Quite Catholic symbolism: a Mary painting, maybe a couple of Marys, some classical angels, Jesus Mary and Joseph, Moses (I'm guessing- some older Bible character) and one of Jesus on the cross. He bought it because he knows I have taken up an interest in theology and religious history and have been more interested in learning about the Catholic church since the new Pope was elected. And also, he's from a place where seeing the old icons around is common. I am not thinking of changing denominations, just paying more attention. It's not something I would normally buy just because I never have worn those symbols. But he was so sweet to get it- he even bought me a magnifying glass to see the pictures. He's funny! You can't tell what they are unless you look closely- it just looks like coloured patterns on charms. How about you? Do you feel comfortable wearing anything not of your religion/ denomination. I have First Nations jewelry, which is more abstract. I wouldn't know what all the symbols are without reading about them, whereas, these are more obvious (although less visible because they're tiny). I'm not linking this to what's happening in Quebec, btw, just personally.

Recently I've been wearing my rainbow earrings.  They are beautiful and have symbolic meaning for me - solidarity with and love for the GLBT community.

I think of it as having a spiritual meaning for me.
/
Interestingly, back in the 70s, I had a charm bracelet - the type with dangling charms. All my friends were wearing them. Charms represented places I visited, my interests, my children, my dog. It didn't have any special religious meaning for me.
It had gone out of style and was packed away in the bottom of a draw (I still have it.) when a friend persuaded me to attend an ALPHA course with her. One whole session was taken up with the evils of witchcraft, ouiji boards and charm bracelets. I was told then that those cute little dangles were strait from the Devil himself - that wearing them meant that I was looking to him for protection (a charmed life, or whatever) rather than putting my trust in God. I never took much of the ALPHA course seriously.

That would dissuade me from the course, too, seeler. Did you have to pay for it and buy the book?

I never knew that charm bracelets themselves were considered evil, just because they are charm bracelets. Well, you learn something everyday! ;) I have one that I got as a child with charms from relatives' travels. So people wearing those are evil too, huh? Sheesh. I did not know that when my relatives gave me that when I was 7 or 8 that was evil of them and I was evil to put it on then. That little dutch shoe and tea cup and palm tree- terrible (actually I don't remember all the charms on it. My mom kept it for me) ;) There's no pleasing everybody, I guess. This is what I mean. The symbols themselves (religious ones that is- the old charm bracelet never crossed my mind) which are pretty beads and metal can get people so irrationally emotionally charged I have mostly avoided wearing them, because they may not take the time to understand why I might wear them. Which can cause unnecessary rifts- which I see no point in causing. If people could just look at the symbols the way they look at flowers, and say "that's nice" that would be a different story. My husband gave me the bracelet thinking about pleasing me, and to me, it was a nice thing to do. If I ever lose the bracelet I won't lose the memory of him giving me the bracelet- which is why it's meaningful for me. He didn't realize, I don't think, that I would give this so much thought. It's a bracelet.

I believe I have a UU chalice lapel pin around but I have no idea where it is at present and I have certainly never worn it on a regular basis.

I have a crucifix that my Godmother gave me when I was baptised (I was 19), it's small and in my opinion, quite elegant. Fortunately, no one pays attention to it, but apparently I forgot to take it off for my boyfriend's family's Rosh Hashannah. His grandmother wasn't too happy, but frankly she is rarely amused by much.

Out of curiousity, where do you buy your religious symbols? They acutally sell them at stores like Forever 21, but that seems a tad tacky for me.

Me? My husband got it at an independent imported craft stand, a lot of things there are from Mexico (I have to shorten my posts and learn to use fewer words. I just edited a redundant long babbling paragraph). It's not junk jewelry from a retail store. It's not expensive either. It might be one of a kind or one of a few similar. I saw earrings there done in the same style, with tiny pressed flowers instead of religious symbols. I generally like artisan/craft jewelry more than "fine" jewelry.

My rainbow earrings came from Ten Thousand Villages.

/
My large cross (that I wear for lay ministry) was made by a local pewter craftsman - limited number designed especially for graduates of the Fredericton Institute for Christian Studies.
/
My United Church crest pin came from the UCC bookstore.
/
My charm bracelet (apparently has some connection, that I can't grasp, to Satan worship) came from mall jewellery stores.
/
And the Jesus fish on the back of my car came from the Lighthouse (a Christian book store).

One of my pentacle pendants came from  a local pagan shop but I actually think they are more-or-less mass produced.  The other two I ordered online because none of the local shops carried anything like what I was looking for.

I also have a lovely etched copper-and-enamel leaf pendant I consider very earth-witchy that I picked up from a local craft-person. That one I know was hand made and if not one of a kind was certainly one of a limited number made.  I plan to keep the fellow's info just in case I ever need anything like that custom made because he and his wife do incredible work.

Since I last posted on this topic I have stopped wearing a pentacle day-in and day-out mainly because the slip-ring on the one I used to wear broke one day while I was out shopping and I lost the pendant. It took me ages to find a replacement that I liked.  Now I tend to rotate my jewelry more.  I've been wearing my amber stuff a lot of late.

I own, but do not wear, a very small gold cross.  It was a gift given when I was a bridesmaid.  Actually, I would like to wear it (for sentimental reasons) but it needs such a fine chain that it kept breaking.  It isn't something I would like to lose!

I have a white gold cross that I wear only during lent.  I got it at a jewellery store in the mall with my birthday money as a teen.

I wish that I had a four point star to wear throughout Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, but I have yet to find one that I like.  I currently wear a Star of David instead which always prompts A LOT of people to ask if I am Jewish.  I think it's a great conversation starter.

My gold cross was a gift also . . . the last Christmas gift I got from my dad 28 years ago.  It was his last Christmas.  He actually gave me the money to pick it out as he was too ill to shop for it.

Strangely enough I have a lot of people ask me if I'm Jewish because of my Pentacle. Go figure lol

I have so much religious jewelry. I did not buy any of it. I have among the necklaces my father's Mogen David, oodles of crosses (glass and metal), vintage medals, even a few that are The Tree of Life. I also own too many lapel pins, one Hallmark one was given to me when I was baptized and I have the UCC crest pin. The most meaningful pieces are my father's Mogen David and a lapel pin that is a cross of nails. It was given to me by a friend in her 80's. It was her father's and he wore it when he preached.
