Felt the house shake in Toronto.  For only about 3 or 4 seconds.  Just enough time to run outside and then it was done.

My dear friend who lives in Ontario (Burlington) hated living on Vancouver Island because she was frightened of earthquakes. Never, in the whole time she lived there was there never even so much as a slight tremor -- I hope she's OK today.

It was a roar through the house and a few chairs moved on the madawaska river - west of Ottawa - lasted about 20 seconds...  I did not move it was over so fast - and no after shocks - I lived in LA so know about the 'real' quakes...

See what happens when I leave Ottawa.   The last earth quake twenty years ago also happened when I was away in PEI.

All I felt in PEI was the warm sand under my feet and the the rumble coming from the oceans waves.

I was working in the shop next to my garage when I felt the tremor.  Some tools rattled on the shelf and my work bench shook.  The dog looked at me curiously.... it was over in seconds.

I've experienced earth tremors before, so wasn't surprised.

I was driving to Lindsay, Ontario, and did not notice it in the car.  I heard about it on the radio, and called my wife in Toronto to make sure she survived it.

Flipping radio stations, one talk radio hostess was interviewing someone from the Geological Survey of Canada, asking him about likely casualties.  From what?   Broken plates falling from unstable china cabinets?  She then asked about "aftershocks" and how likely casualties would be.  She so desperately wanted to report or even predict casualties.

Earthquake?

Damn!

Here I was thinking it might just be nature reacting to Harper announcing his resignation.

lol - and S. Ontario also has a severe weather warning including possible tornados...

tornados & earthquakes in one day!??  that would be an ominous thing as the G8G20 gets going!!

I was at my desk in Mississauga (Hi Aotn!!) and it shook for at least 20-30 seconds, my daughter felt it too - it was enough that I went from my office to the library room, puzzled but pretty sure I knew it was an earthquake.  Very cool, in  my experience.

This was my first earthquake, but on October 14, 1982, I was living in Etobicoke when a group called Direct Action bombed Litton Industries in Toronto. Something shook the house and awakened me.  I asked my wife what that was, and she said it was just an explosion, go back to sleep.  The next morning, she didn't remember anything about it.  It was weird.  The first and only time I've ever been 'bombed'.  Really, I don't drink.

Is there a connection between this and Chatham-Kent being named the 'Boardwalk' of the Canadian Monopoly game?  (Where the heck is Chatham-Kent anyway?)

I was going to make a crack about 'making whoopie' when the earthquake hit, but I promised myself I'd behave this time around.  Me and my dumb promises.

Thanks for the query post. I was work when the quake hit, loading bottles of pop into the coke and pepsi fridges in preparation for the big G-20. I felt nada, and didn't even know it had happened until told by our chef.

I was in my hospital office, 5th floor, just on the west edge of Toronto, talking with a patient.  He lifted his hand from his lap, started moving it about & said "but it's shaking".  I replied ... "well, yes, sometimes your medications can cause some shakieness".  To which he replied with wide eyes - "Not my hand, the floor!!"  Indeed it was moving in a minor and very unusal way!!  It was an odd sensation, and he was very relieved that I felt it too!   He was somewhat unsettled though & decided he'd end the session a bit early!!

Others at work had a moment of wondering if their vertigo was acting up, & one person thought maybe she was having a stroke!

Absolutely no damage - the lights didn't go off, nothing really happened as a result - but good stories!!

It lasted about 30 seconds here in Owen Sound. The epicentre is up the Gatineau near Gracefield. That's the Alwyn pastoral charge. The Wakefield PC is further south. There is some serious building damage and bridges down.

I don't know if I felt it or not.  I had 20+ kids in my class moving desks and chairs.

Sending an email. House shook a bit, as did my chair. Never felt an earthquake before. Kind of cool, in a freaky sort of way. I am going to make t-shirts:

I SURVIVED THE WINONA EARTHQUAKE-06/23/2010

I'm in Chicago right now working on a DMin degree, but it was a bit of a shock to check out the Canadian news on the internet and discover the earthquake! For what it's worth we had tornado warning sirens going off in the Windy City tonight!

I was in the cafeteria having a late lunch.

People came in from outside, and said...guys...what are you doing, did you feel it.

Turned out those on the 2nd floor left the building quite shook up, as the building was "moving".  Depending on how  abuilding is constructed it picks up like a wave..if something drops or shifts.   They were quite concerned.

We bugged them a bit, that it would have been nicer had they told us on the way out.

My co-ops were quite  bummed out that they hadn't experienced it...as normally we would have been sitting upstairs.

I was once in Pleasanton, California when one hit.  The training instructor just stopped for  a second...The guy next door headed for the doorway.  I just felt a bit dizzy...from the room/monitor moving.

I've heard several comments that people were concerned it had something to do with the G20...I was on the phone with someone in Ontario when it hit, that's how I heard about it so soon.

I was at work and felt the building shaking.  It was a strange sensation.  My office is on the fifth floor of the hospital.  People working on the ground floor told us they didn't feel a thing.

The Canadian version is somewhere between London and Windsor.  Actually, I was born and raised in Chatham-Kent, but we say that with a whisper.  Also born there was Fergie Jenkins, Sylvia Tyson, Shae Lynn Bourne, and the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers Doug (I forget his last name), and a few others including some NHL players, etc.  The rest of Canada thinks we speak with an American accent (even in Toronto) and the Americans know we're Canadians because we say 'eh' a lot.  The Battle of the Thames in the War of 1812-1814 was fought near there so if it wasn't for Chatham-Kent and Chief Tecumseh (who is still revered in the area) you might all be speaking American right now.

Hi Motheroffive,

Motheroffive wrote:

Well, since the only thing it shook in my immediate vicinity was my armchair which the dog was lying behind, I thought the dog was goofing off.

I told her to lie down and knock it off.

Then she came down stairs all happy to be getting attention.

Grace and peace to you.

John

I remember one night at bedtime my two pet birds became very 'alert'.  Stretched up really tall, crests way forward and eyes bugging out.  I didn't know why but learned the next morning there was a tremor. I personally didn't feel it. Must have been a 2- point -something.

A facebook friend of mine that lives in TO posted this as his status:

It's just like Toronto to claim an earthquake that happened 500km away as their own...
