Editing Posts

There's a few people who constantly edit there posts.

Some do it to add a bit to a post, or to edit grammar or spelling.  They tend to do it only for newer posts.  Not really an issue, although I do find it a little irritating for 'x new' posts to show up on a forum when the content is the same.  I do this at times, although I try to write things correctly the first time so I don't have to go back.  If it's a minor mistake it bugs me, but if there's at least one post after mine I try to ignore it.

Then there are the posters who alter or delete older posts.  Also frustrating, but usually they just don't feel comfortable leaving certain information up there.  My feeling is that this isn't a chat room, it's a message board.  They have the right to do so though.

Why I find these behavious slightly annoying, I have respect for some of the repeat offenders of the above that I have noticed.  The slight frustration I experience is my problem, not the editor's problem.

More disruptive to discussions are those who delete or alter posts to manipulate discussions.  I have little tolerance for this behaviour and find I tend to not engage with these posters.  I've heard others voice their frustration with these posters.

I've heard that if someone quotes a post, the post cannot be edited.  If someone only quotes some of the post, can the rest still be edited?  What about replying to a post?

Should more be done?  In some ways I enjoyed the change so that we could not edit OPs.  It drives me nuts if I made a spelling mistake in the title though!

On another message board I use, there's a time limit to edit posts.  Would doing that here benefit WC?

I'm a chronic editor. Usually just for spelling and grammar. Sometimes because a thought isn't complete or because it doesn't convey the thought as I wanted to, and I think "No. That doesn't sound quite right. It's not what I wanted to get across or how I wanted to get it across" I'll pay mor attention now that I know people are bothered by it.

It bothers me.

Sometimes I will do it for a glaring error right after I posted.

Sometimes I will do it when people are misreading a post due to my poor logic.  I will in those cases put a clear "edit:  added xyz to clarify" or, "edit;  i misled people in the post, and so let me clarify......"...or such type of  spelled out edits.

I haven't noticed that to be the case.  Although I do not tend to go back to older posts to edit them.  If I have made an error, such as attibuting a quote to the wrong member, I will try to go back and fix that.  When I can no longer access a post to edit it I will ask Admin for help.

Maybe somebody should quote this post and I'll see if the edit option is still available.

To be honest, while there is some editting going on and fixing of typos that is minor.

And yes, there is a poster who makes huge sweeping edits.  I don't believe that this is done in an attempt to altar or manipulate discussion.  I believe it is done in the heat of the moment.

Grace and peace to you.

Thanks Kimmio, I would appreciate it if you edited a little less, but as I said, it's my issue.  If you feel the need to continue editing, go ahead.  It's a good lesson in patience for me :)

Pinga, I agree.  If I'm making changes to content in a post that's been up for a whlie I try to remember to make it clear that it was edited.

OK, RevJohn, edit away....

I mostly use it just after posting something, when I note a misspelled worfd or such.  I need a preefrooder, I guess.  But I tend to leave alone something that's been there awhile, even if I later notice an oops or two.

So, in summary, to block someone from being able to edit their post, just use the reply or quote functionality when responding.

Exactly.

I do this all the time.  Stephen recently pulled a fast one and completely re-wrote a post I replied to without hitting "Reply", but I've learned to almost always lock the post I'm replying to.

Kimmio doesn't like it, but I mostly "Reply" to her out of habit, not specifically to lock her out.  She mostly just re-words or adds little bits.  She isn't an author - she's an editor.

i dont read peoples post and edit accordingly to maniupulate.

i do edit my posts for many reasons.

sometimes typos.

sometimes repeatative things.

sometimes i add something i feel is more appropraite.

sometimes i may even post scripture and decide to replace some with another

i dont read responses and go back and edit to the purpose of manipulating a convo for appearances of some kind.

I'll sometimes post and then edit right away because I have more to say to correct typos. Rarely go back and edit an older post and then only if there's an egregious error in it. If I want to add to what I said, I'd quote myself and go from there.

StephenBooth, sorry I did come to that conclusion unfairly.  I appreciate your clarification as well as revjohn's insight.  I do tend to skim many of your posts, see mass amounts of edited posts and have seen others become frustrated with your editing so that's what I assumed.

There have been other times where I have thought posters did it to be manipulative.  Maybe they were, maybe they weren't.  Luckily, it's a small minority of all the posts!

I WON'T edit it...but my last post  probably doesn't make sense because I was replying to chansen's previous post referring  to me, thinking that the reply function would pick up his post but it didn't. In the meantime, a few others posted ahead of me.

To clarify, my  last post was an admittance that I am an editor not an author, and I seem to have a bit of an OCD editting problem.  It's the perfectionist in me.

I have no problems with people editing to correct spelling and/or grammatical errors - I've certainly done that myself.

My only problem comes when something is changed significantly (meaning more than simple spelling or grammatical changes) after people have already replied to the post.

I edit to correct errors, and do so pretty much immediately once I post it and read it and find them.

Ooohh.....love this.......I love that hitting reply stops the editting. I am not so concerned about Kimmio's edits, because I know she is polishing. Others on the otherhand.......

I only edit pretty much immediately after I have posted. I will read the post and see a dumb error, or something that doesn't make sense and fix it. Perhaps that is my OCD coming out. It doesn't show up often, except in matters of writing.

The "new" showing up has driven me crazy a few times... when I have been especially interested in a conversation and have been following it closely.

I don't think this is obsessive at all :)

I do a few edits to my posts ... usually right away. I like the Spell check function and always use it when my posts are more than a line or two.

Ah, typing courses... I remember taking a 9 week course in grade 7 (required of all students).  The first day of the course  we learned to do something like this:

ffff jjjj ffff jjjj fjfjfjfj

I think that was the first, and last, thing I actually did right in that course.  I have long since discovered that the two finger system I use works much better for me.

paradox3's picture

paradox3

Hi Redbaron,

Oh yes, the typing course in grade 7. We had it for the whole year. I came out of it able to place my fingers correctly on the keys but I always needed to look at them. My high school and university papers were typed this way on an old manual typewriter.

When I picked up Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing (many years later), I was happy to discover that my fingers remembered the home row. Mavis helped me to learn the keyboard better and to pick up my speed.

I no longer need to look at the keyboard unless I want the keys in the center of the top row.  By the time Mavis wanted to teach me the top row, I was happy with my progress and I packed her away.

My accuracy could use some improvement, however. Thank goodness for Spell Check.
