I am putting this question in social because I don't know where else to put it.Tonight I was greylisted for about the third or fourth time in a month or two. I can't imagine it is something I have done to deserve this, so I wonder about gremlins.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

nope, never happened.
who is your internet provider.
Reach out to them and ask them if they have wondercafe on a list.

I don't even know what greylisting is.

Like Seeler, I don't really know about greylisting. So, I looked it up. It's an email/spam thing ... which surprised me because I thought it must have something to do with rubbing someone the wrong way on a forum like Wondercafe. From what I read it has to do with the ISP. My question on this for Northwind is how did you know you were greylisted?

I get it pretty often. Never(I think) at home, but when I check in to WC on my phone or ipad from other locations. It is WC specific.

I got a message from WC. It might only happen when I'm using my mobility account. I've had this account since 2001 or so and I believe I've accessed WC from it over the last few years. It seems odd to me that it would be happening now. It is a good theory though.

How do you know that wondercafe is who is sending you the message
Generally it is a service provider putting up a message when you go to a grey listed site. Www.wondercafe.ca may be grey listed. Isp's subscribe to lists. Shucks i know of large org that got listed

Posted on: 03/24/2014 09:30
yes, you get the two boxes. enter something here, leave this one blank. I used to try to type in excuses for why I though I might be getting greylisted, as if somebody was reading it and would OK or not. Now I just type Hi and i'm in.

It is a WC page.

Can you help me to understand what makes it a wondercafe page?

It ha sthe WC look. I think it's the blue background, not orange. But it's some sort of security shield.

If I took this machine to starbucks right now and tried to log on, I'd probably get it.

I'm guessing WC tracks where you logged on from last, and ig it doesn't match - you jump through the hoop
chansen
Posted on: 03/24/2014 09:44
Hopping providers doesn't do it. I know I got the greylisted message often when Bell was my ISP. Nothing on Rogers or my small rural ISP.

Posted on: 03/24/2014 09:44
I log on from multiple places globally and have never had it
If you get it, can you send me a screen capture. I am curious
chemgal
Posted on: 03/24/2014 09:47
Yeah, it's a WC page. It's been a while since it's happened to me, but it only happens when trying to access WC, and the little box that asks for you to type a reason to be whitelisted looks pretty similar to WCs comment box.
chemgal
Posted on: 03/24/2014 09:50
It is an easy fix though, just type something into the box and you're back in.

Understood, chemgal
The reason that I have for asking is that gray listing is done for security concerns
It could have been a shoddy deliverables to block stephenbooth, and so only impacting some of you from the west?
Teaching people to put something into a prompt with no gyidance us just bad

It is most definitely a WC page as others have mentioned. It looks like a WC comment box with all the trimmings (profile, discussions etc) above and around it. Mine is orange. I agree, it lame that anything can be entered into the box and you get whitelisted "for this session". It is also poor that there is no feedback or apparent action from admins.

Northwind, I mentioned I would check into it and I did, but couldn't find anything from our side. If you want to send us a screen shot of the comment box you describe above and your Internet provider, we continue to look into it. We definitely aren't the ones presenting any box asking why you should be whitelisted.

lol Of course, when I try it out wanting it to happen, it doesn't work.

Aaron, that makes sense.
I wonder if it is one of the ISP's that provides service to restaurants and public wifi zones?
chemgal
Posted on: 03/24/2014 11:38
It happens when I use an internet stick, so it's not public wifi. I think it also happened the first time I tried to access the site after moving.

Except Stephenbooth is from [REDACTED BY WONDERCAFE ADMIN] area and a geographic block would likely nab folk in Ontario rather than Alberta.
Grace and peace to you.

That's almost exactly what it looks like. Again, I was getting this message on my Bell blackberry a couple of years ago. Drupal seems to have some IPs greylisted as potential bots. Because IPs are dynamic, it probably isn't you, but someone who once had that IP was unknowingly part of a DDoS attack. All the page asks you to do is enter any text to show you're not a bot, and they allow your login attempt.

Unless Drupal is on my BlackBerry phone or my Samsung tablet, I don't have it. I of course could be wrong. I am not even sure what Drupal is.
I am willing to acknowledge that is is an ISP thing. I have not used an Internet cafe. If it is not a WC thing, why is the WC site info coming up?
chemgal
Posted on: 03/24/2014 12:54
Drupal is what WC is on.
chansen

Drupal is the software that powers WC. It has nothing to do with your device.

Can someone use this to hack into your account? Or your device? The other night this happened to me: I was grey listed which has happened before and so I didn't think much of it. I assumed it was some sort of protection for WC. It looks like a WC page. I typed something in like 'don't know', the system let me in. I think it was the same night, though, that I was logged off and had to log back in. I would forward to a page and new posts were showing so it looked like I was still logged in- but from the login page I was logged out?? It was weird but I thought it was some kind of glitch, maybe my phone, or maybe some security measure, so I logged out and back in again. I reset my password just to be safer. I had another incident I spoke to Aaron about when I was denied access to my account somehow and he got me back in. I am worried about hacking because I stay logged in most of the time. Probably shouldn't.

My guess is that StephenBooth or someone else was sensitive about the naming of their locale by RevJohn.
I can understand it, but, would consider that over the top usage of Admin and part of the costs that are incurred for cost.
1st approach, work with the poster
2nd, go to moderators
3. moderators go to admin or poster

I tried a few places around town and couldn't make it happen.
so it has to be a transparent or mostly transparent page that you can see the last WC page you were on through it.
I got it in California in the hotel. Up here I usually deal with Shaw. how could you get a screen shot on an ipad? might be able to copy down url.

I dont' use ipad, in windows you use the screen capture, ditto in a blackberry

Well, I think I have gremlins in my phone once in awhile, especially using open wifi in the city and it's not paranioa. I got a couple of ghost texts from an anonymous person using an out of town number. So, I am concerned about hacking of my account and my phone which I always have with me. By the way, about a month ago did anyone get a message saying WC was down for maintenance? It was weird to because Aaron didn't warn us but I forgot to mention it. It was a WC page too, but white screen with the WC logo. Like the greylisting page.

I suspect Stephen doesn't want anybody knowing where he resides. That's fair.

1. is a wash as there is no way anything from Stephenbooth is getting into my mailbox without being immediately deleted. I've had quite enough of those shenanigans thank you.
2. Only works if you are a member here. If you aren't then the only way to effect change here is to go to Aaron.
Grace and peace to you.

Stephen Booth has mentioned he is in Ottawa before. Last I knew, his Facebook profile that he uses to spam UCCan pages said Ottawa. It's pretty common knowledge that he's from Ottawa, and if he didn't want people knowing he is from Ottawa, then he should stop telling people he's from Ottawa.
Ottawa.

Stop talking sense. We all know you should run to mods, and mods should delete stuff as soon as somebody complains, because complainers are always right.
Forget common sense and googling "stephen booth ottawa site:wondercafe.ca" or anything of the sort, either as a forum member or forum mod, to notice that Stephen himself posted about living in Ottawa multiple times.
We can't break away from UCCan administrative control fast enough.
