WOW!! what an AMAZING vacation!!
my husband, my kids and i feel like we've been run over by a cairo bus, but was it ever worth it. in the span of 12 days, we toured 32 sites all over the country. from abu simbel to the pyramids of giza and sakkara, we flew in egyptair planes, cruise ships on lake nassar and the nile, and more busses than i can even count anymore. i don't think we had more than 2 nights of uninterupted sleep the whole time, cause touring the temple of philiae or the valley of the kings requires a 5am start, at least, to avoid the crushing daytime heat. in fact, one morning we were up at 2:30am, and to catch our flight from cairo to amsterdam and get back home we needed to be out of bed by 1am.
highlights for me?? walking along a path in the sahara, rounding a corner, and seeing the 4 seated kings of abu simbel. watching our seasoned bus driver manouver our large bus through downtown cairo, where traffic lights are few and far between, lanes are really just a suggestion, and apparently rules of the road are non existent. looking up at the pyramid of cheops. walking through the temple of karnak. relaxing on a luxury cruise ship as we sailed down the nile river.
wow.

Cool. Many of my wife's family (it's actually easier for them to travel there than Canada) have been there and their reports have bumped it up on our list of places to go.

Phew sighsnootles! Sounds amazing and exhausting! Fantastic that you were able to do this as a family - something you will all remember forever.
I recently watched the movie "Cairo Time" - very slow moving, not fantastically written, but the cinematography of Cairo was terrific! The writer/director commented that she wanted to explore & challenge some of the common misunderstandings that we in the 'west' have of Egypt.

Sighs!
I am leaving Athens for Egypt on Wednesday for 5 or 6 days. I was thinking Cairo, Luxor, and St. Catharine's Monastery/ascent of Sinai, before heading into Israel.
Got any suggestions on must-sees, must-be-careful-ofs, don't-eats, etc?

I have a little question of all you travellers - can 4 people (2 adults, 2 teens) go to Europe for a good history lesson on less than 8K??? I have no experience with such things, even with pricing vacations, or how to find deals, ... I am so amazed to hear these wonderful travel stories, but I'm so afraid of not getting what I expected, or getting taken, or wasting my money or ... I dont' even know... but we might have a chance to do something, and I don't want to get too far ahead of myself before making big mistakes.
