I'm starting a thread to ask for suggestions for a name for a kitten.

I'm not quite ready for a new cat, but I have agreed to foster a 6 month old kitten for a friend of mine who is part of a rescue agency. I'll just have her until she finds her permanent home. Not too long (likely a month or two) since she's at a cute age to adopt.
Anyways, she's just a little peanut and she comes with a huge name. She's not only young but she's small for her age. I think she needs a more appropriate name while she's staying here. Something a little shorter and nice. I thought it would be fun to ask for suggestions since there are lots of pet people here.
Feel free to make suggestions if you like. Oh and she's a muted calico - a mix of grey, orange and beige. And she's very friendly and cuddly and cute but also quiet. Really nice personality.
Any suggestions would be appreciated for a visiting Tigerkitten. She'll arrive in 3 weeks. Just starting to think through kitten-proofing my place again. Time to hide the valuables lol!

We have a Cat named Kali, which is very appropriate for this cat. A friend has a cat named Bast.

Hey TL - I'm glad to hear that you have agreed to take on a foster kitty. I know s/he won't replace your beloved Jasmine that you recently lost. However, I think (and hope) fostering is a good step.
As for kitten names - shucks I don't know - I kinda like reckless, is that a small kitty name. And I rather like tigerkitty too - kinda cute thinking about tigerlily and tigerkitty hanging out together. :-) Keep us posted.

Hmmm.....what kinds of names do you like? Cutesy stuff, human names, etc.
Just a couple suggestions for now: Chloe, Neko (the Japanese word for cat), Callie (since she's a calico) and Pretty Rainbow Sparkle Butterfly (that's what my friend's 4 year old daughter wants to call everything these days!)

We had a cat and dog at one time. We called the cat "CAT" and the dog "PUPPYDOG"
But then wondercafe wasn't around to give suggestions. LOL

I like all of those names. Thanks!
And that's neat about your friend's little girl, Namaste. Wanting to call everything Pretty Rainbow Sparkle Butterfly is very sweet lol.

Hi Tiger Lily,
Your self appointed therapist Pilgrim feels it is her duty to point out that your unconscious mind has provided your own answer.
And the winner is............. Peanut.
(Please send your therapy session fee in Oz dollars.)

You can never go wrong with Strawberry Ban-ban
Or Ingwe Malmstein.
Though my favourites were by some dear friends of mine, who are fellow lovers of words and whim...their cats original names were Murder and Mayhem. When they got them, they changed them to The Matter of France and the Matter of Greece (Charlemagne and Alexander).
Just a Self-writing poem,

Good catch Pilgrim's Progress. Please don't tell me that you charge $100 an hour. Mind you that just took you a milisecond so the equivalent of about 25 cents should do it, right?!

Inanna Whimsey those names are just too funny. Strawberry ban-ban. And I'm thinking that the bigger Tigercat could have been both Murder and Mayhem all in one. Your friends have a great sense of humour with the later related name change.
Time for a rest but will be back to check in later.

25 cents, are you kidding??? Think of all the education and training I've undertaken, not to mention a guilt ridden, trauma filled childhood.
I'm aware that you're missing myst and her family, and you're displacing your hostility onto your hard-working therapist. Perhaps we should increase your therapy sessions to two a week?

When I was a child my sister found a kitten. My mother suggested that we call her Joanna - I have no idea why. But Joanna it was. She was the family pet while I was growing up.
Cats that I've had since. My daughter got a little fluffy kitten that looked something like a baby lion. We called it "Tawny". Tawny grew to almost 20 pounds, mainly muscle in his prime.
The next cat was black. For some reason Nickodemus came to my mind. That was his name. Sometimes shortened to Nick, sometimes to Demi.
When my daughter established a home of her own she took in a stray kitten - a calico female with white face and chest. Perhaps remembering Tawny, she called this kitten Teena.
Whatever name you pick, the kitten will grow into it.

I'd love to have a big Maine Coon cat. But it isn't going to happen. Mr. Seeler thinks that at our age it is best to be pet free and to enjoy our daughter's dog.

I guess that's a turning point isn't it? I was just thinking that when my cats are gone (they're 8), no more kittens since they might outlive me.
I could always adopt an older cat though.

Cats are cool we have had many cats over the years. we acquired 2 cats once and named them Freebee and Bonus. We also had a cat named Gypsy Forman because whe was aroamer and George Forman had just won the heavyweight boxing match. Weird huh.
My brother got a cat from someone who was coming to town from chicago and his cat had kittens we named the kitten Chicago chichi for short.
I think you should go for Peanut.

Ha! - Pilgrim's Progress - I'd like to see those credentials! At twice a week I think I'll have to live there to avoid those expensive flights back and forth. Perhaps travel expenses and some sort of accommodation are included in your fee??

Neat to hear the different names and stories and how names were chosen. Thanks Seeler and Musicsoothes.
Ninjafaery, Pilgrim's Progress and Musicsoothes seem to be voting in favour of Peanut. Namaste put in a 2nd vote for her friend's daughter's choice (the 4 part name lol) which could be shortened to Sparkle.
Have to think about it some more. But very excited that visiting Tigerkitten will be here in 3 weeks.

Kiki is a sweet name Hilary. Good for a kitten and good for an adult cat too.
Kitty is cute Beloved!
And consumingfire I had to look up Lemminkainen - a hero in Finnish songs who overcomes many obstacles? Hope I got that right. If not let me know - too many choices on Google :-) Now that's a long one!!

I once met a little boy whose family cat was named "Mischief". My cat's name is Lady, but most of the time she goes by other terms of affection, including "Kitttikins".
Next cat I get I want to call "Starbuck" because of my devotion to Battlestar Galactica. But she will have to be at least somewhat badass.

MikePaterson your list really made me laugh (especially Mousebreath for some reason). And Alpo?? Just making a mental note not to let you near the kitten!
Thanks for the vote BethanyK. And Frankie is a really cool name, St. Judds. Nice for a female kitten too.
Kappa it's interesting what we name our pets and then what they actually get called day to day. Some cute names. And then........well I'm a little hesitant to say what Tigercat was called when standing on my chest and waking me up from a nap Not my most patient moment(s) but definitely very rich with vocabulary lol!
Anyways, much as I hate to admit it to Pilgrim's Progress I've decided to call the kitten Peanut while she's here. Thanks everybody for the great suggestions. I'm keeping them for the future.

Why bother naming something that will not come when called?
Tiger Lily
Posted on: 10/09/2009 17:40
So that the cat knows that she has been personally invited (while mulling things over and deciding whether she actually wants to come) Revjohn :-)
Truthfully both of my cats in the past came when called - unless it was time for a pill. Or they were seriously napping. Or..........well it didn't suit them at that particular moment lol.

I think a really cute name increases the chances of adoption. "Peanut" is very appealing, I think (unless there are allergy issues).
