A Leftover Turkey Discussion from our Family's Thanksgiving in October

Before you put your bird in the oven should you put bacon strips on top of it to keep it moist?

We don't do that because my daughter is allergic to pork.

We roast our turkey breast down and that keeps it very moist.

About 1/2 hour before done we turn the turkey over to brown the skin.

Rita

Well, yeah, if your daughter is allergic it just makes sense that you wouldn't. A couple of years ago we put a tent of aluminum foil over the turkey. That seemed to keep it moist.

I used to covet the bacon that was put over the turkey legs to keep them moist. A special treat,

As far as I know, the best advice to cook a decent turkey is to go with a fresh vs frozen one, and use one of those single-use thermometers that pop when the turkey is done. I use foil to keep the legs from drying out.

Baste and brown when it's almost ready.

No, we have never used bacon to keep the turkey moist. Sounds like it would be tasty, though.

One of my sisters always cooks a fresh turkey, and it is always delicious. Basting, of course, is essential. I also like to put spiced butter under and on top of the skin.

Last year we put three or four strips on and it made for a tasty turkey. This year we ended up putting about a pound of bacon on, and it made for a very salty and oily gravy. The turkey still tasted good though.
