Podcasts

My husband is really into listening to podcasts.  He got me into it as well, but for a different reason.  I love to listen to them before bed, they really help put me too sleep!  I used to tape record one class in undergrad (he talked while we were frantically coping figures) and I started to use it when I couldn't sleep.  I thought it was just because it was kind of boring listening to, but I guess it's something about just laying down and listening to something.

I find the trick is to find something interesting enough to keep me distracted, but not so interesting that it energies me and gets me thinking.  Does anyone have any suggestions for (free) ones to try out?

I LOVE listening to podcasts, especially at bed time.  It's not that they're boring, but just that they distract my mind from the worries of the day, so I can sleep more easily.  But I've learned so much!!  Here's some of my favourites:

The HIstory of Rome - so interesting and very funny - I'm leaving for Rome in about 2 weeks more or less because of this podcast - ~1/2 hour

Big Ideas - fascinating lectures on topics from science to religion to literature to...you name it   ~1 hour

Tapestry/All Things Considered/The Spirit of Things - spiritual topics discussed by the CBC, BBC and Australian national network.

One of my favourites is the Center for Inquiry podcasts because it has such a wide range of interviewees.

If you like listening to people's role-playing game sessions, I'd recommend Role Playing Public Radio.

Carolyn Casey has a radio show; some of them she puts up as podcasts...she's quite the hoot if you're into mystical spiritual political explorations :3

Then there's the one that's the tip of my mind but I can't remember it but it is an american radio show where the guy will talk aboot and interview all sorts of fringe stuff...ack!  Art Bell!  Woo!

Ben Croshaw, creator of some brilliant computer games, has some free podcasts where he, with his wonderful sense of humour, talks aboot games he has played (or games he wish he had never played) or aboot the gaming industry.

BONUS:  my nephews introduced me to the following guy -- warning:  this will make milk go out of your nose.

Bumping this up as Tiger Lily can't sleep and I wouldn't mind a few more suggestions.  I'm going to check some out now!

My hubby (I need to give him a name on here I think!) mainly listens to skeptic podcasts.  The one I like the best is the Reality Check.  I find they don't always check everything well though and it can get me a little wound up.  Sometimes they just get me laughing too hard, they don't take themselves too seriously and I usually enjoy their topic choice.

My next option is QuackCast.  It's a little longer and not as funny.  If you're into alternative medicine this might not be one to listen to before going to bed.  Even if I agree with him about a study, I find some of his conclusions to be too biased against anything 'natural' (best example I can think of is the one on probiotics).  Very informative though, even if I don't agree with his opinions, the facts seem to be well researched.

Ugh, I'm rambling, sorry!  Time for me to start listening to some podcasts instead of spouting off here!
