Should Math Be Taught in Schools?

So I guess some of you have heard of the recent kerfuffle* in the US -- there is a rise in people questioning the right of just teaching math in schools.

The winners of the Miss USA 2011 were asked their view on this.

After you have watched it, what is your opinion?  Should math be taught at schools?

Maths is really r-e-a-l-l-y hard. Kids should not be forced to do really r-e-a-l-l-y hard stuff, especially lazy fat dumb kids... it's soooo much harder for them. Thinking, spelling, walking... all these things are downright abusive.

You DO know, don't you, that this vid is a spoof, a take-off, a parody....

What's YOUR view, Whimsey??? ....Is your misogny directed just towards the U.S., or is it universal?

Mike

when  you accuse people of misogyny you should explain why. Also you might consider that attitudes towards women are different in different parts of the world. People in rural PEI who are over 60 might consider that women are dumb, but it's been many many years that that fallacy has been repeated among people in most of Canada.  It has been a long time since women in general have received a better  education than men. thus the above joke not aimed at women. (Unless if was made by someone over 60 living in the rural parts of the Maritimes. which I doubt. and not some non-gender specific person living in a city.)

It is also bad form to accuse someone of hating women, or any other group, without backing up such an accusation, and just making a smart asses aside to it.

(SG-- loved that line, too... reminds me of another I heard a few years back, "We should go metric, every inch of the way."

You'd have to ask those actresses, really.

And who, truly, but you are responsible for how you feel, what you think, and how you act?  If you are feeling misogynistic (because you obviously, when you wrote that, were thinking that), why put it on anyone else but you?

"Those who take it literally deserve it."

Unfortunately, with creationism non-math trying to be taught in schools, someone's literalism is going to be hurting kid's educations :3

(it seems that even the elders among us fall prey to the instant-gratification world of the internet)

Alex: to fake videos like these... that get seriously more stupid... is satire when it's aimed at the the right target. This is aimed at the contestants who are very obviously caught up in a whole sexist stereotype thing and are trying desperately to impress idiots. It is very easy for these clips -- and there are a number of them -- to be taken as a slagging of women in general.

The anti-science thing in the U.S. (and the Canadian government, come to that) is not being driven by intimidated and under-educated women. It is being driven by right wing "Christian" fanatics... including power-broking legislators. And they are almost all men. In part they are mostly men because these same men don't believe women should talk out in church or anywhere else. So where are the satirical videos of them? I'm sure they exist.

I guess I'm a little sensitised to it by the level of ambient misogyny I have seen in Canada, particularly in Ontario, but I suspect because that's where we've spent most time. Women ARE discriminated against, women ARE stereotyped, women ARE lower paid, domestic violence is worryingly widespread.. and hotly denied: we don't hear a lot of promises of a crackdown on domestic violence when our government rants about crime. There's a target for some satire.

I have heard so many jokes about dumb women, stupid wives and women as bimbos and bad drivers that it gets pretty predictable. My experience has generally been that many Canadians are from being the genial, non-racist, non-sexist, open, welcoming people they typically proclaim themselves to be. So I do raise the issue where there seems to be one; bigotry winds me up because I have seen too much of its consequences. It's not an amusing little personality quirk.

As far as math is concerned, my views align with those of Peng Yee Lee, a Singaporian mathematics educator at the National Institute of Education in Singapore, who wrote as follows in the Journal of Mathematics Education:

"The Math Reforms of the 1960s started a controversy between mathematicians
and mathematics educators. This happened in China in the  1980s. In this
article, we review briefly the history of geometry leading to the kind of
geometry we teach in schools today. We record the views of mathematicians
and mathematics educators on the new mathematics curriculum. Finally, we
discuss a feasible path of moving forward in order to resolve the matter. This
is a written version of a talk given at the Hangzhou conference in June 2010.
Key words: mathematics, mathematics education, reform.

A Controversy

The Math Reforms of  the 1960s started a controversy between
mathematicians and mathematics educators. This happened in China in the
1980s. It happened in the United States much earlier and it went on until
recently. It was so serious that it was called a war. In this article, we refer
mainly to what happened in China. In fact, there was no controversy as far as
the teaching objective of mathematics is concerned between mathematicians
and mathematics educators. One major change in the Math Reforms was the
reduction of plane geometry in the syllabus (standards). The same happened
in China as elsewhere in the world. The question of whether we should or
should not reduce the geometry content created a deep divide between
mathematicians and mathematics educators, particularly in China.
In this article, we review briefly the history of geometry leading to the
kind of geometry we teach in schools today. We record the views of
mathematicians and mathematics educators on the new mathematics
curriculum. Finally, we discuss a feasible path of moving forward in order to
resolve the matter..."

The rest of the article can be found here ...

Mr. Peng Yee Lee's views, I think,  are closest to those of Miss Arizona ... "On the one hand there is math and on the other hand there is ... not math"

Given the history shared recently by Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann they could probably ease up on the math and add some more history.

I'm just saying.

Grace and peace to you.

You make a good and important  point. However satire is art, and thus somewhat objective.  In your first post if you had just said that, instead of just implying that Whimsey was a misogynist. That would have allowed for a discussion about sexism in art.

However you must understand that for some this video could be seen as an attack on the sexism that allows beauty contests to continue.

Canada did away with beauty contests many years ago, but the whole idea that women should be judged and rank on there beauty, (which includes race, if you notice almost all such contestants are white) and not there ability to think is perhaps one the video is attacking.

However based on the fact that it is a parody of a real video produced by a beauty contest on the contestants views on evolution. i would say it is an attack on beauty contests.

Your second post allows for such a discussion, however your first post does not.

Generally comments and humour directed at another culture (American)  would be seen in bad taste. However US culture and values threatens the rest of the world (including Canada) through both environmental actions and military actions. Both of which are enabled by the real views of the real contestants that the video is a parody of.

Alex: I just think the target here is something other than sexism, the American education system or, even beauty contests -- although when you put all three together it is a tempting target. the laughs rather seems to be on the "dumb" women.

Canada may not have had beauty contests for yonks, but it certainly has plenty of misogyny and there are plenty of reliable stats that make that clear.

I do see a perfectly valid target being right wing fundamentalist Christian anti-science attitudes in North America, but the satire was not about the source of those attitudes so much as its victims... and that's my objection.

I also have to wonder when some respondents here seem unaware that it's a spoof.

I just Googled Miss Canada and came up with a hit.  Also a hit for Miss Universe Canada.  Maybe this nonsense still continues to encourage girls to view themselves in competition with others for mere physical looks? I detest the whole concept.

Looking through the files, I see that Tecumseh is older than Canada...wow.
