When I feel sad, I listen to certain songs...either that make me sad or make me happy.
What songs help you (either to become happy or stay sad)?
I tend to listen to "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn.

One of the songs I love to listen to when I am feeling down is Ordinary Day by Great Big Sea - it always elevates my mood at least a little.

You're giving me a walk down memory lane.
When I was younger I always turned to a song when I had a broken heart.
The three I remember are Neil Diamond's "Long Fellow Serenade", Olivia Newton-John singing "I Love You, I Honestly Love You" and Judy Collins singing 'The Rose".
But, broken hearts do mend.
Whoever said in the Bible "This too, shall pass" got it right!

I'll see your Ordinary Day and raise you "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Eric Idle from the Monty Python movie Life of Brian.
Beethoven's 9th works for me, too. Starts off rather somber and then explodes with joy at the end.

If I'm really sad for some reason i don't want to listen to music with words in it.
I'll play the classics. But nothing neutralizes my soul like Pachelbel Canon in D major.

my songs of choice change with what is going on in my life. When my husband was diagnoised with cancer I absolutely hated the song This little light of mine. I liked the song by Billy Ray Cyrus "stand for what you believe in, Stand for all that is right..."
BTW m,y husband has been cancer free for a year now and this little light of mine is still not my favorite but I am able to sing it know.

I find sad music helps me moderate my sorrow. It's theraputic to share it in such an organized way as music. I listen to:
-the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack (which ends with the joyful and rediculous "With These Hands" by Tom Jones),
-Philip Glass: The Hours,
-Bach's Sinfonia, Agnus Dei, and Wir Setzen uns mit Tranen nieder (howlingly miserable stuff).
To cheer myself up, if I don't want to feel down and want to exersize some control over my mood and have a good day, I put on cheerful, jolly stuff like the Stray Cats, Ramones, Madness, reggae, ABC, North African Groove...

Ooo, the Miserere, lovely.
My recording of this one is played slower, heavier, and more miserable, but this isn't bad.

I almost listed The Cure's Dissintegration album, as I used to listen to it a lot, and it is a masterpiece and precious to me, but I don't listen to it much nowadays, and tend to reach for other cd's when I'm sad, but here's one of those gloriously sad tracks. I love how the drums sound like they have puddles of water on them and the whole thing is rainy. Masterpiece.

If you want to be sad and roll with the mood, there's always Leonard Cohen. While his songs are from as universally depressing as his critics make them out to be, his soft, gravelly delivery tends to give them a bit of a sombre mood even when they aren't meant to be heard that way.

Tyson, I love the Magnum Mysterium. Lots of lovely DaVinci pictures too. Listening to down in a hole now, yup, pretty miserable.
A break up song of mine that still brings me down but used to make me wanna throw up is Chris Isaac Wicked Game. Eww.

Amy's Back in Austin
I think this is the ultimate break up song. They don't get back together and I think they both miss each other. It makes me even sadder now because I can't go home to Mom and Dad. Some break ups you really don't know what went wrong. It is sad to miss someone. I think you can miss a lot of people. Doesn't have to just be an ex.
We left Texas on a windy night
In a beat-up Chevy van
We loaded it up with our innocent dreams
And all the love we had
We didn't know then how hard it was
Livin' on our own
I'd find her cryin' late at night
Talkin' to the folks back home
I wonder what went wrong
And where is she now I'd love to know
I bet Amy's back in Austin
Workin' at the LaZona Rosa Cafe
I remember the night we lost it
And the day she went away
Was it the angry words or did she miss her momma
I don't know but it don't feel right
I bet Amy's back in Austin
And I'm missin' her tonight
Workin' ten hours in a West Coast sun
Can make the days so long
And watchin' the moon crashin' into the ocean
Alone sure gets old
I remember how sweet it was
Where is she now I need to know
I bet Amy's back in Austin
Workin' at the LaZona Rosa Cafe
I remember the night we lost it
And the day she went away
Was it the angry words or did she miss her momma
I don't know but it don't feel right
I bet Amy's back in Austin
And I'm missin' her tonight
Could this desert wind
Carry me back again
With my heart in my hand
Baby, baby I'm missin' you
Was it the angry words or did she miss her momma
I don't know but it don't feel right
I bet Amy's back in Austin
And I'm missin' her missin' her tonight
Oh I bet Amy's back in Austin
I bet Amy's back in Austin
I bet Amy's back in Austin
I bet Amy's back in Austin
I bet Amy's back in Austin
I bet Amy's back in Austin

Hi Serena,
If you are talking about yourself, I've been there too.
I posted one of my favourite singers above.
Here is another song that sings to my experience.
It's called "My Paper Heart"

I am in a sappy mood so this song makes me happy today. :)
Love Story
We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes
And the flashback starts
I'm standing there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights
See the party, the ball gowns
I see you make your way through the crowd
And say hello, little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you please don't go, and I said
Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes
So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while
'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
But you were everything to me
I was begging you please don't go and I said
Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it's real
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Oh oh
I got tired of waiting
Wondering if you were ever coming around
My faith in you is fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said
Romeo save me I've been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you but you never come
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring
And said, marry me Juliet
You'll never have to be alone
I love you and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress
It's a love story baby just say yes
Oh, oh, oh, oh
'Cause we were both young when I first saw you

Another song that makes me laugh....
The Church on the Cumberland RoadJust about a mile off-a one-oh-nine,
There's a little church sittin' back in the pines.
I promised that girl she was gonna be mine;
I wouldn't be surprised if she was standin' there cryin'.
Wo-ah, I didn't know this bored-out Ford could go so slow.
Wo-ah, You got to put your foot down on the floor,
'Yeah we've been rocking all night, now, don't you know
You gotta get me to the church on Cumberland Road.
Verse 2:
Billy's passed out in the back, But I think he's alive.
Bobby's got his head hangin' over the side.
Here we are doin' only ninety-five.
What's the matter with you, man? I thought you said you could drive!
Wo-ah, I didn't know this bored-out Ford could go so slow.
Wo-ah, You got to put your foot down on the floor,
'Yeah we've been rocking all night, now, don't you know
You gotta get me to the church on Cumberland Road.
Verse3:
Sweeter than the dew on a honeysuckle vine,
Hotter than noon on the Fourth of July,
Cutest little girl that I ever have known
Waitin' at the church on Cumberland Road.
Wo-ah, I didn't know this bored-out Ford could go so slow.
Wo-ah, You got to put your foot down on the floor,
'Yeah we've been rocking all night, now, don't you know
You gotta get me to the church on Cumberland Road.

Oops - I'm sorry, but I seem to have erred in thinking it was a direct Bible and verse quote.
However, the idea is there in Ecclesiastes 3 :1-8.
As everything has it's time, it follows that nothing lasts.
Welcome to the Cafe - but no more difficult questions.

Thanks, I couldn't find it anywhere either. I didn't intend to create a difficult situation for you. I liked the quote and felt you were more in tune with the bible than I was when you gave credit to your quote.
I've had a lot of friends over the years give me advice and say it was in the bible so that is why I am trying to read it. I would like to pass on some good helps for some of my friends but I also would like to be able to reference it for them and actually understand what was going on at the time of the quote to see if it is really relevant.
Thanks again for helping me.

hello to the new folks - Sterton, Young Glass & Another frame!
Just sayin' - sorry to hear that sad songs are on your mind, and I hope that things aren't too bad.
I find music evolves through the mood/or rather the mood evolves through the music. Metric & Yeah Yeah Yeahs are good for melancholy sounding tunes but I don't know the words. My sweetie & I, when we've had a tough week paying bills or parenting or dealing with work, we'll put on Charlie Winston or Playing for Change, or Louis Prima (and then we want to dance!). I can tell if he's in a bad mood if the music is really loud (ie metal!) That is his 'tell the world to P*** off' music.
Ordinary Day by GBS is a favourite, especially at the moment when you're ready to shake off the mood, or fed up by it.
And no matter what, find a friend to help you sort through the mood. The cafe is pretty good for it too - great people here.

Innana, Totaly agree on the Ave Maria Guarani. Heart wrenching. What a story. Our Town, ug, how upsetting: the last moments of Northern Exposure, as the characters shut us out of their lives, or that's how it felt. I was gutted.
