Tests, Pencils, ACTION!

Genties & ladlemen,

it is that time of year again!  Yes, that time of year where YOU get to take a look at your unconscious biases.

How do you do that?  Glad you asked.

We take the Implicit Association Tests!  Here is what I would like to do...I'll show you the results of my tests from the web page that I will be giving you shortly.  Then, you can supply yours as well.

They ask for demographic details because they keep track of statistics -- you don't have to fill out any of them, you can even only fill out some.

If you have taken these tests before, you get to see if and how they have changed.

Ready?

The IAT home page is here -- CLICK to start!  To access their page, you might have to allow popups on your browser.

So here's my bits

Age:  a moderate automatic preference for young compared to old, not changed from previous test.I said that I feel the same way toward "old" people than I do "young" people and that I felt "old" was 100.  Looks like I am within the 'average' on this count :3

Skin-tone:  Slight automatic preference for light-skinned people to dark-skinned people, which makes me among 16% of the web respondents.

Race:  Strong automatic preference for white to black people.  This ties me with 27% of web respondents (moderate category is the same as well).

Gender:  Moderate association with male with science/female with humanities...which makes me like 26% of the web respondents, the highest group being slight.  This hasn't changed from the last time I took the test.

Sexuality:  Moderate automatic preference for gay people.  That makes me comparable to 6% of the web respondents.  This has changed since the last time I took the test.

Weight:  Slight automatic preference for thin people.  That makes me comparable to 7% of the web respondents.

Countries:  Moderate automatic preference for Canada -- darn.  That makes me comparable with nearly every Canadian, eh?

So I can view this as a glimpse into my unconscious BS that colours how I act in the world.  Or I can just try to be uber skeptical and see that "Hey, I can find holes in this test, so therefore, it doesn't say anything at all."  Interesting stuff, nonetheless :3

I'll have to try them.  When I first saw the topic, I thought this would be about EQAO testing in Ontario since the kids are doing those right now.

I've done two tests so far:

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Canada compared to the United States

Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for White People compared to Black People.

I have to admit that I'm not pleased about the second one at all.  I think the test does a good job of revealing those cultural messages that seep in and become a part of people, whether it's in line with what they believe or not.

That was my first thought, too, though knowing Inanna I knew it was unlikely. Little Mendalla did the first two sections of the Grade 6 language exam yesterday.

I'll look at your test later, IW. At work right now and really need to get out of here and start doing real work.

Hi InannaWhimsey,

For interest.

Age:  I was mid-range for all demographics with Young Adults edging out Children and Middle-aged Adults who tied and Older Adults were lowest.

Skin-tone:  Slight automatic preference for dark skinned persons over light skinned persons which put me in with 6% of web respondents.

Race:  moderate automatic preference for white to black people.  This ties me with 27% of web respondents.

Gender:  Slight association of Male with Family and Female with career.  That puts me in with 4% of web respondents

Sexuality:  Moderate automatic preference for gay people.  That makes me comparable to 6% of the web respondents.  This has changed since the last time I took the test.

Weight:  moderate automatic preference for thin people.  That makes me comparable to 27% of the web respondents.

Countries:  I didn't see one for countries.  I'm guessing you are putting us on.

Gullibility:  Moderate Automatic Preference to trust people. wink

Grace and peace to you.

John

Inanna,

I just did the age test.

Immediately, I had a problem with it.

I'm left-handed (and also left leaning on most issues) and I noticed that the positive response was related to the right hand, whilst the negative response was related to the left hand.

Also, regardless of the age grouping, I felt positive about the happy smiling faces - and negative about the grumps.

Bah, humbug!  no
