I saw the last half of Goldhawk Live. The comments from callers were predictable with many agreeing that if religious ads are permitted on the TTC, atheist ads should be too---although the wording of the ad hardly reflects an atheist perspective---and others finding anything that dares challenge their view to be offensive. I found that sentiment remarkably hypocritical and arrogant, of course, as they are unconcerned if I or other non-believers are offended by pro-religion ads, but even suggest that they might be wrong about god and they're frothing at the mouth.
What was also curious was Adam Giambrone remarking that the TTC had to approve the ads no matter what as the issue has already been before the Supreme Court of Canada and the TTC would have been ordered to approve the ads or be in violation of the Charter. Does that mean they really approved them or approved them because they would have had to anyway, whether they liked it or not?
The poll found 71% of the callers to be in favour of the ads.

I'm new to this site, but it's curious that the poll on the ads here is 51-49% at the time of this writing in favour of 'Probably no god.'
The polls have one glaring difference, of course: on Goldhawk, it was 'are you in favour of the ads' whereas here it is which ad do you prefer: 'no god' or 'is god.' I wonder how many here chose the UC's version---that tries to reinforce that god does exist---because they're actually opposed to the concept that god does not exist and maybe even offended by the ads. Either way, the results here seem to indicate that folks here are less tolerant than the general public who watched Goldhawk.

well, not sure Way out there- the questions are very different, so I like the ads, but I voted 'probably a god' - how does that work for you?
I don't think there is a feeling on the cafe that we are opposed to the concept that God doesn't exist. I think we are quite open to that discussion, but I for one still voted on the side of 'Does' rather than 'doesn't'.
Besides, neither of the polls are even close to scientific. It reminds me of the Crabby Joe restaurants deciding national elections based on people's burger choice. The wondercafe poll just generates discussion, rather than anything useful beyond that.

a couple things....
first of all, not everyone who posts on here is a UCCan. so it is not surprising that the poll numbers read as they do.
secondly, even UCC people i do know vote against the 'probably is a god' one because the entire ad doesn't begin to touch how they see their relationship with a higher power.
it was put there simply to encourage discussion, and to that end it has been quite successful.

Fair enough. I have seen some apparent non-religious people here, so there's probably a reasonable cross-section of society.
Of course, that diversity lends to the credibility of the poll, in spite of its' unscientificness. People still tend to vote on the side they're comfortable with. Of those that voted 'does,' I simply wonder how many are actually opposed to or offended by the ad. Would they even admit it in this 'open' environment?

who knows?? if they aren't going to admit to it in this environment, though, i'd say its more their loss than yours or mine.

It is interesting to know that there is some kind of supreme court challenge. I would like to know more about that because Metro Transit in Halifax has refused to run the ads and an additional ad that says "you can be good without god".

I knew nothing about the SC challenge until Giambrone mentioned it. I'm sure there must be information on it somewhere.

WoW! When I joined this community a couple of days ago, the vote was decidedly for 'probably not,' and in the matter of just like 2 days it has swung the other way, though the percentages still show 50-50. Has it always swung like a pendulum?
