What are you doing on Remembrance Day?

Two minutes of silence once a year is not enough to "honour" our fallen heroes. It definitely should be a statutory holiday, a day we can spend thinking about and honouring fellow human beings who fought for our "freedom". On the other hand, if the majority of the population can't even take 2 minutes to remember our fallen soldiers, what will be the point of recognizing it as a statutory holiday. It would just be another day off in peoples eyes.

I agree we should do more, however my childrens schools have the two minutes of silence and prays. Sure it's not enough, but what do you think that Canadians are the most un patriotic and most dont care!

Not everybody who marched off to war and returned is big on rubbing peoples noses in it. Sure some vets want to be sure we know what they did and won't ever let us forget it, but I have an Uncle who survived Dieppe and he never brings up his war experiences. A lot of people like my Uncle saw it as their duty to protect freedom for all of us and that means freedom from evil scum like the nazis but also means freedom to respect what happened all those years ago in our own way. If wearing a poppy is how you show you respect those who served then great but don't expect everybody else to follow your lead. I can respect what happened and respect those who fought for my freedom without it being formalized at a cenetaph or with a stat holiday.

As an A/SLt with our Sea Cadet Corps,I am proud we are active in Remembrance Day observances. It is a stat holiday here in N.S. .Our cadets help the Legion sell poppies every year and they do it with pride!!
The are front and centre in organizing services the day before at the High school. They take part in official services on Remembrace Day, doing everything from helping Vets to their seats, being the flag bearers, being the honour guard at the Cenotaph and laying wreaths. That night the band plays at the Legion supper and the Cadets serve the Vets their meals.
I am proud of our Cadets and the job they do and also proud to remember those who gave the ultimat sacrifice.

I'll be attending a service here in Toronto, either at the newly unveiled Veteran's Memorial at Queen's Park (Ontario Provincial Legislature). We'll be going as a family - my wife, my toddler son and I.

Last week at our Church, I helped with the morning's service (with the minister's pre-approval, of course) by wearing a WWII's infantry uniform (minus rifle and other weapons, of course) and reading the Roll of Honour. At Children's Time, I spoke briefly to the children about the importance of remembering and the virtue of courage - often overlooked in relation to Christianity. I mentioned Saint George - not just some of the stories told about him - but the principle importance of his symbolism of Christian bravery - the courage to do the right thing despite danger or fear. Not acting without fear, but managing to act in spite of it.

I don't think that remembering the sacrifice of soldiers in war is incompatible at all with religion; even one ostensibly as pacifistic as the United Church.

It's a stat holiday here in Alberta too.

I'm not doing anything because I have personal beliefs that I do not want to honour those that kill others, no matter for what reason. I don't shove it anyone's face though obviously, I just don't do anything.

I was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets for 7 years. I believe that 2 mins a year is not enough. We need to be hounoring our vets more often, as it because of them we have the freedom to worship.

Hitler persicuted the Jews in WWII. Can you just emagine what this world would have been like with Hitler in charge. That would be like allowing Satan to rule over Heaven,

We owe these people more than we know!

On a side note, has anyone heard of the White Poppy Campaign. This is a disgrace!

I don't really find the white poppy campaign a disgrace. It is not used for people to tell everyone that they hate those that fight in wars. It is for them to show others that they remember all of the victims of war and that they hope for a future when there are no wars. There is nothing wrong with that, I think it's a nice idea.

The White Poppy Campaign takes away from the fundraising efforts of the Royal Canadian Legion.

This is the biggest fund rasier the legion has, and if they take a cut back in donations recieved, the Vets could be in serious trouble.

The Legion gives assistance to Vets who need it. Things like long term medical care and prmotion of awareness.

Im not bashing why the White Poppys exist, its a great cause. My issue is with using the poppy itself. Why not use a white rose?

And why choose this time of year to promote it. There are 364 other days of the year. This is the one time of the year that poppys must be read.

A senior Legion spokesman had this so say:

"The use of the poppy in any other colour other than in blood red is a disservice and dishonour to all our fallen dead, the past and our latest veterans,"

Just my opinion. Take it how you want it!

As Legion padre I spent the morning today at local schools. And in every grade the students were far more attentive and polite than my classmates would have been 20 years ago. I think we are making an impact in why we need to remember.

Proud2bCDN - Yeah it would be nicer if the white poppies were a rose or something and they were in a different time of the year. There should be different times to think about both.

I will remember Remembrance Day when my remembrance is not forced by the school board.

I believe if they were Jewish, that some of the posts on this thread would be a lot different.
Other nations could not stand by and do nothing while one nation tried to destroy an entire race of people.
As it is they waited too long to get involved.

I stand at my desk for 2 minutes every Remembrance day and turn my radio up.
If I am off that day I go to the memorial service.

Thank you to all veterans who laid their lives on the line so that I have the freedom to say my piece.
