Wonder Finale

Hi All,

While I am guardedly hopeful that a solution will be found to keep WonderCafe.ca up and running I am mindful that such optimism is not always rewarded.

With that in mind my thoughts turn to how best to say good-bye.  Do we start a series of maudlin threads or might we plan some gatherings in which we can get together and look one another in the eye as we wish each other well?

I am aware that travel is always a concern so I don't think one central event will work.

At present I don't have many ideas beyond what we have managed to accomplish in the past.

Thoughts?

Grace and peace to you.

John

Those of us in BC, could gather, and groups in the prairies, and those out east, and in the Maritimes- and each group could Skype (or something similar- Livestream?) so we can all say hello/ goodbye?

John, this seems so defeatest.

Crazyheart,

I am not seeing it that way at all. Even if there is going to be a reincarnation of Wondercafe, it won't be the same & I think it is important to honour what has gone on here. I have also been wondering about how we will say goodbye to each other. A series of "maudlin threads" (as John puts it) doesn't seem like a great idea. But I would not be opposed to a few threads dedicated to saying goodbye and wishing each other well.

Perhaps we could all select a common date and coordinate a potluck celebration

I propose this for a variety of reasons, inclusion being most important (not everyone can afford restaurant prices)  All people can experience care through breaking bread.  And all can bring something to the table.  Wondrous would it be to have a potluck meal, held on the same day, in every province and territory, to celebrate WC, its minisrty and its members.

In Vancouver, there's this place that a UCCan congregation recently bought:

I would love to be able to gather in person. I don't think that is an option though, since I am almost as far away from Vancouver as I am Winnipeg. Then there are other parts of the country. We are a far flung group.

Having said that, I don't know what to suggest. If I think of something, I will add it.

That's true Northwind. I was thinking of you and the couple of trips you have made here since I've been here- forgetting actually how far away you are. You're almost in Alaska (where you can see Russia). Near the Yukon anyway. ;) I'd be interested in going there, but it wouldn't be practical for me either.

Some of us are just too far afield for anything more than a maudlin thread.  You say 'the prairies', kimmio, but I'm pretty sure that amounts to less than ten (I can count only four easily) of us in over 1300 km.

Hi crazyheart,

crazyheart wrote:

In order for it to be defeatest one needs to demonstrate some form of surrender on my part.  Being prepared is not the equivalent of rolling over and quitting.

I think doing nothing of the sort is tantamount to putting one's head in the sand and is delusional.

If we plan some final gatherings and it turns out that they are premature then they don't have to be final gatherings at all, simply more gatherings of the kind we have already enjoyed.

Far better to plan ahead than to have WonderCafe.ca close and then think, "Hey we should have done something . . . ."

Grace and peace to you.

There are several Albertans, aren't there? And a Saskatchewanian (?). I don't know about Manitoba. There's only a handful of us in BC, too. Most are in Ontario.

And there's Pilgrim's too... Maybe we could try our best to gather in small groups, and those of us who can't can sign on to a Livestream type site and we could all be present that way?

Gather together...? Someone pointed out on another thread that there are about 20,000 registered wondercafe users. We should book some convention centers, sports stadiums, and the like.

For that cost we could keep WC open.

Manitoban here. And very far away.

I don't find Rev. John's topic or post defeatist . . . I think it is reality. Whether we like it or not, wondercafe as we know it, is ending, ansd soon!

Even if our resident techies come up with a plan for another forum, it will not be wondercafe as we know it.

So, I think we do need to go out with a bang. I just don't know what that looks like.

I live in northern Manitoba, and it is very unlikely that I would be able to go to a gathering, but I am open to other ideas.

I do feel that we need to say goodbye.

Even if there's an 11th hour contingency plan for the Wondercafe, it won't be the same again.

But I feel that maudlin threads will just lead to despair,  and overly sentimental posts, and we'll feel like we're sitting around singing "Nearer My God to Thee" while we wait for the ship to go down.

Let's not do that. Let's have meaningful, enriching discussion while we still can.

And perhaps, when the time get close, (like the last 12 hours,) Aaron can put a countdown clock on the page, and we can have one one last Wonderparty to keep vigil. But not to despair - instead, lets have a blast. We could have threads like "favourite limericks' to "celebrity you'd most like to go to bed with" to "the wierdest thing I ever found in a collection plate." Let's say goodbye by laughing together in a 12 hour vigil.

Who's with me?

Go, sounds good to me because people fly over Regina, drive around it so a  real gathering couldn,t happen.     LOL

P.s. And I am sure the National Church wouldn't cover the expences for 20,000 people. (unless we donated it back to M&S.) What a fund raiser that would be.

First and last could be fun (do the limericks have to "church safe"?). The middle is the kind of thread I come here to get away from (Seriously, every other board I've been on has had either a "celebrity crush" or "celebrity you most want to sleep with" thread. Or both in some cases.).

Overall, whether WC rides off into the electronic sunset or is resurrected in some new form (after three days, natch), I think a party is in order, even if it's a virtual one. It's just a matter of what we are celebrating. It could be a wake or it could be the launch party for something new.

I would think a de-covenanting thread would be in order ~ to mark the end of the UCCan's relationship with wondercafe.

I'm in search of the 20,000 registered members via the Members List posted up top here on  the right of the page.

I counted approx. 125 members whose names I'm familiar with since 2006 on the first TEN pages of the list. I know there are others on the following pages ( 428  pages in all)  but I  feel that  many  of the members are in hiding, they are  non participating lurkers if they are genuine people.

I doubt very much that they will suddenly all come out to dance.  I also feel that there has been a lot of spamming going on if you take time to read  the list i.e. similiar  people playing games with us, no profiles given etc.  Nobody cares to discuss  my curiosity about this list. I know the last page members have been expelled because it says...no permission to access this profile.

Kimmio ~ In the UCCan covenanting services are held to celebrate and recognize new pastoral relationships/ministries.  Sometimes, when those relationships end, de-covenanting services are held to release all parties involved from their previous committments.  A de-covenanting thread would be a place where we could reflect and give thanks for what wondercafe was - remember life changing moments and funny stories - let go of negative feelings.  Bring closure to this place.

There once was a cafe named Wonder

Where we shared our visions of yonder.

Alas, it went bust,

As all good things must,

And the wonder went out of the yonder.sad

I know I've been an inconsistent poster but I would LOVE to meet cafe-ers in real life. Considering I'm in Tennessee there's an almost zero chance of that happening though.

Hopefully the cafe will just keep going.

It would be great to meet you too, Jon. Looks like WC will go in in some form. But it won't be the same.
