Another Great Saint Has Left Us

The death of The Rev. Dr. Howard Brox marks a significant passing in the United Church.

 

Why?

 

Howard Brox was head of the Division of Mission in Canada for many years in the 1980's and is one of the last leaders from the Evangelical United Brethern tradition. Howard Brox was instrumental in the United Church/EUB union.

Beloved husband for over 64 years of Kathleen (nee Bolender) Brox. Much loved father of Dr. Timothy Brox (Wendy) of Fresno, California, Virginia Rogan (Bob) of London and Patricia Brox (Dan Dragic) of Burlington. Cherished grandfather of Victoria (Helio), Sarah (Brad), Timothy Jr. (Bridgette), Christopher, Amanda (Cameron), Jonathan, Ethan and great-grandfather of Rosa, Nicholas and Benjamin. Dear brother of Donald Brox (Dorie) of Elmira. Howard served as a navigator overseas in the RCAF before becoming ordained in a career that spanned over 50 years. Rev. Dr. Brox began his ministry with the Evangelical United Brethren Church then The United Church of Canada. He served the communities of Sebringville, Pembroke, Waterloo and Hamilton. During that time, he was instrumental in the union of the two denominations. For over a decade, Dr. Brox served as the Secretary of the Division of Mission in Canada during which he received an honourary doctorate from the University of Toronto. He later retired from the Halton Presbytery. Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street (one block north of City Hall), Burlington (905-632-3333), on Sunday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Port Nelson United Church, 3132 South Drive (at Rossmore), Burlington, on Monday, August 27, 2012 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church. Private Interment Elmira Union Cemetery. Perhaps a fitting memorial would be to include the EUB symbol on the church crest. Too bad Howard never lived to see it.
