Do not underestimate my potential ability to screw this up.

We literally have a backup plan in case I have problems installing the software on the server. Like most consulant backup plans, it involves throwing money at the problem.

In all seriousness, I have installed similar forum software before. It's not that difficult. The tedious part is setting it all up the way we want it.

It will not be open to all until we're comfortable with it. We still have to discuss transitions and how long before WC1 becomes static that we want WC2 to go live. A lot will depend on how quickly we get done what we need to get done.

We appreciate the support. With some "real" money being spent, this is getting closer to a reality, which is pretty cool.

I note as well that, every now and then, a really good thread pops up that reminds me why this place is important, as a medium for more than pictures of crocodiles wearing hats. It's an honour to be part of the continuation of this place.

Bear with us, we'll get there. If I don't fry the server first.

Well, I'm FTP'ing files and creating the MySQL database. Once the FTP is done I have to CHMOD some folders.

The host provides the hardware and network to run the board software and its database. Saves us having to deal with the nitty gritty of setting up servers, Internet connections, etc. They deal with all of that so we can focus on setting up and running the best damn board on the Internet. (Just don't tell the admin on the other board that I mod for that I said that . She thinks she's the best and I don't want to spoil her fun. ).

Chemgal, yes, a host is a simple way to describe the space that wondercafe will be running on.  Generally, there are virtual servers running on larger systems.  We "rent" a virtual server and it's operating system is patched by the hosting company.  All details will be forthcoming, but, in its simplest term we have a nice solution which we can move off of if we grow, etc

Software installed. Nothing else really accomplished today. I've disabled the forum for now, so you can not register yet.

But, I installed it without blowing anything up. w00t.

Honestly, I can't understand how XenForo can charge $50 for installation. I guess it takes a few minutes, but it's pretty painless, and anyone who can FTP files can do it.

Well done Admins.  Though I wish  no one had mentioned the second coming.  It reminded me of the first time my adolescent kids heard those words and dissolved into helpless giggling fools!.

Kay, We are trying to hold off on taking donations more than our immediate need until such time as the Treasurer is in place.

On the other hand, a few folks have advised what their pledge range is.

If you are so inclined, you could drop a wondermail to me, Pinga, stating the amount.  We have a spreadsheet showing projected / actual income/expense.

 Should we need to the funds, we have a method that ensures transparency and controls and allows you to send it in prior to the treasurer coming on board.
