As the day winds down, I reflect that the sun set just an hour or so ago on my birthday. The mail has come - hours ago - and suprisingly there were no gifts from subscribers to wondercafe (or anybody else.) It is, I suppose an indication of how secular and self seeking this world has become that followers of wondercafe could have been so neglectful.
But I forgive you and, consistent with the Christian outlook, hold out the possibility of redemption. It is quite amazing what an expensive gift one can get into a small package that would be carried by Canada Post for a trifle. Indeed, a cheque of almost any size could be sent for less than a dollar.
Despair not. Hope springs eternal.

I love how you consider your birthday to be a "Global Issue."
I got this package in the mail the other day -- I could already be a millionaire! But now I feel sorry for you, so I will send it your way. You may already be a millionaire!

You can have my only-slightly-used REALD 3D-glasses pair.
I got them when I went to see the hit movie "Up."
They're a collectors item.
Or at least they will be.
Someday.

Well Aquatarius made a try. But it's hard to think of a use for 3D glasses when there are no 3D movies to look at.

Hey Graeme, I just had my birthday, and one of the nice things tucked in a card for me was a ticket with a code on it so I can enter a contest and win $50000 from Home Depot. I could send you that.
Happy happy birthday

Graeme - would you like my birthday letter from Greenvillage entitling me to $10 off my next purchase of $30 or more of garden plants?
Seriously, I've marked your birthday on my 2010 calendar so I'll be first to acknowledge it (virtually) that day. Happy belated birthday.
ps You've indicated before that you and I are from the same decade. Haven't you noticed that most invitations for celebrations for people our age have a little note: No Gifts Please. We're supposed to have accumulated enough to last us out. How about I make a donation to the food bank and send them my $10 off letter?

I don't know how I missed this momentous event. Where was the front page story on the Globe and Mail? The lead story on the National? What is this world coming to when important historical events are lost and forgotten? A sad commentary on where this world is going. I am appalled.
Since no gift could ever be adequate compensation for such an oversight, I will take the next year to come up with something suitable for such an ostentatious day....
LB - what were we talking about again

Now Graeme- you send me my birthday present, you know the one you FORGOT, and then I'll think of sending you one. I mean, geez, did you even bother with a card??
I'm picturing you sitting in your room, with little tape squares outlining the spots on your floor where you think all the presents will sit. And I bet you have imagined that some are in blue shiny paper with big yellow bows, and some are flatter, elegant green with red ribbons, and some might even be wrapped in gold glittery cellophane... There is even a card that says, "Many Happy Returns, old chum! Do stop by when next in London! love, Lilibet"

Graeme.....I went to buy you a lovely bottle of scotch in MKE, but...as it was a liquid couldn't bring it through the gate....then I thought of a coffee..and actually bought it from Alterra..which makes great coffee...but it was getting cold..so i drank it..
Today I may consider buying you an ice cream cone.

I can only imagine your frustration at the nation, nay, the planet, ignoring this momentous occassion.
In fairness, considering the average efficiency of Canada Post, can you be so certain that gifts are not imminent?

I agree with Kappa this is an outrage that mere monetary gifts can not appease. I think we all should lobby the government of the land to make August 27 a national holiday - what greater gift could we give, not just to Graeme, but the nation as a whole.
Every year, across this great land of ours, men, women and children would remember Graeme and thank him for another much needed summer holiday - although now that I think about this perhaps we should lobby for the true Canadian holiday tradition and make it the first Monday closest to August 27 and ensure a summer long weekend.
I can see it now, special editions of beer - the Graeme 27 pack. Is there a greater honour in this country, I think not!
LB - off to the petition site
I have had a holiday, and I'd like to take it up professionally.

Happy Birthday Graeme,
I had a b'day on the 26th. I did get a few presents : not enough but, such is life. I once lived in a house, where coincidentally, our birthdays fell on Aug 26, 27, 28 - we fought a lot. We had to break up the band . . .

Hah! Here I am, the shell of a man I was on my birthday (August 27), just returned from five days in the cardiac ward.
and what do I find waiting for me? Gifts? No. Not even cheap ones.
Can you imagine how expensive you gifts will have to be now to begin to make up?

graeme
Posted on: 09/04/2009 22:21
There is nothing that is only marginally better than hospital food. Today's lunch was grilled cheese sandwich. By none of the five sense could I identify anything on the plate that resembled either bread or cheese.
