BC Election 2009

I feel as though the body and soul of this wonderful province of BC is at stake. Property held for the common good is being increasingly taken over by private business interests (rivers, forests, wilderness...) with all of the environmental devastation that follows (oil and gas exploration and development, so-called "run of the river" projects that really are not, lakes being turned into tailings ponds, former tree farm licenses being sold for nothing to corporations that are then sub-divided and sold for big money, encroachment into our agricultural land, open-pen fish farms that are leading to the death of the wild salmon...). And, the way that people on the margins are treated is appalling! I just can't fathom another 8 years of a Gordon Campbell government...

The leaders' debate was held this evening and Carole James clearly was the victor. Even right-wing columnists such as Keith Baldry and Vaughan Palmer had to, albeit reluctantly, admit she won. I plead...let's remember to look after each other when making our X at the poll on May 12th. Every vote counts and it's time, long past time, to stop the degradation in our health care system, the cruel treatment of our seniors, the destruction of our public education system, the exponentially increasing expenses in post-secondary costs and to remember that corporations, in spite of the rhetoric, do not give one hoot about the people of our province.

No party is perfect but I'm voting for and hoping others will vote for, the one whose platform and policies focusses on people rather than profits (as the credit union motto goes). As far as GC and his gang go, I say NO MORE  YEARS! Carole will be a marvelous premier, especially in these times of economic distress for many.

I live in a solidly right-wing part of BC. I anticipate that our Liberal candidate will be the next MLA of this area. Having said that, I am encouraged by the number of NDP signs here, and signs for an independent candidate. I think that if the Liberals do not get in here, our independent candidate will. He is a well respected member of this community and would represent us well in Victoria.

I only heard a little of the debate today since I totally forgot it was on. Alas. I am glad to hear that the early polls show that Campbell at least has a fight on his hands this time. He is not likely to get a landslide......here's hoping he is out, or at the very least has a much smaller group in with him and more opposition!

You raise a good point -- a vote for BC-STV  (click for more information) would ensure that people who are in situations such as yours would have the chance to have their vote count in the Legislature.

I totally agree. I hope the BC-STV does improve things. This is a funny area. It is extremely right wing on one level, and there is also a large NDP or more "liberal" (for lack of a better word right now) thinkers. There are many people who are concerned about the bigger picture. Site C is a big issue here for example, and there are many events to raise awareness about this.

I also live in a pretty solidly conservative riding with a fairly popular cabinet minister. However, I will be voting NDP in this one, don't think I've ever voted for the Liberals. I agree with much of what you said in your opening post. Also, I appalled by the general arrogance of the Liberal party. That John van Dongen didn't get it that he needed to resign when he got the second speeding ticket, much less after he lost his license... leaves me speechless.  I do like Carole James. Hope she wins and hope she manages the economy well and proves the critics wrong. Also planning on voting yes to STV.

I'm actually a fan of FPTP.  STV will do a lot to undermine the regional representation that's so important to a province as diverse as BC.

On that note, you guys have a hellova province.  I was in Vancouver last week for the Liberal Convention and was it nice, other than the weather and the worryingly high number of druggies.  In BC, everyone's a bit loopy in a very endearing way.

The provincial B.C. Liberals shouldn't be allowed to call themselves "Liberals", since they are really Conservatives.  It must be confusing for people who have just moved here from elsewhere, and don't remember when Bill Vanderzam created a scandal for the Social Credit party, and next thing we knew all the So- Creds had changed their name to Liberal (since no one else was using the name).   My dad told me that the So-Creds used to actually be Conservatives, and changed their name to  So-Creds in the 1950's after another scandal.

I think the NDP would get in if the Green Party wasn't splitting the vote.  Have you heard about the racist ad that Bill Bennett (East Kootenays) is using?  Is this guy related to the other Bill Bennett and his dad, old Wacky Bennett?   I can remember when old Wacky Bennett was premier, back in the sixties. He used to rant about "the Socialist Hordes" (NDP)  being at the gate.      And I remember when they opened Simon Fraser University, and named all the buildings and roads after old so-cred cabinet ministers.  There is the W.A.C. Bennett Library, and the Gordon Shrum building  (I've heard it said that Shrum was a wife beater).  And of course Gaglardi Way leading up to the university, named after flying Phil Gaglardi--a crook if ever there was one--also given to speeding on the highways.   (The more things change the more they stay the same.)

I'll vote for the "socialist hordes", as always.
