Heh folks
I am curious if anyone knows the rules re Canada Day.
I discovered earlier this week that our plant is closed down on Friday, July 3rd, not Wed, July 1st. Surprised me, but, then I figured, ok, maybe the rules changed.
When dialoguing with friends today, they were adamant that canada day was a mandatory closure day, unless you fit into one of the exceptions like hospitals, services, etc. Now, our plant would not normally be considered anything like that...we definitely close at Christmas, NewYears, etc...
so, what's the buzz...have the rules changed?
ps...we are in Ontario if that makes a difference.

It happens. PEople choose to have a long weekend instead of breaking up the week. I may be wrong but I think that as long as one gets a day in lieu then the Statutory aspect of the holiday has been followed. A friend of mine has a (non-emergent) medical appointment today because the ofice is taking Friday in lieu.

We take the actual holiday. I work a 4 day week, and most of us are burning a vacation day for Thursday off, making a 5 day weekend.
Dominion Day should be on July the First. I never move my birthdays although I have tried to forget a few.

The rules have not changed however many people would prefer to have a long weekend rather than a day in the middle of the week and many privately owned company employers are accomodating. In my company each person was able to take any day they wished and some people took yesterday, others are taking Friday and a couple on Monday. Everyone was entitled to yesterday off...cms

I know of a few people around here who had to work on Canada Day and will get Friday off instead -- and none of them were in the "emergency" or "mandatory" category of things. (And these people are in MB, so it's not just an ON thing.)

I sent an email to Employment Standards. They have suggested I call them for clarification.
I think they are supposed to ask us in writing what we prefer.
