Recently, the Ottawa government announced a large donation (loan to be taxed back from all Canadians to go for civic improvement in Moncton.
By coincidence, at the same time the New Brunswick government offered a large donation (loan to be taxed back from NBers) bringing the total to 50,000,000.
In another amazing coincidence the city of Moncton voted another 30,000,000 to bring it to a total of 80,000,000.
Then, in about the time it takes me to write this post, the Moncton council conducted a thorough study of what Moncton needs most of all, and carried out extensive discussion. Then it announced the major issue facing Moncton. It needs a new hockey stadium that would cost exactly 80 million.
Coincidence after coincidence.
Oh. I didn't mention. Moncton (pop. about 130,000) already has an excellent hockey stadium/showplace. It seats 7,000. The new one will seat 20,000. For comparison, the Montreal Canadiens with a potential audience of 3,000,000, have a seating capacity of just over 21,000.
Oh, did I mention that the owner of the hockey team is Robert Irving, one of the family that owns most of New Brunswick? He has given full support to the project as Moncton's most urgent civic priority.
Anyway, the building of the stadium will certainly be hailed by editorials in all the New Brunwick English dailies. The Irvings own all of them, too.
Enjoy paying for it over the next generation or so. And tighten your belts a little more by cutting down all this wild government spending on poor people and foreigners.
